The Ten Divination Lines of the Chain of Stars
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
The Shi school says: The cluster of stars called Guansuo consists of nine stars. The original commentary notes that the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" says: "The hook and circle consist of fifteen stars, belonging to the handle of the Big Dipper, called 'the prison of thieves.' According to this, Guansuo as the prison of thieves consists of only nine stars. Why did Sima Qian mention fifteen stars placed before the Seven Officials? Its meaning is unclear. The star to the upper right is located half a degree in the Tail mansion, and is about fifty-nine degrees from the North Pole. It is thirty-seven degrees within the Yellow Path." Guansuo is located before the Seven Officials. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: The Heavenly Prison is the prison for criminals, symbolizing the laws and punishments of the world. It is also called "Continuous Rope," "Heavenly Reception," and "Heavenly Encirclement." The "Treatise on Omen" says: Guansuo governs the Heavenly Prison. Xi Meng says: Guansuo is the legal system for arresting and imprisoning criminals; the Heavenly Prison also governs the illness and worries of the Son of Heaven. The "Spring Annals' Brocade" says: Guansuo is the prison for thieves. When the stars within the circle are dense, there are many prisoners; when they are sparse, prisoners are released from prison.
The Shi school says: The chain of stars called Guansuo has a gap on its northern side, named "Lao Hu." If the space between the stars is wide, it indicates that Lao Hu is open, and there will certainly be an amnesty. If the distance between the stars is narrow and not open, there will be worries within the prison, which will affect the Nobleman. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: One should observe the Heavenly Prison according to the seasons. If the stars at the mouth of the prison spread apart on both sides, there will be a great amnesty throughout the country. If there is no amnesty, there will be rebellion, the ruler will be anxious, and business activities will not proceed smoothly.
The Huangdi Zhan says: The main star in the center of the Heavenly Prison is the prison supervisor. If this star moves about, does not stay in its place, or disappears, there will be a great amnesty, lasting eighteen days. Within the Heavenly Prison, there are usually three 'attached stars.' These should be observed in the evening on the days of Jiazi, Bingzi, Wuzi, Gengzi, and Renzi. If one of the stars moves away, there will be good fortune. If two stars move away, there will be an imperial decree granting titles and salaries. If all three stars move away, the ruler will practice virtue and issue a general amnesty. If observed on the day of Jiazi, the amnesty will last eighty-one days; on Bingzi, seventy-two days; on Wuzi, sixty days; on Gengzi, eighty days; and on Renzi, sixty-two days, after which the amnesty decree will be issued.
The Huangdi Zhan says: The stars within the Heavenly Prison should not be numerous; if there are many stars, there will be many prisoners; if the stars are sparse, there will be few prisoners; if there are no stars at all, there will be no criminals in the world and the country will be peaceful. If a line of stars connects continuously and points directly to the Weaving Maid, there will be urgent military requisitions for silk and cloth. The Shi school says: The chain of stars encroaching upon the Milky Way indicates that the ruler will be eaten by others and military conflicts will arise. The direction in which the opening of the Heavenly Prison faces indicates the direction of the military attack, with a duration of six months. Jiao Yanshou says: When the prison of the chain of stars is open, and the stars on either side enter the prison, it indicates that a nobleman will be trapped in a dilemma, the guards will not return, and there will certainly be calamity, military disaster, and death.
Xi Meng said: The stars of the Heavenly Prison are arranged upright and straight; if they also emit sharp rays, it indicates an imperial pardon, and one should observe during the hours of Wu and Wei. There is a star near the Heavenly Prison that controls the opening and closing of the prison gate: when the Heavenly Prison is opened, there will be a great pardon; when this star closes, the pardon is appropriate; if this star is already open but no pardon is issued, it shows negligence. If one follows the will of heaven and the Heavenly Prison is empty of stars, a new era should be established; if virtue is not practiced, heaven will send a rain of sand and stone, lasting for three years. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Book of Celestial Officials" says: when the ruler practices virtue and issues pardons, the Heavenly Prison will become empty. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: if there are many stars in the Heavenly Prison, there will be many prisoners; nine stars indicate numerous legal cases; eight stars indicate that wicked people are imprisoned; seven stars indicate a minor pardon; six or five stars indicate a major pardon. If the star of the axe in the Heavenly Prison moves abnormally, capital punishment should be carried out. The "Shi School Commentary" says: nine stars forming the chain of the prison indicate the suppression of violence and tyranny.
Heavenly Records Divination XI
The Shi school says: The Heavenly Records consist of nine stars, located to the east of the捆绑 star cluster. (Original book note: One star is located at the fifth degree of the Tail mansion, fifty-one and a half degrees from the North Pole, and more than fifty-six degrees within the Yellow Path.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Heavenly Records are the celestial meridians and parallels, governing the fair resolution of grievances and lawsuits. When these stars are bright together, the royal law is just and upright, without partiality or factionalism, and the world's order is well maintained. The Book of Omens says: The stars of Heavenly Records are used to mark the Nine Provinces and to determine the orientation of maps; the stars of Heavenly Records also govern the calendar and music scales. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the stars of Heavenly Records are damaged or cut off, it signifies mountain collapses, changes in government orders, famine among the people, and the ruler's unrest.
The Shi school says: When the star of Heaven's Record is cut off, the whole country will be in great chaos, and the ruler will face danger. When the star of Heaven's Record is bright, there will be many lawsuits in the country; when the star of Heaven's Record disappears, the government and laws will be ruined. Jiao Yanshou says: When the star of Heaven's Record combines with the female bed, it indicates the death of the king's wife, aunt or cousin due to immorality, or the loss of position due to women interfering in politics. Xi Meng says: When the star of Heaven's Record invades the Milky Way, the ruler will be devoured by others. Ban Gu's "Book of Han · Astronomical Records" says: When the star of Heaven's Record is scattered, it indicates mountain collapses; otherwise, there will be mourning. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the star of Heaven's Record is scattered and cut off, it is either mountain collapses or the death of the ruler. It also says: When the star of Heaven's Record spreads out and runs wildly, the country's order will be disturbed. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The nine stars of Heaven's Record govern the resolution of wrongful cases and lawsuits.
The Weaver Girl Divination for the Twelve Branches
The Shi school says: The Weaver Girl is composed of three stars, located at the eastern end of Tian Ji. (Original note: The largest star is at the eleventh degree of the Dipper mansion, fifty-two degrees away from the North Pole, and sixty-three degrees more than the Yellow Path.) Xi Meng says: The Weaver Girl is also called 'East Bridge.' The "Jingzhou Divination" says: The Weaver Girl is also called 'Heavenly Lady,' being the daughter of the emperor; it is located in the northwest of Niutou, with the three stars arranged in the shape of a tripod. The feet of the stars often face Niutou and Fu Kuang, while the stars of Niutou and Fu Kuang also often face the feet of the Weaver Girl. If this is not the usual state, the price of silk and cloth will double, or there will be mourning. (Original note: Ban Gu's "Book of Han · Astronomical Records" refers to it as the Weaver Girl. Du Yu says: In star divination, the Weaver Girl is a virgin, the granddaughter of the heavenly emperor. However, since the Weaver Girl has an appointment to cross the river on the seventh day of the seventh month, it seems inappropriate to call her a virgin.)
The Shi school says: Weaving Girl oversees the affairs of silk weaving and garment making. The bright star represents the great sage and the mother of the holy emperor, while the two smaller stars indicate the positions of the crown prince and the younger sons. When the three stars shine brightly together, the world is peaceful. The "Poetry Chronicle of the Calendar Pivot" says: Weaving Girl maintains order within the inner court. The "Diagram of Harmony and Truth" says: Weaving Girl is the heavenly maiden, who oversees fruits and vegetables, storage and treasures, to protect the divine, to make clothes, and to establish laws and regulations. Thus, she weaves patterns in an orderly manner, conforming to the heavenly way. Wu Xian says: Weaving Girl is the official in charge of water in the heavens. Xi Meng says: Weaving Girl is equivalent to the position of the Grand Attendant in the palace.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Weaver Girl oversees the storehouses of silk and the five colors. The two small stars after the big star are the positions of the prince. When the three stars shine brightly together, the world is peaceful and silk and colored fabrics are cheap. If the stars are dim, the empress will have worries and silk and colored fabrics will be expensive. If the big star of the Weaver Girl shines fiercely with a fierce light and shoots out rays, then silk will become more expensive. The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: If one of the three stars of the Weaver Girl disappears, war will break out and women's customs will become extravagant. If the Weaver Girl stars are not in their original position, it seems that the world will undergo a change, and troubles will arise from women.
The Shi school says: The path of Zhīnǚ is directly opposite and aligned with Guànsuǒ, and silk and cloth become cheap. If they are not directly opposite and aligned, there will be urgent difficulties in the world, and silk and cloth become expensive. Zhīnǚ governs silk and cloth affairs, and is paired with Fúkuāng as a match. If its star feet always face Fúkuāng, it is auspicious; otherwise, the price of silk and cloth will change. If one of the three stars is missing a foot, it indicates that a woman is sick; some say it also indicates military action.
Jiao Yanshou said: The star of Zhinu intrudes into the Milky Way, indicating that all women will have to cross water, and the queen mother is also like this. Xi Meng said: The star of Zhinu appears in the east in the morning, with a red color and bright light, indicating prosperity in women's needlework; if the light is not bright, then women's needlework will decline; usually observe it on the first day of the tenth lunar month as well as the sixth and seventh days. Xi Meng also said: If the star of Zhinu deviates from the norm, it indicates mountain shaking and earth quaking, or cattle suffering from disease. Chen Zhuo said: When the king is extremely filial, the heavenly spirits and earth deities are pleased, and the three stars of Zhinu will all shine brightly, leading to peace throughout the world. The Shi school praised: The three stars of Zhinu preserve the divine, collect treasures to serve the king.
The Heavenly Market Enclosure (Tian Shi Yuan) is used for divination and consists of thirteen sections.
The Shi school says: The Tian Shi Yuan has a total of twenty-two stars. (Original note: Zhang Heng's "Holometer" says: Tian Shi has twenty-two stars, and there is another one in front of the Emperor's Seat.) It is located to the northeast of the Room Mansion and the Heart Mansion. (Original note: The star on the right side of the Tian Shi gate is located more than one degree in the Tail Mansion, more than ninety-four degrees from the North Pole, and slightly more than one degree within the Yellow Path.) Xi Meng says: The stars of Tian Shi Yuan are called "Tian Fu" and "Chang Cheng." Wu Xian says: Tian Shi is the official in charge of water management under the five emperors. Xi Meng says: Tian Shi is the market of the Son of Heaven.
The Shijing Wei says: The celestial market governs the gathering of people. The Ch'unqiu Wei says: The celestial market governs the weighing and measuring of things. The Jingzhou Zhuan says: The great star in the northwest of the celestial market is located about three feet south of it, and is called "Tian Cao." The Shi school says: The market is a place where people from all directions gather for pleasure; it is the territory of the imperial capital, governing the place where the king sits. Therefore, the throne of the emperor is set within the market, which is a clear sign of a wise ruler. Xi Meng says: The wall of the celestial market is like a heavenly banner, and it is good when it is very bright; brightness indicates low grain prices.
The Shi school says: The Tian Shi Yuan has twenty-two stars, governing the western border states. The first star on the left side of the market gate governs Song, the next governs Wei, then Yan, then the Eastern Sea, then Xu, then Tai Shan, then Qi, then the River Center, then the Nine Rivers, then Zhao, then Wei, then Zhongshan, then Hejian. The first star on the right side of the market gate governs Han, the next governs Chu, then Liang, then Ba, then Shu, then Qin, then Zhou, then Zheng, then Jin. If a star shines brightly outward, it indicates that the state it governs has someone plotting rebellion. If the star is dim, small, and weak, it indicates that the state's city is declining, and the king should cultivate virtue and govern wisely to support it.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the stars in the Heavenly Market Enclosure are dim and not bright, and the stars in the market are few, then this year will be poor, with damage to the five grains, high grain prices, and people suffering from hunger. If the stars in the Heavenly Market are in order and bright and moist, then the produce will be abundant and can be stored; if the stars in the market are dim and the market is dull, then the stored grain and goods should be distributed. The Containing Literature says: When a ruler treats his relatives with proper distinctions of nearness and distance, the Heavenly Market will be upright and bright. (Original book note: Song Jun's commentary says: When a ruler treats his relatives with proper distinctions of nearness and distance, and there are many relatives, the Heavenly Market will correspondingly be bright, indicating that many people are involved in the response.)
The Shi school says: When the star of the Heavenly Market is bright, the officials in charge of the market become strict and oppressive, and merchants gain no profit; when the star is dim and small, the officials are weak, and merchants instead gain more profit. When many stars in the Heavenly Market are bright, the harvest is abundant; when few stars are present, the harvest is not abundant, indicating a time of scarcity. Xi Meng says: When the stars of the Heavenly Market are bright and grand, grain prices are low; when they are not bright, grain prices are high. When there are many small stars in the Heavenly Market, the people are wealthy. The Shi school's commentary says: There are twenty-two stars in the Heavenly Market, symbolizing outer officials.
The position of the Emperor's Seat is divided into fourteen sections.
The Shi school says: The Imperial Seat is a single star located within the Heavenly Market Enclosure, to the west of the Watch Star. (Original note: Its position is at fifteen and a half degrees of the Tail Mansion, seventy-one degrees more than a little from the North Pole, and thirty-nine degrees within the Yellow Path.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Imperial Seat is the celestial court, symbolizing the ruler. The Shi school says: The Imperial Seat is the exalted position of Heaven, the noble deity in the heavens; it holds the sharpness of yin and yang, controls the power of life and death, comprehends the fundamental nature of all things' transformation, guards the key to existence and destruction, harmonizes the energies of yin and yang, and corresponds to the boundaries of the four seasons. When the star of the Imperial Seat is bright and moist, the Son of Heaven will have good fortune, and his authority will be effectively exercised; if the star is dim and small, it is an omen of misfortune. If this star disappears, the ruler will face troubles, which will affect a great person, leading to chaos throughout the land and the outbreak of military conflict, with a duration of two years. The Shi school's praise says: The Imperial Seat is a single star, exalted in position and moving in accordance with the time.
Observing the stars for divination, part fifteen.
The Shi school says: The waiting star is only one, located to the east of the Emperor's seat. (Original book note: Its position is at two and a half degrees of the Winnowing Basket mansion, at seventy-three degrees more than the North Pole, and thirty-eight degrees more within the Yellow Path.) Wu Xian says: The waiting star belongs to the official of earth. The Shi school says: The waiting star is used to observe yin and yang, to monitor the movements of distant states and the barbarians, thus foreseeing their plots and omens. The waiting star governs the changes of the seasons; if goods and wealth are secure and orderly, it is auspicious. When the waiting star is bright, all the states will have the same customs and the royal way will be smooth and prosperous, with strong ministers. If the star is dim, weak, and faint, the royal way will not be smooth, and the ministers will be weak. If this star moves, the ruler will not be at peace, and the time limit will not exceed one year. If this star disappears, the ruler will lose his position, and the time limit will not exceed one year. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the waiting star is bright and grand, the four directions of the barbarians will expand outward and invade. When the waiting star is faint, the country will be stable. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The waiting star is located in the east, governing the observation of yin and yang.
The Sixteen Divination Methods of Eunuchs
The Shi school says: The宦者 stars are four in total, located to the west of the Imperial Seat. (Original commentary: To the south, one star is at the twelfth degree of the Tail mansion, seventy-two and a half degrees from the North Pole, and thirty-eight degrees within the Yellow Path.) The宦者 stars represent officials such as the Constant Attendant and the Yellow Gate, who are close attendants serving the monarch, and they are constantly attending to the Imperial Seat in the Heavenly Market. All宦者 are people who have been castrated, hence they are positioned to the west of the Imperial Seat; when their color is dim, it is auspicious; when bright, it is ominous. Xi Meng says: If the宦者 stars deviate from the norm, there will be troubles within the officialdom of the宦者; since the宦者 are people who have been punished, they indicate that someone will be executed in the market. The Shi school's commentary says: The宦者 are located to the west, standing in attendance by the monarch's side.
The Seventeenth Divination of the Dipper Star
The Shi school says: The Dipper consists of five stars, located to the southwest of the宦者. (Original book note: The first star is slightly more than ten degrees in the Tail mansion, seventy-two degrees from the North Pole, and twenty-five degrees within the Yellow Path.) Xi Meng says: "Dipper" refers to the one in charge, who is responsible for distributing goods using measuring instruments. If these stars are bright, it is auspicious; if they are dim, it is ominous; if these stars disappear, there will be famine. Alternatively, if these stars are facing upward, the measures of sheng, dou, and hu in the world will be unfair; if they are facing downward, the harvest will be abundant in weeds but poor in grain. Moreover, if the Dipper stars are dim, the grain will not mature, leading to a great famine, and people will eat each other. The "Shi School's Commentary" says: There is a Dipper star in the south, which governs fairness in measurement.
The Celestial Official Star Divination: Eighteen Sections
The Shi school says: The two stars of Zongzheng are located to the southeast of the throne. (Original book note: The southern star is at the second degree of Ji Xu, 84 degrees from the north pole, and 27.5 degrees inside the Yellow Path.) Zongzheng oversees the royal family's descendants and symbolizes the minor branches. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: Zongzheng represents the royal clan, overseeing the identification of the names and categories of all things in the market; if these two stars are not in their original positions, there will be many people from the royal clan and the imperial family who are dismissed or die.
The Shi school says: "Zong" means master, and "Zheng" means government; the Zongzheng star in the market area oversees the administration of the names and titles of all things. If this star deviates from the norm, the official in charge of this duty will either be dismissed from office or die, and the edicts will be changed. If the Zong star loses its original color, there will be an incident in the Zongzheng office. When the Zongzheng star is bright and prominent, the royal family is strong; if the star is dim, the royal family is weak. The "Shi Shi Zan" says: the two Zongzheng stars are symbols of the ministers of the royal family.
The star of the clan is observed in nineteen instances.
The Shi school says: The four stars of Zongren are located to the east of Zongzheng. (Original book note: One star is located at the seventh and a half degrees of Jixu, 85 degrees from the North Pole, and 28 degrees within the Yellow Path.) The Yuanmingbao says: Zongren oversees the worship of ancestors and presents offerings according to the seasons. The Shi school says: Zongren oversees the rites of filial piety and sacrifice, symbolizing the great clan, embodying the meaning of sincerity, harmony, affection, and closeness among relatives. The Hanwenjia says: When clan members interact in an orderly manner, the stars of Zongren appear upright and bright.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the stars representing the clan are bright and normal, the royal family will be orderly, and the ruler will have good fortune and prosperity; if they are unstable and abnormal, there will be discord among the clan, and the ruler's relatives may suffer calamity; or there may be many deaths among the noblemen in the clan. The Shi school says: If the stars representing the clan are scattered and broken, a great strange bird will appear. The Shi school's praise says: The four stars of the clan represent the order of kinship and proximity.
The Twenty Divination Stars
The Shi school says: The Zong Star consists of two stars, located to the north of the Zong person. (Original book note: One star is located at the ninth degree of Ji Xu mansion, seventy-nine degrees away from the north pole, and twenty-three degrees more within the Yellow Path.) The Yuan Ming Bao says: The Zong Star governs the ancestral sacrifices and offerings. The Shi school says: The Zong Star distinguishes between close and distant relatives, symbolizing the royal family, referring to those connected by blood relation with the emperor, who support the royal house. The Huangdi Zhan says: When the Zong Stars are bright and close to each other, the emperor and his relatives are harmonious, and the royal family is well-ordered; when these two stars are dim and distant from each other, the emperor's relatives and the royal family will be indifferent to each other, or some may plot against the emperor, causing the ruler to have worries. The Shi school's praise says: The Zong Star consists of two stars, governing the distinction of kindness and righteousness without partiality.
East and West both have twenty-one.
The Shi school says: East Cold consists of four stars, located to the northeast of the Room mansion; (Original book note: A star is located south of the second degree of the Heart mansion, at a distance of one hundred and three degrees from the North Pole, slightly more than two degrees within the Yellow Path.) West Cold consists of four stars, located to the north of the Room mansion. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: East Cold and West Cold are called 'Great Brightness,' arranged on either side of the Room mansion, each having four stars aligned in a row, forming the path that the planet Mars travels along; if Mars does not follow this path, it will turn back. The Shi school says: East Cold and West Cold, these eight stars, are the two doors of the Room mansion, often serving as a barrier in front of the emperor to shield the inner court and prevent secret misconduct.
Xi Meng said: Dong Xian and Xi Xian are the paths of the sun and moon; if the sun, moon, and five planets do not follow these paths, there will certainly be disturbances and chaos. The Jingzhou Divination says: Dong Xian and Xi Xian are the gates of Fang Su; when all the stars are bright, they appear neatly arranged like the gate posts, which is auspicious for the Son of Heaven and leads to the prosperity and flourishing of descendants. The Shi school said: the four stars of Dong Xian are located in the northeast of Fang Su, governing the movement of the Sun; bright stars indicate good fortune; dim stars indicate misfortune.
The *Sea Divination* says: If the stars of Dongxian and Xixian are bright and arranged in a line, the king's decree will be effectively implemented, and the concubines will remain in their respective palaces. However, if these stars are dim, small, scattered, or even hidden, the king's authority will weaken, the female rulers will be unrestrained, indulging in luxury and excess without restraint, and those guarding the palace will face troubles. It may also indicate that palace attendants will be punished, and it is said that a noble concubine may be dismissed. Jiao Yanshou said: If the star Dongxian approaches the hook and bell by ten days, there will be a minister who spreads false accusations and harms the king. If the star Xixian is in front and approaches, and if it shoots out a bright芒 and wavers brightly for ten days, someone who understands heavenly omens will enter the palace to cause harm. The *Shi School Commentary* says: The stars of Dongxian and Xixian govern matters of preventing licentiousness.
The Twenty-two Divinations of Tian Jiang Star
The Shi school says: The Tian Jiang constellation consists of four stars, located to the north of the Tail mansion. (Original book note: One star is located slightly beyond the sixth degree of the Tail mansion, at a distance of 111 degrees from the North Pole, and two and a half degrees outside the Yellow Path.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the stars of Tian Jiang appear as usual, with a faint light, yin and yang are in harmony, and droughts and floods are appropriate; if these stars are bright and prominent, the whole country will experience great floods, rivers and seas will overflow, crops will not mature, and people will suffer from famine due to floods; if these stars are dim or uneven, the price of horses will rise, or it is said that many horses will die.
The Shi school said: The star of Tianjiang in the Milky Way, when it moves about in the middle of the Milky Way, indicates the outbreak of military campaigns. The military force spreads like flowing sand, resulting in many deaths, so people have to cross rivers over corpses. If these stars disappear, the ferry crossings and bridges will be blocked. They also said these stars should not be bright; once they move, there will be sudden floods that submerge cities and block major roads. Xi Meng said: The star of Tianjiang should not be clearly visible in the Milky Way. If it really appears in the river, there will be a large-scale military campaign, with carriages, horses, and cavalry filling the plains and roads blocked. The Shi school said: The four stars of Tianjiang govern matters related to the Wealth star and the Mother star. If this star is bright, great floods cannot be prevented.
The Twenty-Third Star of the Construction Group is used for divination.
The Shi school says: The star of Jian is located north of the Dipper. (Original note: The star is one to the west, slightly more than seven degrees of the Dipper mansion, and slightly more than 113 degrees from the North Pole, within the Yellow Path by one degree.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star of Jian is also called "Heavenly Flag" and "Heavenly Gate." Wu Xian says: The star of Jian belongs to the officials of earth. Xi Meng says: The star of Jian is the main gateway of heaven, governing matters of deliberation, also serving as the Heavenly Drum and the Heavenly Star of Movement. The two stars to the south are the Heavenly Treasury; the two in the middle are the market, also the weapons of斧锧; the two above are the banners, also the courtyard of the Treasury Star and Command Star. The area between the Dipper and the star of Jian is the path where the sun, moon, and stars travel.
The Sea of Divination says: The Dipper mansion is the gateway where yin and yang come to an end and begin anew, the place of great governance and peace, and the origin of the system of musical scales and calendar calculations. Xi Meng says: Between the Winnowing Basket mansion and the Dipper mansion lies the lower path along which the sun, moon, and five planets travel. The Poetic Classic of the Grand View says: When the Dipper mansion wavers, labor and toil are endless. Jiao Yanshou says: Within the Dipper mansion there is a star that is incomplete. If this star joins with the Dipper mansion for a month, the ruler will suffer loss; if two stars join for ten days, there will be loss; if three stars join for three days, there will be loss or illness.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the stars of Jian are arranged in pairs facing each other, the world is stable; if the upper and lower stars are similar and disordered, the world will be in turmoil and the ruler will have worries. The *Shi School* says: When the Jian stars are bright and prominent, the ministers are loyal and filial, and the emperor follows the will of heaven; if the Jian stars are not bright and prominent, and their sizes are uneven, the king loses the right path, and loyal ministers are not appointed. The *Shi School Commentary* says: The Jian stars consist of six, which connect to the Southern Dipper, and they govern whether the country's sun and moon follow their proper course.
The star Tian Bian is used for divination, covering twenty-four aspects.
The Shi school says: The Tian Bian constellation consists of nine stars, located to the north of Jian Star. (Original book note: To the west, one star is located at more than six degrees of the Dipper mansion, at more than ninety degrees from the North Pole, and within the Yellow Path by more than seventeen degrees.) The Shi school also says: The Tian Bian nine stars are located outside the Tian Shi Yuan enclosure, serving as the chief officials of the market officials. They oversee the prices of goods in the market and the registration of merchants in the market records. When commercial taxes are collected and merchants arrive with their goods, taxes should be levied according to the value. If these stars are bright and prominent, the market's goods will flourish; if these stars are dim, all things will decline and suffer loss.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star Tian Bian is good when it is bright and prosperous; in such a case, the world is peaceful, all things flourish, and jewels and treasures are cheap. If these stars are dim, the world will be empty, all things decline, grain will not mature, and treasures will be expensive. The Book of Music says: The star Tian Bian corresponds to the musical tone 'Yu'. It should be observed on the Renzi day. If the tone Yu is disordered, there will be worries and dangers, scarcity of resources, hardship for the people, and drought will occur. The Shi school says: The star Tian Bian governs respect and frugality; if it is bright, it is auspicious; if it is dim, it is ominous. Jiao Yanshou says: When the star Tian Bian is near the star Jian, if it is bright and prosperous and shaking, there will be female music in the country, and the ruler will suffer from it. The Shi School's Commentary says: The nine stars of Tian Bian govern the precious goods in the market; if these stars are bright and prosperous, all things will flourish.
The star cluster of the Heavenly Drum is used for divination and has twenty-five stars.
The Shi school says: The three stars of He Gu and the nine stars of Qi are all located to the north of Qian Niu. (Original book note: The bright star is located south of the Twenty-second degree of Niu Dou, at a distance of eighty-five degrees from the North Pole, and is more than twenty-eight degrees within the Yellow Path.) The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: He Gu is also called "Tian Gu" (Heavenly Drum), "San Wu" (Three Wus), and "San Jiangjun" (Three Generals); the central star is the general, the star on the left is the left general, and the star on the right is the right general, all being generals under the emperor's banner.
Xi Meng said: He Gu is also called "Ti Gu", "Tian Dong", and "Tian Jiu". Wu Xian said: He Gu belongs to the metal official. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Book of Celestial Officials" said: The bright star of He Gu is the supreme general. The "He Cheng Tu" said: When all the stars of He Gu are complete, they govern the military drums, the axes and halberds used in punishment, the outer borders of the states and prefectures, and also the military emotions of anger and joy.
The Huo Lian Tu says: The three stars of He Gu appear in a furious black color, indicating that the command for military action has been decided and will not change. The Shi school says: The flag star of He Gu rises high and spreads out, which is a sign of a great general going to war. One should not confront it directly but should attack in the direction indicated by the flag star, which will lead to a great victory. The Shi school also says: When the flag star of He Gu is bright, there will be military actions with banners raised. When interpreting omens, one should determine which country corresponds to the day's heavenly stem and earthly branch. If the flag star is crooked and irregular, it indicates that the general is incompetent in governing the army, the orders are disordered, the soldiers are arrogant and difficult to control, and there is mutual bullying between the general and his ministers. If the position of the flag star is not proper, there will be warfare in the world. The Huangdi text says: When the star of He Gu is curved and not straight, the commander-in-chief makes improper plans and loses control of the military power.
The Shi school says: If the stars of He Gu are not properly aligned or if their color changes, it indicates military affairs will have troubles and generals may be dismissed; if the stars tremble or show angrypointed rays, it indicates military movements and generals going to war; He Gu should be upright and straight, bright and large, with a yellowish, smooth and lustrous color, in which case there will be no warfare in the world and generals will be auspicious. The Shi school also says: The three stars of He Gu are also called 'San Wu', and if the three stars change their positions, warfare will arise. Xi Meng says: If the star Tian Gu (i.e., He Gu) shows an angry color, the price of horses will rise; this star official is also called 'Yuan Gu'. The Shi Zan says: The official of He Gu controls drums and flags, it is a place for issuing commands and establishing authority, set up to guard strategic points and secretly observe the enemy's plans and military campaigns; if the flag star is crooked or irregular, it indicates disorder in the system and conflicts between superiors and subordinates.
