Five Stars and Divination

When the star of filling meets the planet of Tai Bai, it is considered a conflict.

The Shi school says: When the planet Tai Bai (the planet of metal) approaches the planet Tian Xing (the planet of earth), it indicates destruction and disaster, with poor harvests of grain, leading to famine and death. The Wen Yao Gou says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai meet, there will be mourning events with people wearing white clothes. The Chun Qiu Wei says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai meet, there will be floods. The Shi school says: When the planet Di Hou (another name for Tian Xing) meets Tai Bai, the country corresponding to the constellation where they meet will lose its territory. The Jing Zhou Zhan says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai meet, if Tai Bai is to the south of Tian Xing, this is called "Pine and Male," and the harvest of grain will be good; if Tai Bai is to the north of Tian Xing, this year there will be some areas suffering from hunger. It also says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai meet in the same constellation, with Tai Bai above and Tian Xing below, this is called "parallel light," indicating chaos and disorder. Within three years, there will be warfare and the people will be displaced.

It is also said that when the planet Filling Star joins with the planet Tai Bai, and the Filling Star is north of the Tai Bai, with a distance of seven inches, this is called "mother and child shining together," indicating that people uphold righteousness, are humble and yielding, and have a good harvest, with abundant grain. The ruler will live a long life. It is also said that when the Filling Star and Tai Bai join and mutually guard each other, there will be military conflicts, famine, and widespread disease, and within three years, there will be wandering people. The Shi school says: when the Filling Star and Tai Bai enter the Encampment Mansion together, the whole country will have plots for military action. Xi Meng says: when the Filling Star and Tai Bai join and fight, their light touches each other, indicating mutual rebellion. The Gan school says: when Tai Bai and Filling Star join, there will be disease and internal military disturbances.

The original commentary states: According to the "Celestial Officials" section of the "Book of Song," in the first year of Guangxi of Emperor Huai of Jin, on theGuiwei day of the twelfth lunar month, the bright star invaded the planet of filling; afterwards, the Prince of Hejian was killed by the Prince of Donghai, Sima Yue. In the next year, the first lunar month, the Prince of Donghai, Sima Yue, executed Dugejiu and others; in the fifth lunar month, Jisang and Fengsong killed the Prince of Dongyan; in the eighth lunar month, Gouxi defeated Jisang (the name here is damaged, only a symbol remains). In the twelfth year of Yonghe of Emperor Mu of Jin, on theDingmao day of the seventh lunar month, the bright star invaded the planet of filling, located at the seventh degree of the Willow Mansion; in this same eighth lunar month, Huan Wen defeated Yao Xiang at the Yi River, pacifying the area of the former Zhou dynasty's capital.

The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When the star Tai Bai meets the star Tian Xing, if Tian Xing appears green, it indicates many relatives will die, and there will be military conflicts; if Tian Xing appears yellow, it indicates a drought. It also says: When Tai Bai is one chi north of Tian Xing, it indicates the female ruler cannot hold power; when Tai Bai is one chi south of Tian Xing, it indicates the death of the female ruler. It also says: When Tai Bai circles around Tian Xing, it indicates the need to prepare for military defense and definitely to reinforce earthworks and fortifications. Jiao Yanshou says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai appear together, it indicates the country will gain territory. Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai are very close, and remain together for dozens of days, it indicates someone is conspiring with the empress dowager. Wen Yao Gou says: When the king is capricious and indulgent, Tai Bai will offend Tian Xing. Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Tian Xing offends Tai Bai, it indicates the death of aquatic plants and trees. Wen Yao Gou says: When Tai Bai offends Tian Xing, it indicates a large-scale military campaign, with mutual destruction. Wu Xian says: When Tai Bai and Tian Xing fight, the period of the event is ninety days, the ruler of that region will have worries, the king will lose territory, or there will be military conflicts and funerals, and a new prince or minister will be established. Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Tian Xing and Tai Bai meet and fight, it indicates ministers plotting against the king, military conflicts will arise, and the country will lose territory.

The star Filling Star (填星) and the star Morning Star (辰星) are in conflict.

The Zhongjiao Divination says: The planet Tianming (Fill Star) conflicting with the planet Chenxing (Morning Star) indicates that there will be a rainbow in winter and thunder in winter, cold in summer, hail and frost falling. The Gan school says: Water conflicting with earth indicates cold in summer and snowfall, which harms the female ruler. The Zhongjiao Divination also says: The planet Chenxing conflicting with the planet Tianming indicates many cold frosts in summer and continuous rain in autumn, the female ruler being exiled; another interpretation is that the female ruler has worries. The Shi school says: The planet Tianming (Fill Star), representing the earth, and the planet Chenxing (Morning Star), representing the rabbit, meeting in the east, with the Chenxing appearing white and large in size, indicates military conflicts occurring outside the country, requiring the offering of land to seek peace.

The "Transmission of the Five Phases" states: In the seventh year of the later period of Emperor Wen of Han, in the eleventh month on the Wuxu day, the planet of filling and the planet of the morning star met at the mansion of the rooftop. This is the territory corresponding to the state of Qi. The divination text says: This is called "obstructing and blocking." If it coincides with water vapor, the area it indicates will be flooded. The country should not initiate any actions; if it goes to war, it will surely suffer calamity, and there will be a complete defeat. Three years later, the king of Qi raised an army to support Wu and Chu. Wu and Chu's armies were defeated, and the king of Qi committed suicide, which was the fulfillment of this prophecy. The "Book of Celestial Officials" says: When the planet of filling and the planet of water meet, it is called "obstructing and blocking," which indicates a complete defeat. If it occurs in the country, it will lose territory; if it enters the country, it will gain territory. The original commentary says: This refers to the mansion it leaves and the mansion it enters. It also says: When earth and water meet, there will be a change in plans and a change in the affairs to be carried out.

The Wen Yao Gou says: When the star of exemption (Chen star) and the filling star meet, it indicates internal disorder and famine, and one should not engage in warfare. The Shi school says: When the star of exemption (also written as the star of浼) and the filling star meet, it is called obstruction and stagnation, and the country that corresponds to this should not undertake any actions, and warfare will certainly bring calamity. The Gan school says: When the star of exemption and the filling star meet, it indicates defeat of the army and death of generals. The Hai Zhong Zhan says: When the Chen star and the filling star meet, and their position is in the mansion of Emptiness, it indicates a great flood in autumn. The original book's note says: According to Tan Daoluan's Jin Yang Chou, in the fifth year of Emperor Xiaowu of Jin's Taoyuan era, seventh month, on the Bingzi day, the Chen star invaded the filling star; in the winter of the same year, in the tenth month, there was flooding in Danyang, Pingling, and Yixing areas; in the sixth month of the next year, there was a great flood along the Yangtze River in Yangzhou and Jingzhou. Xi Meng says: When the Chen star and the filling star meet, it indicates someone plotting secretly. It also says: When the Chen star and the filling star meet in the mansion of Emptiness, it indicates an earthquake in the state of Qi.

The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When the planet Chen Xing appears and meets the planet Tian Xing, the ruler's decrees will not be implemented. The Shi school says: When Chen Xing and Tian Xing meet, there will be earth and wood construction projects and agricultural labor, which are not in accordance with the law, caused by corrupt ministers. If these ministers are executed, it will be auspicious. Xi Meng says: When Tian Xing is in a certain position and Chen Xing follows it, it is unfavorable for military campaigns. Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Chen Xing is in a certain position and Tian Xing follows it, it is favorable for military campaigns and can lead to military achievements. It also says: When Tian Xing and Chen Xing are divided into male and female, and they enter the same constellation together, the country corresponding to that constellation will gain territory; if they leave the same constellation together, the country corresponding to that constellation will lose territory. The Yellow Emperor's divination says: When Tian Xing and Chen Xing fight in the east, it indicates that a minister will replace the ruler; when they fight in the west, it indicates a period of ninety days, and there will be disturbances in the palace of a powerful country. Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Tian Xing and Chen Xing meet and fight, if there are armies outside the country, there will certainly be battles; if there are no armies, it indicates internal disorder. It also says: When Tian Xing and Chen Xing meet and fight, the country corresponding to the constellation where they meet will have military affairs, with water and earth following each other, and the pass and bridge will be blocked, leading to disorder in that country.

The star Tai Bai (bright star) and the star Chen Xing (Morning Star) are in conflict three times.

The Shi school says: When the star Tai Bai (the planet Venus) is in the west and interferes with Chen Xing (the planet Mercury), it indicates that someone will have troubles; if Tai Bai is in the east and interferes with Chen Xing, it indicates that there will be calamity in the area of the great emptiness, affecting common people. The Gan school says: When Chen Xing interferes with Tai Bai, it indicates that fish will be unable to reproduce. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Tai Bai appears in the east, and Chen Xing appears below it, it means Chen Xing is to the east of Tai Bai; when Tai Bai appears in the west, and Chen Xing appears behind it, it means Chen Xing is to the west of Tai Bai; Tai Bai and Chen Xing are distinguished by which appears first. It also says: When Tai Bai appears in the east and Chen Xing also appears in the east, if Tai Bai comes out first and Chen Xing comes out later, and Chen Xing passes over Tai Bai from above, it indicates that a minister will betray his sovereign, and this will not be verified in the same year. It also says: When Tai Bai and Chen Xing appear on the same day in the east, there will be military affairs in the east; if they appear on the same day in the west, there will be military affairs in the west.

The Tian Gao Shu says: If the planet Chén Xīng does not appear, then the planet Tai Bai will act as the distant guest; if Chén Xīng appears, then Tai Bai will act as the defending host. The Jingzhou Zhàn says: When Tai Bai and Chén Xīng alternate in their appearances, one can determine who is the host and who is the guest: if Tai Bai appears and Chén Xīng does not, then Tai Bai is the guest; if Chén Xīng appears and Tai Bai does not, then Chén Xīng is the guest; if neither the planet of metal nor the planet of water appear, then the planet of fire will be considered the guest. If there is only a guest and no host, even though there are armies, the strength of the army will not lead to battle. The Huang Di Bing Fa says: If Tai Bai and Chén Xīng both appear in the east, the western country will suffer a great defeat; if they both appear in the west, the eastern country will suffer a great defeat. If both the guest and the host are clearly defined, and the army is in the east, the eastern army will be defeated; if the army is in the west, the western army will be defeated—this refers to exposed armies. Those in exposed positions, if not skilled in warfare, will gain nothing, and their own army should remain in defense without engaging.

The Shi school says: When the planet Chen Xing and Tai Bai appear together in the east, both red with a halo, it indicates a great defeat for the countries by the sea, and a great victory for the Central Plains. If they appear together in the west, both red with a halo, it indicates a great defeat for the Central Plains and a great victory for the countries by the sea. The original commentary says: the countries by the sea refer to the夷狄. Another view is that if both stars appear black, the country associated with water will benefit. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Tai Bai and Chen Xing appear together in the east or together in the west, it indicates that the host and the guest meet, and if there are armies, there will certainly be a battle; even without armies, there will be military action. It also says: if Tai Bai appears and Chen Xing moves to the right ahead of Tai Bai, the defending side gains a small advantage, while the attacking side gains a great advantage. If Tai Bai appears and Chen Xing moves to the left ahead of Tai Bai, the distant guest gains a small advantage, while the attacking guest gains a great advantage. If both stars remain stationary, even if there are military matters, they will cease.

It is also said that when the star Tai Bai appears north of the star Chen Xing, a distant army will be advantageous; when Chen Xing appears north of Tai Bai, the defending general will have great advantage. If both stars appear together in the east, it is favorable for waging war to the west; if they appear together in the west, it is favorable for waging war to the east. It is also said that when Tai Bai appears and Chen Xing is behind it, an army should be mobilized within twenty days; if Chen Xing is ahead of Tai Bai, the army should disband within fifteen days; if Chen Xing is to the right of Tai Bai, with a distance of three feet, there will certainly be a battle, and the commander of the guest army will die; if Chen Xing is to the left of Tai Bai, the defending army will suffer losses, and one military officer will die. It is also said that when Chen Xing is ahead of Tai Bai, the army should disband; when Chen Xing is behind Tai Bai, the army should be mobilized; when Chen Xing is on the southern side (the yang side), it is favorable for the guest army; when Chen Xing is on the northern side (the yin side), it is favorable for the defending army. The Shi school says that when Chen Xing appears thirteen days before Tai Bai, the army will disband; when Chen Xing appears after Tai Bai, the army should be mobilized.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the star Tai Bai meets the star Chen Xing, if Tai Bai yields to Chen Xing, it indicates that the ruler of the territory fears the distant guest; it also indicates that there will be military conflicts throughout the realm. If Tai Bai is in the east and Chen Xing is ahead of it without departing, and after fifteen or twenty days it disappears, it indicates that the forces of the Yin side are destroyed; if it does not disappear, there will be a great battle; if Chen Xing departs, then the war will cease. It also says that there will be military conflicts throughout the realm. If Chen Xing is in the west and is ahead of Tai Bai, and after fifteen or twenty days it disappears, it indicates that the forces of the Yang side are destroyed and the guest army retreats. It also says: When there is no military conflict in the realm, Chen Xing and Tai Bai appear together in the west, with Chen Xing ahead of Tai Bai, and the two stars are very close, with a gap that can fit a sword. The original commentary cites Su Lin saying: "Hán" is read as "Hán", meaning to contain, indicating that the space between the two stars can fit a sword. If the two stars are located to the north of the You position, the territory of the Yin side has military plans; if they are located to the south of the You position, the territory of the Yang side has military plans; if the two stars are not close, it indicates that there will be executions among the military officials.

Xi Meng said: Tai Bai and Chen Xing in the north of You position indicate affairs of the northern country; in the south of You position, affairs of the southern country; directly at You position, affairs of the central country; directly at Mao position, affairs of the Yang Fang country. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: when there is an army, Tai Bai and Chen Xing appear in the same direction, facing the same way but residing in different star mansions, indicating that both sides will come to meet; although the enemy is close, the battle has not yet begun; when the two stars follow each other in the mansions and no longer meet, both sides will cease hostilities. It also says: when there is an army, Tai Bai appears in the east while Chen Xing appears in the west, or Tai Bai appears in the west while Chen Xing appears in the east, then although there are troops on the battlefield, there will be no battle. The Shi school says: when Chen Xing appears but does not follow Tai Bai, even if there is an army, there will be no battle.

The book "Sea Divination" says: When the water star and the bright star meet in the east, the whole country will start large-scale military campaigns. Although the military strength is strong, there will be no actual fighting, and both sides will exchange territories to seek benefits. The Gan school says: When the water star and the bright star meet, it indicates a change in plans and worries about military affairs. The original book's marginal notes cite Ban Gu's "Book of Han · Astronomical Records" which says: In the first month of the first year of Emperor Jing of the Han Dynasty, on theGuiyou day, the bright star and the water star met in the Girl mansion; by the third year of Emperor Jing, the seven states of Wu, Chu, Jiao Xi, Jiao Dong, Zi Chuan, Jiao Nian, and Zhao rebelled, and their armies failed and scattered. It also cites the "Book of Song · Astronomical Records" which says: In the fourth month of the third year of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song Dynasty, the bright star and the water star met in the west; at that time, Prince Jingling plotted a rebellion, and the court sent the Yu Lin army to attack, which was the fulfillment of this prediction.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the bright star and the morning star are two feet or one foot apart, it indicates the vanguard star and the expenditure star will kill the general; if the morning star approaches the bright star from in front, it signifies a serious illness; if it approaches from the side, it indicates a minor illness; if they approach each other closely, then whoever initiates the military action will suffer misfortune. It also says: If the bright star and the morning star are three or four feet apart in the east but not close, and the morning star does not set for twenty days up to thirty days, it indicates military affairs in the southeast, but there will be no actual battle; the fulfillment of the prediction will occur in spring or summer, when the military conflict will arise. It also says: If the bright star and the morning star are far apart in the west but not close, and the morning star does not set for twenty days up to thirty days, it indicates military affairs in the north.

Another divination passage states: When the planet of water (Chen Xing) and the planet of metal (Tai Bai) are close to each other in the western sky, with a distance of three or four chi (one chi is approximately one degree), warfare will occur within twenty to thirty days. If the two stars are far apart, there will be no warfare. Xi Meng says: When the planet of water follows the planet of metal in the west, war will break out even in a time of peace, and this will happen within six months. If there is already warfare, the invading army will gain advantage. When the two stars are about four chi apart, the strength of the invading army increases. The farther apart the two stars are, the less likely warfare will occur. When the war is not yet over, if the planet of water retreats, the warfare will cease. Xi Meng also says: When the planet of metal and the planet of water are in conjunction, there will be warfare at the borders. (Note from the original text: According to司马彪's "Continued Book of Han: Astronomical Records," in the first year of Yuan Xing of Emperor Shangdi of the Han dynasty, on the leap month of July, on the day of Xinhai, the planets of water and metal appeared in the same constellation. That year, the Mo people of Liao Dong rebelled, plundering six counties. The court mobilized troops from the four commanderies of Shanggu, Yuyang, Youbeiping, and Liaoxi, known as the "Ma Huan" (which is actually the Huo Hu).)

The Shi school says: When the planet Tai Bai and the star Chen Xing gather in the same mansion, there will be a minor drought throughout the land; the country corresponding to this mansion will certainly be able to win the allegiance of the world through its great virtue. If these two stars remain in this mansion for thirty days without departing, then all grass and trees will be harmed, and the five grains will be completely ruined. Chen Zhuo says: When Tai Bai and Chen Xing share the same mansion of Ji, the person in power will be punished for this. The "Hong Fan Zhuan" says: When the planet Jin Xing and the star Shui Xing meet in the mansion of Wu Nu (which is the same as Nu), there will be plots of turmoil, which is a worry of military disaster. The "Ershiba Xu Shan Jing Zhu" says: When Tai Bai and Chen Xing both stay in the mansion of Mao, within a hundred days, the king of Zhao will be imprisoned, and the ministers will fight each other. This is because the territory corresponding to the mansion of Mao is Zhao, so the prophecy will be fulfilled in Zhao.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the star Tai Bai and the star Chen Xing meet, Tai Bai represents the host side that is defending, and Chen Xing represents the guest army that is attacking, so there will be warfare, and the guest army will win. If Chen Xing circles around Tai Bai, there will be a great battle, and a subordinate general of the host side will die in battle. If Chen Xing confronts "Tai Yue" (which is likely a miswriting of "Tai Bai"), then the main general of the host side will die in battle. It also says: After the appearance of Tai Bai, if Chen Xing quickly follows and approaches closely, with a distance of one foot between them, there will be a great military campaign. If the light of the two stars touches each other, as if they are rubbing against each other, then there will be warfare involving tens of thousands of soldiers in the area corresponding to their positions, with the guest army winning and the host army retreating. It also says: If Chen Xing is in the west following Tai Bai, circling and approaching closely, and Tai Bai is located to the north of the position of You (the western direction), then the country of the Yin side will raise an army. If Tai Bai is located to the south of the position of You, then the country of the Yang side will raise an army. The predicted time is six months, and if the army is already stationed outside, there will be warfare, and the guest army will gain the advantage.

The Shi school says: When the star of the hour (Chen star) approaches the star of the bright warrior (Tai Bai) and remains close for a long time, the general will die. If the star's light resembles a flag, the side from which the flag's light originates will break the enemy's army and kill the enemy's general, and the guest army will win. (The original book's note citing the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" says: If the flag's light does not appear, the guest army will lose territory.) Observing the direction pointed by the flag's light determines which army will be defeated. It also says: When the Chen star rubs against the left side of the Tai Bai star, there will be a great battle, and the officials of the host side will die in battle; if it rubs against the right side of the Tai Bai star, there will be a battle involving tens of thousands, and the host side will win. The "Wen Yao Gou" says: When the Chen star rubs against the Tai Bai star, the chief minister who enters the court will be ruined and destroyed. (Original note: The "Zong Bo" says, "Mo" refers to the two stars' lights touching each other; "qing" means destruction and ruin.) Wu Xian says: When the Tai Bai star and the "Mai star" (i.e., the Chen star) fight, it will not be more than a year before the ministers of the country rebel.

The Records of the Grand Historian: The Book of Celestial Officials says: When the star Tai Bai (Venus) and the star Chen Xing (Saturn) clash, there will certainly be a great battle, with the guest army winning and the officers of the host army dying in battle. The Jingzhou Divination says: When Tai Bai and Chen Xing meet and clash, if there are armies outside the country, there will be a great battle with bloodshed; at the same time, there will also be internal disturbances within the country. The Spring Orbit says: When Chen Xing circles around Tai Bai or clashes with it, there will be a great battle; if Chen Xing passes over Tai Bai, and the space between them is only as narrow as a single sword, there will be a small-scale battle; if Chen Xing emerges from outside Tai Bai, then the right wing of the army will be in danger. If the stars emit a green glow, it indicates military worries; if they emit a black glow, there will be great flooding. The Gan school says: When Chen Xing and Tai Bai meet and clash, there will be a severe drought.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Chén Xīng (Venus) meets and fights with Tàibái (Mars), Chén Xīng cannot win, and the regions of Yān, Zhào, and Dài will suffer calamity. It also says: When Chén Xīng and Tàibái fight, there will be a rebellious minister in the region corresponding to their positions, and the time of the event will not exceed three years. It further says: When Chén Xīng and Tàibái fight, if Tàibái's light disperses, the guest army will win, and the state of Qín will suffer calamity—since Tàibái's region corresponds to Qín. If Chén Xīng's light disperses, the host army will win, and the regions of Yān and Dài will suffer calamity. It also says: When Tàibái circles around Chén Xīng, or when the two stars clash, and they are one chi apart, with only a single sword fitting between them, this indicates the enemy army will be defeated and the enemy general will be killed, and the host army will win.

The Shi school says: When the star of the constellation 'Mian' (another name for the star 'Chen') enters the light of the star 'Tai Bai', and five days later exits; if it enters again and exits from above, it indicates the enemy army will be defeated and their general killed, and the guest army will win; if it exits from below, the guest army will lose land of three hundred li. The 'Jingzhou Divination' says: When the star 'Chen' enters the light of 'Tai Bai' and then exits, there will be the death of a king. It also says: When 'Tai Bai' stays near 'Chen', the king of the corresponding region will die. It also says: When 'Chen' follows 'Tai Bai', and the two stars guard each other, with the space between them only able to fit a single sword, there will be a battle involving tens of thousands of soldiers in the corresponding region.

The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume 23

The Star of Years (Sui Xing) is used for divination.

The name of the star of the year governs one.

The Shi school says: The star of the year (which is Jupiter) is also called "She Ti", "Chong Hua", "Ying Xing", and "Jing Xing". The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" says: The star of the year is also called "Ji Xing", which is also called the star of the year. It is a star that represents the ancestral temples in the heavens. The "Chun Qiu Wei" says: The vital energy of spring and the Eastern Emperor "Ling Wei Yang" deity transforms into the form of the star of the year, belonging to the seven stars of the Azure Dragon in the East. The Shi school says: The star of the year is condensed from the vital energy of wood, located in the East, and is the son of the God of the East. It travels through one "zhi" (one of the twelve divisions of the Yellow Path, such as Xing Ji and Xuan Xiao) each year, and completes a full circle around the sky in twelve years, corresponding one by one with the heavenly official known as the Great Year. Therefore, it is called the "star of the year". It symbolizes the sovereign, governing benevolence, righteousness, and virtue. In terms of officials, it corresponds to the Grand Minister of Agriculture and the deputy prime minister. The states it governs are Wu and Qi, the season it governs is spring, the day stems it corresponds to are Jia and Yi, and the earthly branches are Yin and Mao. The state where the star of the year is located will be prosperous.

The Shi school says: The star of years governs a person's appearance and expression, whether they are angry or happy, and the matters they intend to carry out. The "Hecheng Tu" says: The star of years governs the hidden virtue. The "Hongfan Wuxing Zhuan" says: Among the five constants, the star of years corresponds to benevolence, kindness, virtue, filial piety, and compassion; among the five affairs mentioned in the "Shangshu · Hongfan," it corresponds to appearance, authority, ceremony, demeanor, and movement. If benevolence and virtue are lacking, and appearance is improper, violating the proper policies of spring, the star of years will manifest calamities. (Original book note: According to Ban Gu's "Hanshu · Tianwen Zhi," violating the spring season harms the wood element, and the punishment is manifested through the star of years.) Although the star of years governs virtue and fortune, whenever it encounters evil and rebellious matters, it becomes angry, and the calamities it brings are even more severe.

The *Huainanzi: Astronomical Treatise* says: The East belongs to wood, and grass and trees take root in the soil before they sprout. The deity of the East is Taihao (the original note says: among the five deities of heaven, Taihao governs the East). Assisting him is the official of wood, Goumang, who holds a compass and governs spring (the original note says: compass means circle). In the sky, it corresponds to the planet Jupiter, the corresponding divine beast is the Azure Dragon, the corresponding five tones is the Jue tone, and the corresponding day stems are Jia and Yi. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: Jupiter governs spring, and is the heavenly agricultural official; its deity corresponds to Jupiter, governing the East dimension. It also says: it governs the harvest of the five grains in a year. It also says: Jupiter oversees the examination of the faults of the feudal lords and the sovereign. The *Tianjing* says: Jupiter governs spring, is the son of the苍帝 (Emperor of the Azure), and represents heaven in bestowing virtue and blessings.

The Shi school says: The country corresponding to the position of the star of years (Sui Xing) cannot be attacked, but instead one can use its power to attack others. The Gan school says: When a state is about to receive blessings, the star of years will stay in its corresponding area. The Huainanzi says: Where the star of years resides, the five grains will be abundant; the opposite direction is called "Chong," and that direction will suffer calamity in that year. The Jingzhou Divination says: The country corresponding to the star mansion where the star of years resides will have peace and happiness; the country corresponding to the star mansion where the star of years has left will suffer famine. It also says: The country corresponding to the star mansion where the star of years moves to will have joy, while the country corresponding to the star mansion where the star of years leaves will have military action. It also says: When the star of years moves smoothly and conforms to the usual course, the country corresponding to its position cannot be attacked, but one can use its power to attack an unjust state, and the attack will surely succeed. It also says: The country corresponding to the star mansion where the star of years stays will have matured grains. The Shi school says: The star of years symbolizes the ruler. The Shi Divination says: Since the star of years symbolizes the ruler, its color should be bright and moist.

The movement of the Star of Years (Jupiter) across the sky.

The "Hongfan Wuxing Zhuan" says: In the first year of the Jiazi cycle, which is the eleventh Jiazi, when the winter solstice occurs at the beginning of the lunar month, at the midpoint of the night, the star of years (Su Xing) together with the sun, moon, and five planets starts from five degrees before the Ox mansion, and moves eastward (rightward) in the order of the twenty-eight mansions. It completes a full circle around the sky in twelve years. (Original book note: According to the calendar calculation, after the Su Xing appears once, it disappears after 363 days, and then reappears after 35 days and 1330/1162 of a day plus 45 small fractions. A complete synodic period is 398 days and 1340/1162 of a day plus 45 small fractions. All schools of thought say that it takes twelve years to complete a full circle around the sky, but when compared with this calculation, the twelve-year period is somewhat approximate.) The actual time for the Su Xing to complete a full circle around the sky is slightly shorter than twelve years. Over time, it will advance into the next star position ahead of schedule, which is what is referred to later as "chao chen" (overtaking a star). This is precisely why the integer statement of "twelve years for a full circle" is not precise enough.

The Yellow River Chart and Luo Writing say: The star of years moves one twelfth of a degree each day, completing a full circle around the sky in twelve years; it rises in the east in the morning and sets in the west in the evening. The Gan school says: The star of years completes a full circle in twelve years, and each time it sets in the west in the evening, it will reappear in the east in the morning after thirty days; by observing its movement forward, backward, left, and right, one can predict auspiciousness and ominous signs. The Gan school also says: When the star of years is in a stable and regular position, it is a sign of good fortune. The Records of the Grand Historian, Book of Celestial Officials, says: After the star of years appears, it moves eastward for twelve degrees, stops after one hundred days, then retrogrades eight degrees, and after another hundred days, it resumes moving eastward—this forward and backward movement is the normal pattern of planetary stationary and retrograde motion.

Wu Xian said: When the star of years is restrained and moves in harmony, the sovereign should implement gentle and benevolent policies: appoint many virtuous officials, grant fiefs to meritorious ministers, distribute wealth, provide relief and loans, prohibit arbitrary opening and closing of borders, clear blocked roads, and refrain from cutting down trees. The "Book of Documents - The Heavenly Mandate" says: The annual seasons are divided into five categories, and when the seasonal divisions are appropriate for the spring category, one should inspect agriculture and sericulture, prohibit cutting down trees, to stabilize the state; by doing so, the star of years will move in its regular course, and the five grains will flourish accordingly. If the policies of spring are improper, the star of years will not remain in its usual position. The "Book of Music - The Movement of Sounds" says: When the tone of Jue is harmonious and orderly, the star of years will often correspond with the sovereign star; if the month builder god appears, then "invention" occurs, and one should prepare in advance for military affairs. (Original book note: "Invention" refers to a bird formed from the essence of metal, which symbolizes both the power of metal to overcome wood and the image of military weapons.)

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the star of the year is in its proper place and moves forward and backward in accordance with the usual course, the country under its influence will be blessed, the king will be auspicious, and wicked deeds will be quelled. It also says: When the ruler governs with urgency, the star of the year moves quickly; when he governs with leniency, the star moves slowly; when he is harsh, the star travels along the northern path of the Yellow Path; when he is kind, it travels along the southern path; and when he is balanced, it travels along the central path. Traveling along the southern path brings drought, traveling along the northern path brings floods, and traveling along the central path signifies harmony between yin and yang. It also says: When the star of the year moves straight, it indicates the ruler's mind is upright; when it moves crookedly, it indicates the ruler's mind is not upright. By "moving straight" it means following the Yellow Path; by "moving crookedly" it means deviating from the Yellow Path. It also says: When the ruler's governance is overly lenient, the star of the year travels along the southern path, resulting in frequent droughts. At this time, the ruler's thoughts are outward, his worries fall upon the ministers of the border regions, and he will reward and favor those without merit.

The Gan school says: wherever the year star is located, that region should not be attacked. Suppose the year star is in the寅 position, then in that year, it is not advisable to wage war in the Northeast, but favorable to attack in the Southwest. The Southwest will have poor harvests and people's troubles, because that is the 'conflict' position of the year star, which often brings misfortune. This applies for twelve years in succession. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: the year star travels through one "zhi" each year, successively residing in the twenty-eight constellations, corresponding to the cycle of the sovereign star. In twelve years, the year star completes a full circle around the sky. When the Wealth star (i.e., the sovereign star) is in the four cardinal directions (丑寅, 辰巳, 未申, 戌亥), the year star resides in the two constellations under the cardinal direction's jurisdiction. When the Wealth star is in the four intermediate directions (子午卯酉), the year star resides in the three constellations under the intermediate direction's jurisdiction.

The *Huainanzi·Tianwen Xun* says: When the Taiyin is in the four central positions, the star of the year stays for three constellations. (Original note: Taiyin refers to the master star; the four central positions refer to Zi, Wu, Mao, and You. If the star of the year is in Mao, it stays in Xun, Xu, and Wei, hence three constellations.) When the Taiyin is in the four hooks, the star of the year stays for two constellations. (Original note: The four hooks refer to Chou and Yin as one hook, Chen and Si as one hook, Wei and Shen as one hook, and Xu and Hai as one hook. If the star of the year is in Yin, it stays in Dou and Niu, hence two constellations. Also, according to "Evil Burn" — which is likely Jin Zhuo — it says: When Taiyin is in the four firsts and the four ends, the star of the year stays for two constellations.) Two multiplied by eight gives sixteen, three multiplied by four gives twelve, together making twenty-eight. Therefore, twelve years are sufficient for the star of the year to traverse all twenty-eight constellations. The star of the year moves one twelfth of a degree each day, and thirty and seven twelfths degrees each year, completing a full circle around the sky in twelve years.

The Spring and Autumn Writings state: When the Wealth star and Mother star are in the亥 position, the Year Star is in the角 and 亢 positions; when they are in the子 position, the Year Star is in the氐, 房, and 心 positions; when they are in the丑 position, the Year Star is in the尾 and 箕 positions; when they are in the寅 position, the Year Star is in the斗 and 牵牛 positions; when they are in the卯 position, the Year Star is in the须女, 虚, and 危 positions; when they are in the巳 position (the original text says '已'), the Year Star is in the营室 and 东壁 positions—this should follow the order of the辰 position; when they are in the辰 position, the Year Star is in the营室 and 东壁 positions; when they are in the巳 position, the Year Star is in the奎 and 娄 positions; when they are in the午 position, the Year Star is in the胃, 昴, and 毕 positions; when they are in the未 position, the Year Star is in the觜, 参, and 伐 positions; when they are in the申 position, the Year Star is in theWell mansion and Ghost mansion positions; when they are in the酉 position (the original text says '西'), the Year Star is in the柳, 七星 (the original text says '九星'), and 张 positions; when they are in the戌 position, the Year Star is in the翼 and 轸 positions. This is the regular course of the Year Star's movement.

The Gan school says: When the star of brightness and prestige is located in the territory of a particular state, it governs one of the twelve years' names, namely the year of "She Ti Ge." According to Li Xun, this refers to the emergence of all things through the reception of yang energy, hence the term "She Ti Ge," where "Ge" means rising. Sun Yan explains that yang energy gathers and supports all things, enabling them to grow upward. The year of "She Ti Ge" corresponds to the year of Yin. At this time, the star of brightness and prestige rises in the sign of Chou in the morning, and during the first lunar month, it is together with the Dipper mansion, the Ghost mansion, the Ox mansion, and the Girl mansion. According to the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials," it is with the Dipper and the Ox; the Shi school says it is in the Dipper and the Ox; the "Tai Chu Calendar" says it is in Ying Shi and Dong Bi; the "Huainanzi: Interpretation of the Great Vastness" says that when the sun is in the year of Yin, the year is called "She Ti Ge," and the dominant star is the star of brightness and prestige, which resides in the Dipper and the Ox. Xu Shen notes that in heaven, the dominant star is the star of brightness and prestige, and on earth, it is the wealth star and mother star. The star of brightness and prestige rises in the morning from the east and sets in the west in the evening. The name of the star of brightness and prestige for this year is "Jian De," appearing dark blue and shining with its own light. If the state under its jurisdiction has virtue, millet and foxtail millet will mature; if it lacks virtue, there will be military conflicts and people will be anxious. If the star of brightness and prestige deviates from its proper position, moving earlier or later than it should, there will be heavenly signs appearing in the Ghost mansion. According to the "Celestial Officials Book," such signs appear where the handle of the Dipper points. This year first has floods, then droughts. According to the "Huainanzi: Interpretation of the Great Vastness," the year of "She Ti Ge" first has floods and then droughts, rice has diseases, silkworms have poor harvests, beans and wheat are abundant, and the people each receive four sheng of grain per day.

The Gan school says: In the year of Dan'han, according to Li Xun's explanation, the sovereign star is in the position of卯, which refers to the movement of yang qi propelling all things into activity, hence it is called 'Dan'han'. 'Dan' means completion, and 'han' means stop. Sun Yan explains that 'Dan' was originally written as 'Tan', meaning 'Tan is the middle'. The qi that was previously restrained is now fully extended. The year's yin refers to the position of卯 (the original text says 'Sheshige is in卯', Sheshige is the name for the year of寅, but here it generally refers to the position of the year's yin). The star of years is in the position of子, and is located with Xu and Wei. According to the 'Tian Gao Book', it is with Wu Nu, Xu, and Wei; according to the 'Han Shu · Tian Wen Zhi', it is fixed in Gui and Lou according to the Tai Chu calendar.
