The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Forty-six

石氏曰：“日方南，太白居其南；日方北，太白居其北，曰盈；侯王不寧，用兵進，吉；退，凶。日方南，太白居其北；日方北，太白居其南，曰縮；侯王憂，用兵退，吉；進，凶；遲，吉；疾，凶。”（日方南謂夏至後也，日方北謂冬至後也。）

The Shi school says: When the Star of brightness and prestige moves southward, the Bright White Star is located south of it; when the Star of brightness and prestige moves northward, the Bright White Star is located north of it: this is called "Ying"; it indicates that the feudal princes and kings will not be at peace. In warfare, advancing is auspicious, while retreating is inauspicious. Conversely, when the Star of brightness and prestige moves southward and the Bright White Star is located north of it; when the Star of brightness and prestige moves northward and the Bright White Star is located south of it: this is called "Suo"; it indicates that the feudal princes and kings will have worries. In warfare, retreating is auspicious, while advancing is inauspicious; being slow is auspicious, while rushing forward is inauspicious. (Original book note: The phrase "the sun is moving southward" refers to the period after the summer solstice when the sun moves southward; "the sun is moving northward" refers to the period after the winter solstice when the sun moves northward.)

《元命包》曰：“太白贏，則將相謀；太白縮，則后族患；圓而不行，我侍為君。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出於巳，殺大將；出於未，陽國傷。”《春秋緯文耀鉤》曰：“太白躍，沉浮，主代提，天下更紀，世有名師。”（宋均曰：主德不一，則攝提代移，更紀，授有令名，能天下師表者也。）

The Yuan Ming Bao says: When the star Tai Bai expands and advances, it indicates that ministers and generals have secret plans; when Tai Bai contracts and retreats, it signifies that the royal family will suffer calamity; if the star is full but remains stationary, it means that a court attendant will usurp the throne. The Jingzhou Zhuan says: When Tai Bai appears in the position of Si, it indicates the death of a general; when it appears in the position of Wei, it signifies damage to the Yang state. The Chunqiu Wei · Wen Yao Gou says: When Tai Bai moves unpredictably, rising and falling suddenly, it indicates that the star Shetí will shift its position, leading to a change of dynasty, the world will see a renowned teacher-like figure. (Original book note: Song Jun said, if the ruler's virtue is not consistent, the position of Shetí will change; the term 'gengji' refers to transferring the mandate of heaven to a person with a good reputation who can be a teacher to the world.)

《荊州占》曰：“太白見東方，上至巳，皆更政；出西方，順行過巳，不及午，有霸國；及午，陰國令天下。”（案班固《天文志》曰：三年秋，太白出西方，有光，幾中乍北乍南，過期乃入，是時項羽為楚王，而漢已定三秦，與相距滎陽，幾中是秦地戰將勝而漢國將興也。晉灼注曰：幾中近踰未地也。）

The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the bright star appears in the east and moves upward to the Si position, it indicates changes in government orders; when it appears in the west and moves smoothly past the Si position but has not yet reached the Wu position, it signifies the emergence of a hegemonic state; when it reaches the Wu position, it indicates that the state of the Yin direction will issue commands throughout the world. (Original commentary: According to Ban Gu's "Book of Han · Astronomical Records," in the autumn of the third year of the Han dynasty, the bright star appeared in the west, its light shining brightly, almost reaching the zenith, suddenly leaning north and then south, exceeding the usual time before disappearing. At that time, Xiang Yu was the King of Chu, while the Han had already pacified the three Qins, and both sides were holding each other in Xingyang; the phrase "ji zhong" should correspond to the situation where the forces of the Qin region were about to achieve victory and the Han dynasty was about to rise. Jin Zhu's commentary says: "ji zhong" refers to approaching and slightly surpassing the Wei position.)

郗萌曰：“太白出戌入未，是謂犯地行刑，絕天維，國大小暴，兵將多傷。”《荊州占》曰：“太白行小失道，其將為奸；行大失道，其將為大奸，其國將坐之，逆行尤甚。”石氏曰：“其國失殺秋政，則太白失行。”巫咸曰：“太白出西方，失道有過，八月不盡九月至，一日期三月。”

Xi Meng said: Tai Bai starts from the Xu position and disappears into the Wei position, which is called "violating the earth's path and executing punishment," cutting off the heavenly framework, indicating that the country, regardless of its size, will suffer from tyranny, with many casualties among soldiers and generals. The Jingzhou Divination says: when Tai Bai deviates slightly from its usual path, the general will act unjustly; when it deviates greatly, the general is a great villain, and the country will be punished accordingly. The Shi school says: if a country loses the autumn policy of warfare, Tai Bai will deviate from its normal course. Wu Xian said: when Tai Bai appears in the west, deviating from its usual path and committing an error, signs will appear before the end of the eighth month and the beginning of the ninth month. For each day it deviates, the consequence will manifest after three months.

又占曰：“太白失行而南，是謂金入火，有兵兵罷；不出三年，國有男喪，若有兵。”（《魏武帝兵法》曰：不有破軍，必有屠城，北國當之。）《荊州占》曰：“太白失行而北，金入水，災大兵起。”（案《宋書天文志》曰：“晉惠帝光熙元年四月，太白失行，自翼入尾箕，占曰：太白失行而北，是謂反生，不有破軍，必有屠城。五月汲桑攻鄴，魏郡太守馬嵩出戰，大敗桑，遂害東燕王騰，殺萬餘人，焚燒，魏時宮室皆盡也。）

Another divination passage says: When the star Tai Bai deviates from its normal path and moves southward, this is called "metal entering fire," indicating that there will first be military conflicts, followed by their cessation; within three years, there will be the death of a male within the country, or another military campaign. (The original commentary cites the "Military Methods of the Emperor Wu of Wei" which states: Either the army will suffer a great defeat, or there will be a massacre in a northern country.) The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the star Tai Bai deviates from its normal path and moves northward, this is called "metal entering water," indicating the emergence of calamities and large-scale warfare. (The original commentary notes: According to the "History of the Southern Dynasties · Astronomical Records," in the fourth month of the first year of Guangxi of Emperor Hui of the Jin Dynasty, the star Tai Bai deviated from its normal path, moving from the mansion of Yi to the mansions of Wei and Ji. The divination passage states: When Tai Bai deviates from its normal path and moves northward, this is called "reverse birth." Either the army will suffer a great defeat, or there will be a massacre. In that same month of May, Ji Sang attacked the city of Ye, and the governor of Wei Commandery, Ma Song, engaged in battle and was defeated by Ji Sang. Ji Sang then killed the Eastern Yan King Sima Teng and massacred over ten thousand people, setting fire to the city, and the palaces built during the Cao Wei dynasty were reduced to ashes.)

《荊州占》曰：“太白出，至其國之日而獨不見，其兵弱；若有此，可擊，必能得其將。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出東方，失行而北，中國敗；失行而南，倍海國敗。”石氏曰：“太白出西方，失行，倍海之國敗；（《天文志》曰：夷狄敗）其出東方，失行，中國敗。”《荊州占》曰：“太白有不見三日，有亡國敗師。”又占曰：“太白一南一北、九侯皆伏。”又占曰：“太白一東一西，害於侯王。”（謂有免侯王也。）

The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Tai Bai appears, if on the day it is supposed to appear for a certain country it does not show up, it indicates that country's military strength is weak; in such a case, an attack will certainly capture its generals. Zhongjiao Zhan also says: When Tai Bai appears in the east and deviates from its normal course to the north, it indicates the defeat of the Central Plains states; if it deviates to the south, it indicates the defeat of the coastal states. The Shi school says: When Tai Bai appears in the west and its movement is abnormal, it indicates the defeat of the coastal states (note from the original text: Han Shu · Tianwen Zhi here says 'barbarian states will be defeated'); if it appears in the east and its movement is abnormal, it indicates the defeat of the Central Plains states. Zhongjiao Zhan says: If Tai Bai disappears for three consecutive days, it indicates the occurrence of a country's downfall and military defeat. Another divination says: If Tai Bai moves suddenly south and north, it indicates that the nine feudal princes will all hide and remain silent. Another divination says: If Tai Bai moves suddenly east and west, the harm will fall upon the feudal princes. (note from the original text: This refers to the possibility of feudal princes being dismissed from their positions.)

又占曰：“太白在東方，以始出為位，在月南為得行，在月北為失行；不有破軍，必有屠城；與月相過失行，月不盡，一日；二月，二日；三月，三日；四月，四日；五月，五日；六月，六日；七月，七日；八月，八日；九月，九日，而兵起。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出西方，下行一舍，如下北；兵將當有戮者。”郗萌曰：“太白出東方，若西方，過營室，強國君有興者；不及營室，而反還入，強國有敗者。”

Another divination passage states: When the planet Tai Bai is in the east, take its initial position as the reference point. If its movement is to the south of the moon, it indicates proper course; if to the north, it indicates improper course. Once it is improper, either the army will collapse or there will be a massacre of the city. When Tai Bai crosses over the moon and its course is improper, the time of occurrence is calculated by adding days according to the months: in the first month, it will happen one day later; in the second month, two days; in the third month, three days; in the fourth month, four days; in the fifth month, five days; in the sixth month, six days; in the seventh month, seven days; in the eighth month, eight days; in the ninth month, nine days, at which time military actions will arise. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Tai Bai appears in the west and moves downward through one mansion, like moving slightly to the north, it indicates that some soldiers and generals will be executed. Xi Meng says: When Tai Bai appears in the east or west and passes over the mansion of Shixu, it indicates that a strong country's ruler will have a flourishing trend; if it does not reach Shixu and then retreats and hides, it indicates that a strong country will face a downfall.

《海中占》曰：“主好聽讒，廢直大臣，女子為政，刑法誅殺，不以道理；則太白逆行，天鳴地坼，歲多暴風，大水，庶民負子而逃，孕多死，麥豆不收。”劉向《洪範》曰：“好戰功，輕百姓，飾城郭，侵邊境，是謂不艾；厥極憂，時生蟊，則太白變色，逆行。”郗萌曰：“太白逆行，變色；簡宗廟，廢禱祀，去祭祀，逆天行。”《荊州占》曰：“太白逆行，失常，有兵革。”

The Sea of the Sea Divination says: If the sovereign likes to believe in slander, dismisses upright ministers, allows women to interfere in state affairs, and applies punishments without reason, then the star Tai Bai will move retrograde, the Star of Emptiness will emit a sound, the earth will crack, there will be frequent storms and floods in a year, people will carry their children and flee, many pregnant women will die, and there will be no harvest of wheat and beans. Liu Xiang's "Hongan Wuxing Zhuan" says: If one seeks military achievements greedily, despises the people, focuses only on fortifying cities, and disturbs the borders, this is called "Bu Ai," meaning not knowing when to stop; its ultimate consequence is calamity, and at that time there will be a plague of pests, so Tai Bai will change color and move retrograde. Xi Meng says: Tai Bai moving retrograde and changing color is because of neglecting the ancestral temples, abandoning prayers, removing sacrifices, and violating the way of heaven. The Jiangzhou Divination says: Tai Bai moving retrograde and losing its normal state indicates there will be warfare and disorder.

又占曰：“王者失於秋政，則太白逆行，變色，揚芒，與他星含斗，環繞犯乘，變為妖星，彗掃其害庭，國破主死，天下皆兵，王者修德赦罪，存孤恤寡，薄賦省徭，可得無咎。”《荊州占》曰：“太白始出，逆行；不可以逆戰，大凶，敗亡。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出東方，逆行，不至巳而返，陽國強、陰國敗，戰不勝；一曰陽國有興者。”《荊州占》曰：“太白東方逆行，過巳不至午，有霸國；及午，陽國令天下；一曰陽國霸。”石氏曰：“太白出西方，逆行至四正，西方之國吉；出東方，逆行至四正，東方之國吉。”

Another divination passage says: If the king fails in his policies during the autumn season, then the star Tai Bai will move retrograde, change color, emit a bright ray, and connect with other stars to fight and encircle, thereby invading and overpowering. It will then transform into a demon star, like a comet, sweeping across the heavens and causing calamity, indicating the destruction of the country, the death of the king, and chaos throughout the land. At this time, if the king can cultivate virtue, pardon criminals, care for orphans, support widows, reduce taxes, and lighten labor, he can avoid disaster. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: If Tai Bai appears and moves retrograde immediately, it is not advisable to fight against it, for great misfortune will follow and defeat will come. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: If Tai Bai appears in the east and moves retrograde, and before reaching the position of Si it turns back, this indicates that the country of the Yang side will be strong and the country of the Yin side will be defeated, and the battle will not be successful; another interpretation is that there will be a rising power in the Yang side. The "Jingzhou Divination" further says: If Tai Bai appears in the east and moves retrograde, passing through the position of Si but not yet reaching the position of Wu, this indicates the emergence of a hegemonic state; if it reaches the position of Wu, then the country of the Yang side will issue commands to the world; another interpretation is that the country of the Yang side will become hegemonic. The Shi school says: If Tai Bai appears in the west and moves retrograde to the four cardinal positions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, the western country will be auspicious; if it appears in the east and moves retrograde to the four cardinal positions, the eastern country will be auspicious.

《文曜鉤》曰：“太白當出不出，陰匿留，主沉湎，大臣有謀。”石氏曰：“太白當出不出，當入不入，是謂失舍；不有破軍，必有死王亡國。”（案《天官書》曰：必有國君之墓。又《宋書天文志》曰：晉武帝咸寧四年九月，太白當見不見，是時羊祜表請伐吳，上許之，五年十一月兵出，太白始夕見西方，太康元年三月大破吳軍，孫皓面縛請死，吳國遂亡，應之。）

The Wenyao Gou says: When the star Tai Bai should appear but does not, hiding and lingering in darkness, it indicates the ruler indulging in wine and women, and ministers plotting secretly. The Shi school says: When Tai Bai should appear but does not, or should disappear but does not, this is called "shish" (loss of dwelling); it is not the defeat of the army, but there will certainly be the death of the king and the downfall of the state. (Original book note: According to the Records of the Grand Historian, the Heavenly Officials Book, one must add a tomb for the king. Also, the Book of the Later Han, Heavenly Officials Records, states that in the ninth month of the fourth year of Xianning during Emperor Wu of Jin's reign, Tai Bai did not appear when it should have; at that time, Yang Hu submitted a memorial requesting an attack on Eastern Wu, and Emperor Wu approved. In the eleventh month of the fifth year, the army set out, and Tai Bai appeared in the west in the evening. In the third month of the first year of Taikang, the Wu army was defeated, Sun Hao surrendered bound and begged for death, and Wu thus fell, which exactly corresponds to this omen.)

《荊州占》曰：“太白未當入而入，天下聚糧。”石氏曰：“太白當出而不出，當入而不入，天下偃兵，兵在外而入。”（《荊州占》曰：有軍則罷。）《文曜鉤》曰：“太白不當出而出，主躁臣熾，軍破主死，兵馬滋。”《荊州占》曰：“太白當出而出，外有急兵；出南方，南方急；出北方，北方急。”石氏曰：“太白出東方，為東方入為東方；出西方，為西方入為南方。又曰：所居久，其國利。”《荊州占》曰：“居宿如度，其鄉利；易，其鄉凶。”（蘇林注《漢書天文志》曰：疾，過也；一說易鄉爾出入。晉灼曰：上言易而出易，言疾過是。）

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the bright star (Tai Bai) should not be hidden but is hidden, it indicates that the whole country will gather grain. The Shi school says: When the bright star should appear but does not, and should disappear but does not, it indicates that the whole country will cease warfare and recall troops stationed abroad. (The original note cites the *Jingzhou Divination* saying: If there are stationed troops, they should be disbanded.) The *Wenyao Gou* says: When the bright star should not appear but does, it indicates that the ruler will be restless, ministers will be arrogant, armies will collapse, and the ruler will die. Matters concerning military forces will grow increasingly serious. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the bright star appears on schedule, there will be urgent military affairs outside; if it appears from the south, the south will be in crisis; if it appears from the north, the north will be in crisis. The Shi school says: When the bright star appears in the east, its influence should be in the east; when it is hidden, it should still be in the east. When it appears in the west, its influence should be in the west; when it is hidden, it should be in the south. It also says: If it stays in a place for a long time, the region corresponding to that place will be favorable. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the bright star remains in its proper position, the corresponding region will be favorable; if it moves easily, the corresponding region will be unfavorable. (Original note: Su Lin's annotation of the *Han Shu* *Astronomical Records* says that 'ji' means 'guo' (to pass by); another interpretation says 'yi xiang' refers to its unpredictable appearances and disappearances. Jin Zhu says that the previous text discusses 'yi' (easy) and the coming and going of the star, which is precisely the meaning of 'ji guo' (to pass by quickly).)

甘氏曰：“太白政緩，則不出；急，則不入；逆，則凶。”又占曰：“太白未及其時而出，不及其時而入，天下舉兵，所當國亡；以時出而不出，時未入而入，天下偃兵，野有兵者，所當之國大凶。”巫咸曰：“太白可出不出，國且有謀；可入不入，國有置兵；當入不入，過二十日，天下有兵事。”又占曰：“太白可入不入，國且置侯，未可入而入，野有寇。”又占曰：“太白出西方，黃昏而出，陰國之兵強。”

Gan De said: If government affairs are lenient, then Tai Bai will not appear at the proper time; if government affairs are urgent, then Tai Bai will not disappear at the proper time; if the government orders are perverse, then there will be calamity. Another divination says: If Tai Bai appears before its time and disappears before its time, it indicates that the whole world will have military actions, and the country that corresponds will be destroyed; if Tai Bai should appear but does not, and should disappear but does, it indicates that the whole world will cease military actions; if there are still troops stationed in the outskirts, the country that corresponds will suffer great misfortune. Wu Xian said: If Tai Bai should appear but does not, it indicates there will be conspiracy within the country; if Tai Bai should disappear but does not, it indicates the country will station troops; if Tai Bai should disappear but does not, and exceeds twenty days, there will be military actions in the world. Another divination says: If Tai Bai should disappear but does not, it indicates the country will divide its territory and grant fiefs; if Tai Bai should not disappear but does, it indicates there will be bandits in the outskirts. Another divination says: If Tai Bai appears in the west at dusk, it indicates the country of the Yin side will have strong military power.

《天官書》曰：“太白暮食而出，小弱；夜半而出，中弱；雞鳴而出，大弱；是陰陷於陽。”巫咸曰：“太白在東方，平旦而出，東方南方以舉兵，天下不能當；平明而出，東方陽國之兵強；雞嗚而出，其國大弱；黃昏而出，中弱，是謂陽陷於陰。”石氏曰：“太白未當出而出，當入而不入，天下起兵，有破國。”

The Records of the Grand Historian: The Book of Celestial Officials says: When the bright star appears in the evening at mealtime, it indicates a minor decline; when it appears at midnight, it indicates a moderate decline; when it appears at the time of the crowing of the rooster, it indicates a great decline: this is called Yin entering Yang. Wu Xian says: When the bright star appears in the east at dawn, the east and south will mobilize armies at this time, and the whole world will be unable to resist; when it appears at dawn, the military strength of the Yang states in the east will be strong; when it appears at the time of the crowing of the rooster, that state will greatly decline; when it appears at dusk, it indicates a moderate decline: this is called Yang entering Yin. The Shi school says: When the bright star should not appear but does, and should be hidden but is not, it indicates that armies will be raised throughout the land, and some states will perish.

巫咸曰：“太白未當出東方而出東方，色黃白，曰重華；吏民讙譁，事擾不治，民不得耕織，或騷動不得食，使之無然，聽訟得其理，則止。非重華色而重華，人民作為不祥。”

Wu Xian said: The bright star should not appear in the east but does appear in the east, with a yellow and white color, which is called "Chong Hua"; this indicates that officials and common people will be noisy and clamorous, affairs will be chaotic and difficult to manage, common people will be unable to rest contentedly in farming and weaving, and even disturbances will arise to the point of not having enough food. To prevent this from happening, one only needs to adjudicate lawsuits in a reasonable manner, and the chaos will naturally subside. If the color is not that of Chong Hua but is forcibly interpreted as Chong Hua for divination, it will instead bring misfortune to the people's actions.

巫咸曰：“太白未可下而下東方，色黃而不明，名曰少歲；少歲亂行，人民驚惶於野，若牧牛羊；使之不然，斷執死罪以下釋之，如此則止。非少歲色而少歲，其歲飢，百鬼不喜。”

Wu Xian said: The bright star should not descend but instead descends in the east, with a yellow color that is not bright, which is called "Shao Sui." When Shao Sui occurs, the movement and course become chaotic, leading to the common people fleeing in panic in the fields, like driven cattle and sheep. To prevent this, those sentenced to death and below should be reviewed and pardoned, thus the chaos will subside. If the color is not that of Shao Sui but is wrongly interpreted as such, there will be a year of famine, and the hundred spirits will not be pleased.

巫咸曰：“太白未可出西方而出西方，色白者名曰太白；有聚卒；使之不然，止工作，無聚眾，縱市三旬，以當有卒聚，如此則止。非太白色而太白，有兵。”巫咸曰：“太白未可出而出，國且有謀，過二十日，天下有兵事。”

Wu Xian said: The bright star should not appear in the west but does appear in the west, with a pure white color, which is called the "bright star" change; this indicates the gathering of soldiers. To prevent this from happening, stop construction projects, do not gather people, and open the market for thirty days to counteract the gathering of soldiers, and thus the chaos will subside. If the color is not truly white but is forcibly considered as white for divination, then there will be military affairs. Wu Xian also said: The bright star should not appear but does appear, indicating there will be conspiracy within the country. If it lasts more than twenty days, there will be military conflicts throughout the land.

巫咸曰：“太白未可下而下西方，色青白，名曰白肖；白肖亂行，且有甲兵搶攘，民惶惶，徭役以行，百神不享；使之無然，死人於市者勿葬，吏民三月，帶劍佩刀操兵，以當有兵，如此則止。非白肖色而白肖，有喪。”

Wu Xian said: The bright star should not descend but has descended in the west, with a pale white color, which is called "white appearance." If the white appearance moves erratically, there will be military disturbances, people in panic, frequent conscription, and the hundred spirits will not accept the offerings. To prevent this, those who are executed in the market should temporarily not be buried, and officials and common people should carry weapons for three months, using them to counter the military signs, thus the chaos will subside. If the color is not that of white appearance but is wrongly interpreted as such, there will be mourning.

《海中占》曰：“太白出，不上不下，留桑榆門，（晉灼曰：行遲而下也。）病其下國。”（巫咸曰：兵其下國。）班固《天文志》曰：“太白上而疾，未盡期，日過參天，（晉灼曰：參天者三分天過其一，此戍酉之間也）病其封國。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出王羸，百六十日，而上過參天，主尊，令行，民治，無盜賊，少徭賦。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出，上百六十日，不能參天；主卑、令不行，民亂，多盜賊，倍徭賦。”又占曰：“太白未滿日參天，其國亡。”又占曰：“太白以其時出陽，四十日不動，先起兵者，不利。”甘氏曰：“邦將亂謀，太白往守之。”

The Sea of Heaven Divination says: When the bright star appears and remains neither rising nor falling, lingering in the low sky between the regions of Sang and Yu, it indicates that the country beneath it will have troubles. Wu Xian says that this means there will be military conflicts in that country. Ban Gu's Records of the Han Dynasty says: When the bright star moves upward and its speed is too fast, it crosses the position of "Shen Tian" before the appointed time, and within one day it passes over that position. This indicates that the country it is over will have troubles. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the bright star appears, its appearance is strong but its form is thin, and it travels over one hundred and sixty celestial positions to cross the position of "Shen Tian," indicating that the ruler is respected, the government's orders are carried out, the people are well governed, there are no thieves, and the people's burdens are light. The Jingzhou Divination also says: When the bright star appears and after traveling for one hundred and sixty days it has not yet reached the position of "Shen Tian," it indicates that the ruler is weak, the government's orders are not carried out, the people rebel, there are many thieves, and the people's burdens are doubled. Another divination says: If the bright star reaches the position of "Shen Tian" before the expected number of days, the country will be destroyed. Another divination says: If the bright star appears at the proper time in the yang position and remains still for forty days, the one who moves first will suffer misfortune. Gan De says: If a country is about to have internal disturbances and conspiracies, the bright star will appear to guard over that region.

The book Zhongzhou Zhan says: When the bright star appears in the west in the evening, and remains at noon position from morning until dusk, with no travelers on the road, it indicates that the country beneath it will mobilize its army, but it will be unfavorable. The period of this omen is six months. Zhongzhou Zhan also says: When the bright star appears in the west in the evening, and moves to the position corresponding to the first lunar month in the evening, then turns back, it indicates that the ruler of the country beneath it will lose territory. The period of this omen is ninety days. The Shi school says: When the bright star appears for three days and then slightly disappears, and after three more days it reappears fully, this is called "weak and hidden." If there is an army beneath it, the army will surely be defeated and the general will surely die. The Shi school also says: When the bright star disappears for three days and then slightly reappears, and after three more days it disappears completely, it indicates that the country beneath it will have troubles. The army's grain will be eaten by others, and its weapons and equipment will be used by others. Although the soldiers are numerous, the general will still be captured. (Original book note: Ban Gu's Han Shu, Tianwen Zhi says, the country beneath it will worry about its army. Although the army is numerous, the enemy will eat its grain, use its soldiers, and capture its generals.)

《文曜鉤》曰：“太白已入，三日復出，師憂將慮，主大遇。”（宋均曰：大遇，如衛卜追敵師，有夫出征而喪其雄，遇獲敵將也。遇或為愚。）《荊州占》曰：“太白巳出三日而復入，（《天文志》曰：復微也。）入三日而復出，（《天文志》曰：復盛也。）是謂逆伏，其下之國，有敗軍死將，不出其年；今日入，明日出，其君死之。”《荊州占》曰：“太白出西方，三日而反入，其將軍虜。”石氏曰：“太白入七日復出，相死；入十日復出，將軍戰死；入又復出，人君死。”

(Original commentary: Song Jun said that the term 'great fortune' is like the case of Wei's divination about pursuing the enemy, where the oracle said that a man would go to war and lose his strength, but in the end the enemy general was captured; some versions of the text use 'foolish' instead of 'fortune'.) The Jingzhou Divination says: When Tai Bai appears and then disappears three days later, (original commentary: The Han Shu·Astronomical Records says this is returning to dimness.) when it disappears three days later and reappears, (original commentary: The Han Shu·Astronomical Records says this is returning to brightness.) this is called 'reverse disappearance', indicating that the country below will have military defeat and generals dying, but this will not come true in the same year. If Tai Bai disappears today and reappears tomorrow, the sovereign of that country will die. The Jingzhou Divination also says: When Tai Bai appears in the west and then returns to disappear three days later, it indicates that the general will be captured. The Shi school says: When Tai Bai disappears for seven days and then reappears, it indicates the death of the prime minister; when it disappears for ten days and then reappears, it indicates the death of the general; if after disappearing it repeatedly appears and disappears, it indicates the death of the sovereign.

The book "Jingzhou Divination" says: If Tai Bai (the planet Jupiter) does not appear for the expected number of days and then disappears, and later reappears, if it disappears for one day, there will be soldiers dying in battle ten days later; if it disappears for five days, there will be soldiers dying fifty days later; if it disappears for ten days, there will be soldiers dying a hundred days later; by referring to the region corresponding to the day it disappears, one can determine which country will be affected. "Jingzhou Divination" also says: If Tai Bai appears, rises about two or three zhang high, then suddenly disappears and reappears again, continuing this for three, four, or at most five days, a major battle is certain to occur. "Bingshi Yaomi Shu" says: If Tai Bai appears for three days and then disappears, and reappears after three more days, it indicates that the country it appears over will have an army that will suffer defeat; this refers to the country sending out troops; if it is within the country itself, one should be on high alert and not take rash action, even if the enemy challenges, one should not engage in battle; one should only remain vigilant and secretly prepare defenses; once troops are sent out, that is considered "movement." "Wenyao Gou" says: If the negative energy is low and approaches the army, both sides will plot and fight first, the commander of the defeated side will be executed; it also says: those above will be below, and those below will be above, indicating that the general will rebel, causing chaos and alarm throughout the land. "Jingzhou Divination" says: If Tai Bai does not appear for a year, the disaster will be borne by the ruler of the powerful country; if it does not appear for two years, the ruler of the powerful country will die.

石氏曰：“凡太白不經天，若經天，天下革政，民更主，是謂亂紀，人民流亡。”（孟康曰：謂出東入西，出西入東也，太白陰星，出東當伏東，出西當伏西，過午為經天。晉灼曰：日陽也，日出則星亡；晝上午上為經天也。）石氏曰：“太白經天，見午上，秦國王，天下大亂。”

The Shi school says: Tai Bai is usually not "passing through the sky," but once it does, the state will undergo changes in its policies, the people will replace their ruler, which is called "disorder of the order." The people will be displaced and flee. (Note from the original text: Meng Kang says that "passing through the sky" refers to rising in the east and disappearing in the west, or rising in the west and disappearing in the east. Tai Bai is a yin star, so if it rises in the east, it should disappear in the east; if it rises in the west, it should disappear in the west. Crossing the position of Wu is called passing through the sky. Jin Zhu says that the Sun is a yang star, and after the sun rises, all the stars disappear. If Tai Bai rises to the position above Wu during the day, this is called passing through the sky.) The Shi school says: When Tai Bai passes through the sky and appears above the position of Wu, it indicates that a ruler from the state of Qin will rise to power, and the world will be in great turmoil.

《荊州占》曰：“太白晝見於午，名曰經天，是謂亂紀；天下亂，改政易王，人民流亡，棄其子，去其鄉里。”（案《宋書天文志》曰：宋後廢帝元微五年五月戊申，太白晝見午上，光明異常，宋順帝升明元年九月丁亥，太白在翼，晝見，經天，占曰：吏姓，後一年齊受禪之驗。）

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the bright star (Tai Bai) appears in the noon position during the day, it is called "passing across the sky," which is referred to as "disorder of the order." This signifies great chaos throughout the realm, changes in government decrees, the replacement of the ruling family, and the people wandering and abandoning their children, leaving their native villages and towns. (Original commentary: According to the *Song Shu · Astronomical Records*, in the fifth year of Wenyi of the Later废帝 of the Song dynasty, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the bright star appeared above the noon position during the day, its brightness being unusual. In the first year of Shengming of the Song Shun帝, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, the bright star was in the Wing Mansion, visible during the day and passing across the sky. The divination text says this indicates a change in the ruling family (the original text says "change of surname"). The following year, the Xiao Qi dynasty succeeded the Song dynasty, which was the fulfillment of this prophecy.)

《荊州占》曰：“太白夕見，過午亦曰經天，有連頭斬死人，陰國兵強，王天下；女主用事，陽國不利。”《春秋元命包》曰：“殺失則攻戰刑；故太白逆經天，屠君父，外夷徵。”《京房對災異》曰：“人君薄恩無義，懦弱不勝任，則太白失度，經天則變；不救，則四邊大動，蠻貊侵也。”

The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When Tai Bai appears in the evening and crosses the mid-heaven, it is called passing through the sky, indicating continuous beheading and execution, the country of the Yin side will have strong military power, and the general will rule the world; the female ruler will hold power, and the country of the Yang side will be unfavorable. The Spring and Autumn Yuan Meng Bao says: Inappropriate killing and punishment will lead to warfare and punishment; therefore, when Tai Bai movesretrograde and passes through the sky, it signifies the slaughter of the sovereign and father, and the invasion and conquest by foreign tribes. The Jing Fang Dialogue on Catastrophes and Anomalies says: If the ruler is ungrateful and lacks righteousness, weak and incapable, Tai Bai will lose its normal position; once it passes through the sky, there will be great changes; if not corrected, the four borders will be in great disorder, and the barbarians will take advantage to invade.

《春秋文曜鉤》曰：“太白經天，主失樞。”《春秋緯》曰：“彗守角，太白經天；金精之國虛，謀殺作兵。”《春秋漢含孳》曰：“陽弱臣逆，則太白經天。”（陽弱，君宗弱；不堪為主也。）《孝經鉤命訣》曰：“天子失兵，則太白經天。”《洛書洛罪級》曰：“太白經天，不日桀侯代政。”

The Spring and Autumn Wen Yao Gou states: When the bright star passes across the sky, the sovereign loses his central authority. The Spring and Autumn Wei states: When a comet stays in the Horn mansion and the bright star passes across the sky, the country ruled by the metal element becomes empty, and there will be people plotting murder and inciting warfare. The Spring and Autumn Han Han Zi states: When the yang energy weakens and the ministers rebel, the bright star will pass across the sky. (Original note:所谓 yang weakness refers to the decline of the sovereign's clan, which is insufficient to be the ruler of the world.) The Xiao Jing Gou Ming Jue states: When the emperor loses his military power, the bright star will pass across the sky. The Luo Book Luo Zui Ji states: When the bright star passes across the sky, within a few days there will be rebellious feudal lords taking over the government.

巫咸曰：“太白晝見，而經天爭明；而兵起，天下驚，強國弱，女主有名。”《天官書》曰：“太白晝見經天，強國弱，弱國強，女主昌也。”巫咸曰：“太白當戶，其百八十日蚩尤出，兵且起，大將在野。”巫咸曰：“太白上中，天下有一主之命。”又占曰：“太白不發中而中；孟月見之，侯王當之；仲月見之，大將軍當之；季月見之，小民當之。”又占曰：“太白不當過中，是謂絕綱，四國兵起。”

Wu Xian said: Tai Bai is visible during the day, crossing the sky and competing with the Star of Brightness and Prestige for light; at this time, military affairs will arise, causing shock throughout the land, the strong country will turn weak, and the female ruler will become prominent. The Records of the Grand Historian, Book of Celestial Officials, says: When Tai Bai is visible during the day and crosses the sky, it indicates that the strong country will turn weak, the weak country will turn strong, and the female ruler will flourish. Wu Xian said: Tai Bai is in the position of the gate, and after 180 days, a type of demoniacal aura like the Chi You Flag will appear, signaling the outbreak of military affairs, with generals stationed in the open fields. Wu Xian also said: When Tai Bai rises to the middle of the sky, it signifies that the heavens have a mandate for the replacement of the ruler. Another divination says: Tai Bai should not reach the middle of the sky but does so; if seen in the first month, the disaster will fall upon the feudal princes; if seen in the second month, upon the great generals; if seen in the third month, upon the common people. Another divination says: Tai Bai should not cross the middle of the sky, but if it does, it is called 'cutting the loom,' indicating that all four directions' states will rise in arms.

《春秋緯運斗樞》曰：“太白赤芒，世有過，為大臣三公所乘，則太白經天，有此類，則亡引也。”《荊州占》曰：“太白經天，海內悲泣；九州搖動，奮兵負糧。”《春秋緯考異郵》曰：“陪臣行毒，諸謁向尊，則太白經天，主命凶。”

The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Book of the Movement of the Pole Star says: When the star Tai Bai emits a red glow, it indicates that the world has committed errors and the authority of the sovereign is overpowered by the ministers and the Three Excellencies; in such a case, Tai Bai will appear across the sky, and such omens indicate that the state's destiny will not continue. The Jiangzhou Divination says: When Tai Bai appears across the sky, people throughout the land will mourn and weep; the nine provinces will be in turmoil, with everyone rising up to take up arms and carrying provisions. The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Book of Differentiation of the Mail says: When the ministers carry out poisonous policies, and all those who seek favors and connections direct their ambitions toward the supreme position, Tai Bai will appear across the sky, indicating danger for the sovereign's fate.

《荊州占》曰：“太白再經天，一入中宮，天下更王，國破主絕，期不出三年。”（案班固《天文志》曰：秦二世即位，太白再經天，因以張楚並興，兵相跆藉，秦遂以亡。蘇林曰：跆音臺，登躡也，或作蹈。）

The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the planet Tai Bai passes through the sky twice, and one of these times enters the Central Palace and the Purple微垣, it indicates that the country will change its ruler, the state will fall, and the lineage of the monarch will be cut off. This prediction will come true within three years. (Original note: According to Ban Gu's "Han Shu · Tianwen Zhi," when the Second Emperor of Qin came to power, the planet Tai Bai passed through the sky twice, and afterwards, the forces of "Zhang Chu" and other groups rose up, their armies clashed with each other, and the Qin dynasty thus fell. Su Lin said: "Tie" is read as "Tai," meaning to tread or trample, and it can also be written as "Dao.")

《荊州占》曰：“太白晨出東方，過食時而明，有兵，期四十日；若至日中而明，兵起將行，期三月。”《荊州占》曰：“太白晨出東方而中乃明，亡地之君在東方；若東北方，期六十日。”又占曰：“太白見東方，上至午，將奪君。”又曰：“陽國王當位者受之。”又占曰：“太白見東方，至丙巳之間，小將死；過午，有起霸者。”

The book Zhongzhou Zhuan says: When the star Tai Bai appears in the east in the early morning and remains bright after breakfast, it indicates military conflict, and the event will occur within forty days; if it is still bright at noon, it indicates that generals will go to war, and the event will occur within three months. Zhongzhou Zhuan also says: When Tai Bai appears in the east in the early morning and becomes bright until the Star of Intelligence, it indicates that a king who has lost his territory is located in the east; or if it appears in the northeast, the event will occur within sixty days. Another divination says: When Tai Bai appears in the east and moves upward to the position of Wu, it indicates that a general will seize the throne. It also says: This calamity should be borne by the king who is in the proper position in the country of the Yang direction. Another divination says: When Tai Bai appears in the east and moves to between the position of Bing and Si, it indicates the death of a subordinate general; if it passes the position of Wu, then a hegemon will rise.

《荊州占》曰：“太白出，高至巳午之間；士卒勞，有不利軍者，難以得功也。”又占曰：“太白出西方，上至未，陰國有霸者；若過未及午，陰國王令天下；一曰至午者，陰國王者，當其位者受之。”陳卓曰：“太白從西方，若東方，上至午，皆為有兵。”《荊州占》曰：“太白上至午未間，天下易王，陽國兵強，當其位者受之。”又占曰：“太白始出辰巳間，為荊楚，正巳殺大將；出午，天下有亡國；出午未間，天下亡王者昌。”

Another divination says: When the bright star appears in the west and rises to the Wei position, it signifies that a hegemon will emerge from the Yin region; if it crosses the Wei position and reaches the Wu position, the king of the Yin region will command the world. Another account says that if it reaches the Wu position, the Yin region will have a king, who will be properly positioned. Chen Zhuo says: When the bright star rises from the west or the east to the Wu position, it indicates military affairs. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: When the bright star rises between the Wu and Wei positions, it indicates a change of kings throughout the world, with the Yang region's military strength being strong, and the proper person will inherit the position. Another divination says: When the bright star first appears between the Chen and Si positions, it refers to the Jiangchu region; if it is properly positioned at the Si position, it will kill a general; if it appears at the Wu position, there will be the fall of a country; if it appears between the Wu and Wei positions, although there will be the fall of a country, the person who rises to become king will be prosperous.

《荊州占》曰：“太白晝見，與日爭光，是謂經天，大亂十年，人民流亡，去其鄉；女主昌，執政；近日國，必有喪；日中而見，事必然。”司馬彪《天文志》曰：“太白晝見經天，為兵喪，在大人。”（案檀道鸞《晉陽秋》曰：孝武太元三年九月，太白晝見在角，五年九月癸未，皇后王氏崩，十二年六月癸卯，太白晝見經天在柳，十月庚午，太白晝見在斗，十三年正月、內左將軍康樂公謝玄薨，十四年妖賊鄧黎稱號皇丘，劉牢之滅之。）

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Tai Bai is visible during the day and crosses the sky, this is called "jing tian," which signifies a great turmoil lasting ten years, with people wandering and leaving their homes; the female ruler will flourish and take control of the government; the country located near the direction ruled by the sun will certainly experience mourning; if it is seen at noon, the event will certainly come to pass. *Sima Biao's* *Continued Book of Han: Records of Celestial Phenomena* says: When Tai Bai is visible during the day and crosses the sky, it presages military calamities and mourning, and the disaster will affect great figures. (Original notes: According to *Tan Daoluan's* *Jingyang Chou*, in the third year of Taowu of Emperor Xiaowu of Jin, September, Tai Bai was visible during the day in the Horn mansion; in the ninth month of the fifth year of Taowu, on the Guiwei day, the queen consort Wang died. In the sixth month of the twelfth year of Taowu, on the Guimao day, Tai Bai was visible during the day and crossed the sky, located in the Willow mansion; on the Gengwu day in October, Tai Bai was visible during the day in the Dipper mansion; in January of the thirteenth year, General Kangle Gong Xie Xuan died; in the fourteenth year, the bandit Deng Li usurped the title of king in Huangqiu and was defeated by Liu Laozi.)

甘氏曰：“太白晝見，天子有喪，天下更王，大亂，是謂經天，有亡國，百姓皆流亡。”（案司馬彪《天文志》曰：孝安永初元年六月辛丑，太白晝見，經天，延光元年三月癸巳、鄧太后崩，孝順永和五年四月戊午，太白晝見，其六年，大將軍梁商薨。九江丹陽賊周生馬勉等起兵，攻沒郡縣，梁氏又專權於漢廷，孝順漢安二年正月巳亥，太白晝見，七月甲申太白晝見，明年順帝崩，孝沖即位，明年正月又崩，韋昭《洞紀》曰：桓帝元嘉元年二月，太白晝見，永興元年二月，太白晝見，其年夏月，河水溫，漂殺人，百姓飢窮，流移道路，數十萬戶。《宋書天文志》曰：魏黃初四年六月甲申，太白晝見，五年十月乙卯。太白又晝見，時孫權受魏爵號，而稱兵拒守，七年五月，文帝崩，八月，吳國江夏，冠襄陽，魏江夏太守，文聘固守得全，將軍司馬懿救襄陽，斬吳將張霸。晉惠永康元年三月，太白晝見，占曰：為不臣。晉孝武太元七年十一月，太白晝見在斗中，八年四月甲子，太白又晝見在參，九年六月，皇太后褚氏崩也。）

Gan De, a star diviner from the Warring States period, said: "Taibai" refers to the planet Venus, which belongs to the Metal element in the Five Phases. In celestial phenomena, it presages war and punishment. When seen in the east in the morning, it is called "Qiming," and when seen in the west in the evening, it is called "Changgeng." Normally, during the day, the sunlight is so bright that stars should not be visible, but Venus appears in the daytime, which is a sign that the emperor will have a death, the country will change its ruler, and great chaos will occur. This celestial phenomenon is called "Jing Tian," indicating a country's downfall and the people will be displaced and flee. Wei Zhao's "Dong Ji" said: In the second year of Yuanjia of Emperor Huan Di, Venus appeared in the daytime; in the first year of Yongxing, Venus appeared again in the daytime, and that summer the Yellow River water became hot, drowning people, and the people were hungry and poor, with hundreds of thousands of households fleeing on the roads. The "Book of Song: Records of Astronomy" said: In the sixth month of the fourth year of Huangchu of the Cao Wei dynasty, on the day of Jia Shen, Venus appeared in the daytime; in the tenth month of the fifth year of the same year, Venus appeared again in the daytime. At that time, Sun Quan had already accepted the title and rank granted by the Wei dynasty, but he raised an army to resist. In the fifth month of the seventh year, Emperor Wen of Wei died; in the eighth month, Wu attacked Jiangxia and invaded Xiangyang. The governor of Jiangxia, Wen Cheng, defended the city and preserved it. General Sima Yi came to relieve Xiangyang and killed Wu general Zhang Ba. In the third month of the first year of Yongkang of Emperor Jin Hui Di, Venus appeared in the daytime. The divination said this was an omen of ministers not following their duties. In the seventh year of Taoyuan of Emperor Jin Xiaowu Di, in November, Venus appeared in the Dou mansion; in the fourth month of the eighth year, on the day of Jiazi, Venus appeared again in the Shen mansion; in the sixth month of the ninth year, the Empress Dowager Chu died.)

《荊州占》曰：“太白晝見，名曰昭明，強國弱，弱國霸，兵大起，期不出年。”（案《宋書天文志》曰：晉孝武太元七年十一月，太白晝見在斗，八年四月甲子太白又晝見在參，是月，桓沖徵沔漠，楊亮伐蜀，並拔城略地，八月苻堅自將兵，號百萬，九月攻沒壽陽，十月劉牢之破堅將梁成，斬之，殺獲萬餘人，謝玄等又破堅於肥水，斬其弟融，堅大眾奔潰，九年八月，謝玄出屯彭城，經略中州，十年八月，苻堅為其將姚萇所殺，十一年二月戊申，太白又晝見在東井，十二年慕容垂冠東阿，翟遼冠河上，姚萇假號安定，苻登自立隴上，呂光竊據涼，十二年十月庚午，太白晝見，又在斗，自是慕容垂，翟遼，姚萇，苻登，慕容永並阻兵爭強，十四年正月，彭城妖賊又稱號於皇丘，劉牢之攻破，滅之，三月張道破合鄉，圍太山，向欽之擊走之，是年翟遼又攻榮陽、侵略陳項，於時政事多弊、治道陵遲也。）

(Original commentary: According to the "Song Shu · Astronomical Records," in the seventh year of Emperor Xiaowu of the Jin Dynasty's Taoyuan era, November, Venus appeared in the daytime in the Dipper mansion; on the fourth month of the eighth year, on the day of Jiazi, Venus again appeared in the daytime in the Three Stars mansion. In that same month, Huan Chong led his troops to the Miaoshui area, and Yang Liang launched an attack on Shu, both capturing cities and seizing land. In August, Fu Jian personally led his army, claiming a force of a million; in September, he captured Shouyang; in October, Liu Laozi defeated Fu Jian's general Liang Cheng and killed him, killing and capturing over ten thousand people; Xie Xuan and others then defeated Fu Jian at the Bishui River, killing Fu Jian's brother Fu Rong, and Fu Jian's army scattered and fled. Wu Xian said: When Venus has a small star accompanying it, and the distance between them is a few inches to a foot, the period is eight days, and the border cities will have military achievements. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Venus is red in color, small in size, and shaking, it indicates military actions across the country, the great generals lose their territories and submit to others, and then military actions will arise. Wu Xian said: When Venus appears in the west in the evening, and on the fourth day of the eighth month, if there is a small star accompanying it, and the distance between them is more than a foot to two feet, the armies of both sides will suffer a great defeat, and generals will die in battle; when the army is outside, if Venus has a small star accompanying it, and the distance between them is a foot, the army will disband and cease fighting.

郗萌曰：“太白流，國有兵將死。”石氏曰：“太白動搖，進退左右，用兵吉，靜凶。太白圍，以靜用兵，靜吉；躁凶。”《荊州占》曰：“太白大而角，搖居不安，東西南北，乍上乍下，如欲驚者，其年有喪，大小必至。”郗萌曰：“太白與宿星斗，不出一年，有失國之君；將失位。”《荊州占》曰：“太白與列星斗，兵弱，為客有利。”

The "Jingzhou Divination" said: When Venus is large and has a sharp edge, shaking and moving east and west, south and north, up and down, as if startled, it indicates there will be mourning in the same year, regardless of whether it is a major or minor mourning, it will certainly occur. Xi Meng said: When Venus conflicts with the stars of the Twenty-Eight Mansions, the ruler will lose territory within a year, and generals will also lose their positions. The "Jingzhou Divination" said: When Venus conflicts with the stars of the constellations, it indicates that the native forces are weak, and it is advantageous for the opposing forces.

Xi Meng says: When Venus produces a comet-like cloud in the southwest direction, it indicates that the people of the Central Plains will suffer military disasters and lose land, and this will be fulfilled within two years. Shi Shen says: When Venus produces a broom-like cloud in the northwest direction, it indicates that the Hu and Di people will suffer military disasters, and within one year they will lose land. Shi Shen also says: When Venus produces a broom-like cloud in the southwest direction, it indicates that the people of the Central Plains will suffer many military disasters and lose land, and this will be fulfilled within one year.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When Venus stays at the right star of the Horn mansion, it indicates that the five grains will not mature and there will be a great flood that year.

石氏曰：“守左角上，臣陵其主；守左角下，奴婢大賤。太白守左角上一尺，邊境不寧；二尺，憂，百姓亡其俗；一曰七寸，國危亡也。太白守左角下，芒成，民不民，主不主。太白守左角，芒不成，兵不用；芒成，所向無前。太白守左角，去復還，臣欲為亂。太白守左角，為填星所干，國有忠將。”又曰：“太白守左角，為歲星所干，福德。”又曰：“太白守左角，為辰星所干，龍下淵池。”又曰：“太白守左角，為天狗所干，六畜蕃息。”石氏曰：“太白守左角，為枉矢所干，四夷有弓矢事。”
