Moon halo over the well, one instance.

The Sea of Heaven Divination says: When the moon's halo surrounds the East Well, it indicates that the Hu people will raise an army. (The East Well refers to the eight stars of the Well mansion, which resembles a well, governing water balance and laws, and its territory corresponds to the state of Qin.) Xi Meng says: When the moon's halo surrounds the East Well, it indicates that there will be military affairs throughout the country. Xi Meng also says: When the moon's halo surrounds the East Well, it indicates that the king will go on a tour, and there will be a great drought the following year; he also says that on the Bingchen day of the sixth month there will be a great amnesty. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the moon's halo surrounds the East Well, it indicates that yin and yang are out of balance; it also says that when the moon's halo surrounds the East Well, it indicates that the four directions of the barbarians will seek peace. Xi Meng says: When the moon produces a halo on the壬 day or癸 day of the twelfth month, it indicates a great amnesty. (The original text mistakenly writes '晏' instead of '晕'.) The Wu Xian Divination says: When the moon's halo surrounds the East Well in the third month, it indicates a great flood.

Moon Halo and Ghost Two

The Shi school says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Ghost Mansion, it indicates that the price of millet will rise threefold. (The four stars of the Ghost Mansion are also called the Ghost Mansion, and the central white cloud-like mass is called "Accumulated Corpse Cloud," which presages matters concerning sacrifices and death and mourning.) The Gan school says: When the moon produces a halo three times in summer and it covers the Ghost Mansion, it indicates heavy rain and the failure of the five grains to mature. Xi Meng says: When the moon produces a halo covering the Ghost Mansion in the first ten days of the first lunar month, it indicates an amnesty, which will occur within thirty days. The "Sea of Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Ghost Mansion, it indicates a great drought. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Ghost Mansion, it indicates two armies facing each other without engaging in battle. Xi Meng says: When the moon produces a halo covering the Ghost Mansion twice in a single month, it indicates many deaths. Xi Meng also says: When the moon produces a halo covering the Ghost Mansion over the course of three summer months, one interpretation says it indicates a great fog; another says it indicates a great hailstorm and heavy frost; another says it indicates a great snowfall; another says it indicates heavy rain and floods; another says it indicates a great plague; another says it indicates a great fire. It also says that producing a halo twice indicates small water-related disasters, and producing a halo once indicates cold weather.

Xi Meng said: When the moon produces a halo covering Ghost Mansion once in the month of summer, it indicates cold weather; twice, it indicates small floods; three times, it indicates large floods. Xi Meng said: When the moon produces a halo covering Ghost Mansion in the fourth, seventh, and tenth months, if the air from the halo moves eastward, it indicates many elderly men will die; if it moves southward, it indicates many middle-aged men will die; if it moves westward, it indicates many elderly women will die; if it moves disorderly without following a direction, it indicates many young people will die; the time of occurrence is generally within ninety days. (The last sentence's 'non-direction' should be 'northward' and 'period' should be 'time'.)

Moon Halo over Willow Tree Three

The Shi school says: When the moon's halo covers the Willow Mansion, it indicates that in autumn the grass and trees will be stagnant and unsmooth, or there may be warfare. (The Willow Mansion consists of eight stars, which is the mouth of the Vermilion Bird, also known as 'Zhu', and it governs the heavenly kitchen and food matters.) The Wu Xian Divination says: When the moon's halo covers the Willow Mansion, there will be an amnesty within three days, and a high official will die; the two armies will not fight, but there will be floods, and the people will migrate.

Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Willow Mansion, there will be cases of punishment and litigation; or there may be drought in the corresponding region, leading to many people dying from illness. He also said that when the moon is surrounded by a halo over the 'Zhu' star, there will be calamity in that area, with many deaths during the year, and the elderly and children will weep on the roads. Or there may be a large number of insects dying. He also said that grain prices will rise sharply, leading to people eating each other. He also said that when the halo surrounds the 'Zhu' star, within thirty days there will be armies fighting in the open surrounding the city. The original text notes that 'Zhu' is another name for the Willow Mansion. The "Wu Xian Zhuan" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Willow Mansion, there will be armies fighting in the open. Xi Meng said: When the moon produces a halo over the Willow Mansion in the first month or the tenth month, it indicates a pardon, and the event will occur within thirty days.

Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Seven Stars mansion, it indicates there will be cases of punishment and litigation, calamity in the place where it occurs, or drought. Another interpretation suggests there will be battles between light cavalry units. (The Seven Stars refer to the Seven Stars of the Vermilion Bird, which governs sudden military actions and bandits.) The "Yellow River Chart: Emperor's Enjoyment of the Marvelous" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Seven Stars, it indicates battles between lightly armed soldiers or the mass death of flying insects. (Zhang Xu consists of six stars, which are the crop of the Vermilion Bird, governing treasures, ancestral temples, and the Star of livelihood's food supplies.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: When the moon is eclipsed by a halo covering Zhang Xu, it indicates the death of flying birds; another interpretation suggests the disappearance of sea birds. Xi Meng said: When the moon halo covers and invades Yi Xu, it indicates that the female ruler will encounter misfortune. (Yi Xu consists of twenty-two stars, which are the wings of the Vermilion Bird, governing music officials, performers, and distant guests.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the moon halo covers Yi Xu, it indicates that soldiers will flee in large numbers; another interpretation says that soldiers will gather in great numbers. Chen Zhuo said: When the moon halo covers Yi Xu, it indicates that soldiers will become great bandits; another interpretation says that soldiers will defeat great bandits; yet another says that it only indicates soldiers' victory; another says that there will be an amnesty in spring; and yet another says that the general will be wounded.

The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Wings mansion, it indicates that war will break out, and the weapons in the military storehouse will be taken out and distributed; another interpretation says that if there are already armies, they will disband. The "Wu Xian Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Wings mansion, it indicates a great battle, and the common people will abandon their homes. Xi Meng said: When the moon produces a halo over the Wings mansion in the second month, there will be amnesty by the fifth month; it also says that when the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Wings mansion, there will be incidents of vehicles and horses rushing about and crowds fleeing, and many prominent people will rebel.

The Spring and Autumn Writings of the Examination of the Mail say: When the moon is enveloped by a halo covering the Chariot Mansion, it indicates that the feudal lords will cease warfare. (The Chariot Mansion consists of four stars, which are the tail of the Vermilion Bird, governing chariots and wind, and its territory corresponds to the land of Chu.) The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the moon is enveloped by a halo covering the Chariot Mansion, it indicates that the Grand General will die in battle; another interpretation says that the commander-in-chief will suffer loss; yet another says that warfare will cease and there will be no more military forces. Xi Meng says: When the moon is enveloped by a halo covering the Chariot Mansion, it indicates that war will be initiated, and the party that takes the initiative will not win; or there will be a great wind that harms the harvest. Chen Zhuo says: When the moon is enveloped by a halo covering the Chariot Mansion, it indicates that there will be slight drought in that year. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the moon produces a halo covering the Chariot Mansion three times in a single month, it indicates that all the carriages and horses in the world will be mobilized, yet the armories will have no carriages to hang and the stables will have no horses to tie; when a halo covers the Chariot Mansion, it indicates that there will be edicts of virtuous governance; if the halo occurs in the twelfth lunar month, it indicates that the treasuries will have no idle carriages and the stables will have no tied horses; another interpretation says that if there are already armies, they will cease warfare.

Moon Divination of the Six Elements

A lunar halo is one of the astronomical phenomena recorded by the Shi school.

Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the star of the Ascendant, and the Great Angle star is also within the halo, it indicates that warfare will spread throughout the land and be uncontrollable, the feudal lords will divide their power, and the world will be in great disorder. If there is someone within the country who rises in arms to contest the throne, this is the time for the issuance of an amnesty. (This section is based on the transmission of the Shi school concerning the 'Middle Officials,' which refers to the three enclosures of the Purple Micro, Tai Wei, and Tian Shi, as well as the area around the Big Dipper surrounding the North Pole, in contrast to the 'Outer Officials' outside the Twenty-Eight Mansions. The six stars of the Ascendant are located between the two sides of the Great Angle, indicating the beginning of the year; the Great Angle is located north of the Horn Mansion, representing the throne of the heavenly king.) The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Great Angle, it indicates that the relatives of the king, dukes, and marquises will face mourning. Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Great Angle, it indicates the loss of territory by the country. Xi Meng said: When the moon produces a halo three times in the first month, covering the 'Tian Ping,' it indicates a great amnesty; another interpretation suggests a great defeat and numerous bandits. (Original book note: Tian Ping is another name for the star of the Chain.) The "Shi School Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Vega star, it indicates warfare spreading throughout the land. The "Xi Meng Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Tian Shi Enclosure, it indicates military affairs.

Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering Tianjin Star, it indicates the death of a great general, failure of the five grains to mature, and the migration of people over a thousand miles, with cattle and horses suffering a great plague. (Tianjin is nine stars spanning the Milky Way, serving as a bridge for crossing water, hence its name; when a halo surrounds it, it often relates to water affairs and roads.) The "Jingzhou Divination" said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering Tianjin, it indicates the appearance of a dragon. Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the Tianjin end, within twenty days, the whole country will have a general amnesty. Xi Meng said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering Tianjin, it indicates the presence of a rebellious minister who alters the emperor's laws. The "Jingzhou Divination" said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering Tianjin, it indicates great chaos throughout the country leading to its downfall. Chen Zhuo said: When the moon is surrounded by a halo covering the three stars of He Gu, it indicates a general's campaign, but the commander fails in his calculations. The "Jingzhou Divination" said: When the moon produces a halo surrounding the front foot of Da Ling Star, it indicates the pardon of death sentences; surrounding the back foot, it indicates the pardon of lesser crimes.

Xi Meng said: When the moon's halo surrounds the Five Star Carriage, it indicates that the female ruler of the corresponding territory will suffer misfortune. (The Five Star Carriage is located north of Bi Host, and it represents the carriages of the Five Emperors, as well as the abundance or scarcity of grain and the use of military chariots.) The Shi school said: When the moon's halo surrounds the Five Star Carriage, if it encircles one star, it indicates the remission of minor crimes; if it encircles two, three, or four stars, it indicates the remission of crimes of the next level; if it encircles all five stars, it indicates the remission of capital punishment. If the moon's halo also surrounds Bi Host, Hairy Head Mansion, and the Great Tomb Star at the same time, there will certainly be a great amnesty. The Wu Xian Divination says: When the moon's halo surrounds the Five Star Carriage, if the halo produces one column of gas, it indicates a small-scale military deployment to relieve the situation; if two columns are produced, it indicates half the army being deployed; if three columns are produced, it indicates the entire army being deployed. If the army is already outside the country, and the halo produces one column, it indicates a small-scale withdrawal of troops; if two columns are produced, it indicates half the army withdrawing; if three columns are produced, it indicates the entire army returning.

Xi Meng said: If the moon's halo surrounds the five chariots but does not touch the Tian Yu star among them, there will be no pardon; he also said that if the moon produces a halo in the first month surrounding the five chariots and encircles all five stars, it indicates a decree of virtue; if it happens in the fourth, seventh, or tenth month, there will be flooding and continuous rain for fifty days; if it happens in the eleventh month, there will be high grain prices. He also said that if the moon produces a halo in the twelfth month surrounding the five chariots, the event will occur in the fourth month, indicating a decree of virtue. Xi Meng also said: If the moon produces a halo three times a year surrounding Tian Guan star, there will be a pardon in that year; he also said that if the moon's halo surrounds Tian Guan, there will be a great mourning within six months, and one can determine which state it will occur in by the stem-branch of the day the halo appears; if the halo surrounds Tian Guan, it indicates many people will suffer from illness. (Original note: Tian Guan is another name for Nan He and Bei He.)

The book Jingzhou Zhan says: When the moon passes through and stays at the heavenly gate, three layers of halos appear, with the halo color being green, indicating blockage of passes and bridges. The book Dili Xian says: When the moon's halo covers the戍 stars of the southern river and northern river, and there is cloud crossing the halo, the side that first sends troops will win. (The southern river and northern river each have three stars, located north and south of the well mansion, like the heavenly gate, guarding the passage for the sun, moon, and five planets.) Xi Meng says: When the moon's halo covers the戍 stars of the southern river and northern river, there will be earth and wood construction work. The book Huangdi Zhan says: When the moon's halo covers the Xuanyan star, there will be the death of a woman. (The Xuanyan star consists of seventeen stars located north of the seven-star mansion, shaped like a soaring dragon, representing the image of the queen consort.) The book Jingzhou Zhan says: When the moon's halo covers the Xuanyan star, within the same month, there will be visitors arriving. Jing Fang says: On the night of Gengzi day, when the moon's halo covers the Xuanyan star, by the following Jiazi day there will be a great amnesty. Xi Meng says: When the moon's halo surrounds the Xuanyan star, within fifty days, the whole country will have a minor amnesty.

The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the celestial court, it indicates the emperor will mobilize troops for self-defense. The "Wuxian Divination" says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Taiwei region, it indicates the emperor will mobilize troops for self-defense, but not involving the general's forces; it also says that if the halo appears once, twice, or three times over the Taiwei region, it indicates the sovereign will personally guard the court. (The Taiwei region is located north of the wings and zhen stars, representing the southern palace court of the emperor, with the palaces of twelve feudal states; the Ziwēi region is located at the north celestial pole, representing the dwelling of the heavenly emperor.) Xi Meng says: When the moon forms a halo three times over the Ziwēi region, it indicates a general pardon. The Shi school says: When the moon is surrounded by a halo over the Taiwei palace, it indicates the emperor will mobilize troops for self-defense; if the halo appears three times, it indicates the emperor will personally lead the military campaign. The Gan school says: When the moon forms a halo three times around the Taiwei region within a month, it indicates the sovereign star will command the king to mobilize troops, with military strategies being planned in the field; another interpretation indicates the emperor is in danger of loss, and a great pardon is needed to resolve it. The Jingfang Divination says: When the moon forms a halo over the Taiwei region on a Gengzi day, there will be a pardon by the following Jiazi day. Xi Meng says: When the moon forms a halo over the Yellow Emperor's seat, it indicates a pardon. Xi Meng also says: When the moon forms a halo over the Wenwang region, it indicates a pardon. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon forms a halo three times over the Tianlao star in the first lunar month, it indicates a great pardon.

The Wu Xian Divination says: If the moon halo forms a ring and extends continuously to the Big Dipper, it indicates great chaos in the country, state calamities, and people migrating thousands of miles; otherwise, there will be cases of people fleeing and dispersing, cities being attacked and captured, and territories changing hands. The fulfillment of these omens will not be beyond two years. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the moon halo covers the Big Dipper, it indicates state calamities, refugees fleeing thousands of miles, high grain prices, and gathering of troops. If the halo appears on Jia or Yi days, the fulfillment will be in 120 days; on Bing or Ding days, in 80 days; on Wu or Ji days, in 60 days; on Geng or Xin days, in 40 days; and on Ren or Gui days, in 20 days, and these will all come to pass. Another interpretation suggests great military movements and territorial expansion; yet another suggests widespread fires and great military movements across the land.

The Xi Meng commentary states: When the moon's halo surrounds the Big Dipper, forming two overlapping rings like a chain, there will be the execution of a high-ranking official within three years; it also says that when the moon's halo surrounds the Big Dipper, it indicates a major death in the royal family, followed by a general amnesty. (Original note: On November 17th of the fourth year of the Yellow Initial era under Emperor Wen of Wei, such an astronomical phenomenon occurred. By May of the seventh year of the Yellow Initial era, Emperor Wen died, and Emperor Ming took the throne, leading to a general amnesty.) Chen Zhuo says: When the moon's halo surrounds the Big Dipper, Taiwei, and Dajiao, each area surrounding a single star, it indicates major military movements and chaos across the country; otherwise, it signifies a great flood entering the city and harming the people, with the event occurring within thirty days. The Xia school says: When the halo forms a chain-like shape, with multiple layers of halo surrounding the first and second stars of the Big Dipper's handle, it indicates that high-ranking officials will be imprisoned, exiled, or relocated more than two thousand li away; it also says that when the halo surrounds the auxiliary star, it indicates that high-ranking officials will be imprisoned. The Shi school says: When the moon's halo is only one layer, and the lower part is incomplete, unable to close, while the upper part has a crown-like and a cap-like appearance, with two ear-like clouds on both sides, the white halo connects to form a ring, passing through the two ears and connecting to the Big Dipper, it indicates that the country will face major military conflicts, large-scale bloody battles, and the loss of territory in that region, with the event occurring within one year.

The moon's halo is observed by the Shi school's outer officials.

The Shi school says: When the moon's halo covers Ping Star, it indicates misfortune. (This section refers to the 'Outer Officials' transmitted by Shi Shen's school, which are star officials located outside the Twenty-Eight Mansions and spread across the four directions. The two Ping Stars are located to the north of Kulu, and they are associated with the administration of justice.) The Shi school also says: When the moon's halo covers Yu Star, it indicates misfortune and death. The Shi school says: When the moon's halo covers the Nine Times Stars, it indicates misfortune. Xi Meng says: When the moon produces a halo in April, July, or October and covers Huo Shi Star, it indicates military action. (The nine stars of Huo Shi are located to the southeast of the Wolf Star, forming the shape of a bow and arrow, pointing directly at Tian Wang, and they are associated with guarding against thieves.) The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon's halo covers Tian Lang Star, it indicates that dogs will die in large numbers.

Moon halo according to the Gan school, central official three

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon stays at the heavenly gate, three layers of halos appear, with the halo color being green, indicating obstruction of passes and bridges. (This section refers to the astronomical constellations transmitted by Gan De's school.) Xi Meng says: When the moon's halo covers the star Tian Gao, within six months there will certainly be a great mourning, and the day the halo appears can be used with the heavenly stem and earthly branch to determine which state it will affect. The Shi school says: When the moon's halo covers the moon star, within four years there will be calamity, which is a disaster within the palace and secret plots. Xi Meng says: When the moon's halo covers the star Tian Jie, it indicates obstruction of passes and bridges. (The two stars Tian Jie are located between Bi Xu and Mao Xu, serving as the boundary between the Hu and Chinese regions, thus governing the passage of bridges and roads.)

The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When the moon produces a halo and has two ear-like clouds on either side, it indicates peace throughout the year. (This passage lists various forms of clouds around the moon: "ear-like clouds" resemble ears attached to the moon; "hat-like clouds" resemble a hat covering the moon; "headgear-like clouds" resemble an object placed on top of the moon; "embrace-like clouds" resemble hands encircling the moon; "back-like clouds" resemble a curved cloud facing away from the moon; "ring-like clouds" are also written as "jue" and resemble a broken jade ring; "straight clouds" resemble a vertical column of cloud; "rainbow" and "nai" are curved colored clouds resembling bridges, with "rainbow" being the male and "nai" the female.) The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When the moon produces a halo and has two ear-like clouds, it indicates that the side which first launches an army will have good fortune. The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When there are clouds around the moon and the halo cannot close, with four back-like ring-like clouds surrounding the outside, it indicates that plots from the outside will not succeed. The Gan school says: When there are rainbows, back-like clouds, and nai clouds appearing together with the halo of the moon, it indicates an event occurring after 180 days. The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When the moon produces a halo and there is a nai cloud cloud blocking it, if an army attacks in the direction of the nai cloud, it will achieve a great victory. The Shi school says: When the moon produces a halo without any brightness, and the halo is mixed with red and dark red colors along with rainbows, nai clouds, back-like clouds, and ring-like clouds, this is called "great turmoil," indicating that warfare and funerals will occur together, and the king should use amnesty to eliminate this.

The book "Gaozong's Divination" says: When the moon develops a halo, and there is cloud covering it, it indicates enemy troops invading the country. The ruler of the country corresponding to the star position where the moon is located will die. "Dilangxi" says: When the moon develops a halo, and there is cloud passing through the halo, it indicates the death of officials close to the ruler. Jingfang's "Yi Transmission" says: When the moon develops a halo, and there is cloud passing through the halo, within a year, the country corresponding to the star position where the moon is located will have calamity. "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon develops a halo, and there is cloud crossing through it, it indicates that the side which first launches an attack will win. "Dilangxi" says: When the moon develops a halo, and there is thick cloud like a heavy cloth, with four paths passing through the halo and reaching the moon, within the same year, the ruler of the defending side will have worries. "Dilangxi" says: When the moon develops a halo, and there is thick cloud like a heavy cloth, either three or four paths passing through the halo and reaching the moon, in battle it is advisable not to attack directly, for the side that attacks directly will surely lose.

The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When the moon develops a halo, if there is red cloud vapor thick and large like a wooden mallet, it indicates that there are armies outside, and over ten thousand soldiers will die under the direction of this cloud vapor. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon develops a halo, if there is white cloud vapor emerging from the halo, stretching east and west across the sky, it indicates that the people will be rewarded. The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When the moon develops a halo, if there is white cloud vapor thick and large like a wooden mallet, stretching across the moon, one end touching the moon, then the region corresponding to the direction the moon is facing will not survive this year, and the queen consort of the country's ruler will die. The "High Emperor Divination" says: When the moon develops a halo, if there is a large amount of white vapor invading from outside the halo towards the center, it indicates that if an attack is launched, the city will be captured and the enemy's general will be captured alive; if there is a large amount of white vapor emerging from the halo outward, it indicates that the defending side will win. The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: When the moon develops a halo, if there is white vapor about two or three feet wide touching the moon, appearing in the east, it is called "Infant," indicating that the side attacking another's territory will suffer losses to its own army.

Chen Zhuo said: When the moon produces a halo, if there are clouds passing through the halo and winding around the moon, there will be mourning in the country corresponding to the direction the moon is facing within this year. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon produces a halo, if there is a white cloud and two black clouds like cloth blocking the halo, it indicates that a city will be captured and the general of the city will die in battle. The "Di Lan Xi" says: When the moon produces a halo, if there is a green cloud like a spear pointing directly at the moon, this is called "zhehai", indicating the sovereign will suffer calamity, and this year the five grains will not be ripe. If there is a red cloud piercing the moon, this is called "chouzhe"; if there is a yellow cloud surrounding the moon, it indicates that a female ruler will be killed, and the prediction will come true within forty days. If there is a white cloud piercing the moon, it indicates that the king of the country will be attacked by bandits; if there is a black cloud passing through the moon, sometimes one, sometimes two, sometimes three, it is called "heng", and the country corresponding to the cloud's direction will have the king or general die.

When a moon halo appears, there are shooting stars entering and exiting within the moon halo, five times.

The *Jingzhou Zhuan* says: If the moon produces a halo and a shooting star emerges from the halo, it indicates that a prominent person from the corresponding territory will flee or escape. If a shooting star enters the halo, it signifies that an envoy will arrive from another country. The *Dili Xiyi* says: If the moon produces a halo and a shooting star crosses the moon's body and passes through the halo, it foretells disaster for a prince or the queen. It also says that if a shooting star passes through the halo but does not directly strike the moon's body, and emerges from the right side of the moon, resembling a large drum, it indicates the death of officials on the right side. If it emerges from the left side, it indicates the death of officials on the left side.

The "Imperial Inspection of Pleasures" says: When the sky is clear with no clouds and a shooting star passes by the moon from below or above, it indicates that the region corresponding to that area will experience joy and celebration; another interpretation suggests it may indicate military action. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon develops a halo, and a shooting star flies out from the halo, if the star is dark blue, it indicates that the country will face troubles; if it is red, it suggests the city will be captured; if it is yellow, it indicates the country will expand its territory; if it is white, it suggests that the next year's crops will be abundant; if it is black, it indicates the army will suffer defeat. The "Imperial Inspection of Pleasures" also says: When the moon develops a halo and a star flies out from the halo, it indicates that a person of high status will flee or escape; if a star flies into the halo from outside, it indicates that a minister will come to the country to submit.

A lunar halo indicates the presence of a guest star, which is the sixth type.

The "Imperial Inspection of Joy" says: When the moon develops a halo and there is a guest star within it, it indicates that the country corresponding to the constellation where the guest star is located will experience calamity. (The term "guest star" refers to a star that does not normally exist but suddenly appears and disappears after some time, such as a nova or a comet, because it is like a guest temporarily staying there.) The "Shi School Divination" says: When the moon's halo covers a guest star, if the guest star is to the north of the moon, it indicates that the northern country will win; if the guest star is to the south of the moon, it indicates that the southern country will win. (Original book note: other directions can be inferred similarly.)

Moon Divination by Seven

Wait for the moon to be eclipsed once.

Jing Fang said: On the third day after the new moon, if there is no distinction between the bright and dark parts, an eclipse of the moon will certainly occur this month. (The term 'hou' means to predict or verify in advance; this passage discusses how to predict an eclipse of the moon from lunar phenomena.) Jing Fang's "Yi Fei Hou" said: If a halo appears on the sixth day of the first month, it indicates an eclipse of the moon in that month; if a halo appears on the seventh day of the second month, it indicates an eclipse of the moon in that month; if a halo appears on the eighth day of the third month, it indicates an eclipse of the moon in that month. The "Yi Wei Meng Qi Shu" said: The method to predict a total lunar eclipse is to observe the moon's reflection in water. If the moon's reflection cannot be seen in the water, it indicates a total lunar eclipse.

The moon is partially obscured.

The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: when the moon's color turns reddish yellow and loses its brightness, it is called "bo"; when the moon's body is eroded and damaged, it is called "shi". Both are ominous signs, with good and bad fortune corresponding to different regions. Jing Fang's "Commentary on the Changes" says: when the sun and moon do not obscure each other but their brightness becomes dim, it is called "bo". Meng Kang says: when the sun and moon lose their brightness, it is called "bo". The "Commentary on the Hexagrams" of the "Zhou Changes" says: when the moon is full to its extreme, it will be eroded. "Shi Ming" says: the erosion of the sun and moon is called "shi"; gradually being occupied and losing brightness, it is like insects eating the leaves of grass and trees. The "Book of Songs, Xiao Ya, October's Meeting" says: the moon's erosion is still a common occurrence; but the sun's erosion is how ominous and cannot be concealed.

Ban Gu's "Book of Han: Astronomical Records" says: Ancient people said that when the world was at peace, the five stars each followed their own course without retrograding. The sun did not eclipse on the new moon day, and the moon did not eclipse on the full moon day. Wang Chong's "Discourses on Weights and Measures" says: If a ruler has the beginning of supreme virtue, the sun and moon will not show anomalies on the new moon or full moon days. (Original note: The term "anomalies" refers to solar and lunar eclipses.) The "Jing Shi Zhan" says: When the moon and sun are directly opposite each other, each occupying half the heavens, they both follow the Yellow Path. At noon, the golden bird of the sun and the jade rabbit of the moon face each other from afar. At this time, the moon's light is at its peak and its power is at its height. The fullness has reached its limit, and the principle of waxing and waning has reached its extreme. Thus, calamities of decline, danger, and ruin descend all at once. Then the sun takes away the moon's brightness, and the shadow of the earth, called "dark void," causes a loss to the moon's form. A small eclipse is only a slight defect, but when the moon is overly full, it completely disappears. This is the constant law of heaven.

The Luo Writing says: When there is an eclipse of the sun or moon, one should send troops to attack the country that corresponds to the omen; if one remains in defense and peace, then during the time of solar or lunar eclipse, one must not send troops out. In the year of a solar eclipse, one must not send troops; in the month of a lunar eclipse, one must not send troops. The Gan school says: A country without virtue, when the sun and moon pass through its territory, will experience eclipses, which is precisely the place where military force should be directed. The country will eventually collapse and perish, and there will be mourning. The Hongfan Zhuan says: When the sovereign's decrees lose order, the state affairs are not clear, ministers are confused, and the gathering of dark forces obscures the bright energy, then the sun and moon will be eclipsed; the sky becomes dark and without light, the four directions are cramped and uneasy, the rebellious energy and the jade-like energy intersect, bandits and calamities contend with each other, and weapons are all raised.

The Spring and Autumn Annals: External Transmission says: When a qilin and a dragon fight, the sun and moon will be eclipsed. (Original note: According to the Huainanzi: When a qilin fights, the sun and moon will be eclipsed.) The Yellow River Chart: The Emperor's Enjoyment says: When the moon is partially eclipsed in a particular star region, it indicates that the king of the corresponding territory will be ill. The Spring and Autumn Annals: Responsive Symbols says: When ministers are extremely arrogant and tyrannical, the sun and moon will be eclipsed on the day of the new moon. The Shi school says: When there is a lunar eclipse, there will be a major battle in the territory corresponding to the eclipse. (The original text has errors in the title and the word 'sun and moon'.) The Shi school's Divination says: When an army leaves the city and encounters a lunar eclipse, if it is in the territory corresponding to the eclipse, it indicates a great defeat; another version says that when the army first falls into a dead end and then escapes. The Shi school's Divination says: If it rains within three days after a lunar eclipse, the abnormal phenomenon will be resolved, and there is no need for further divination; another version says within seven days. (Original note: The rain or snow must be widespread and sufficient; if it is only light and scattered rain, the abnormal phenomenon will not be resolved.)

The Luo Shu Luo Zui Ji says: When the moon is entirely eclipsed, it is an ominous sign, indicating that the standards of criminal punishment have been lost. The Jingzhou Zhan says: When loyal ministers who plan strategies die due to speaking truthfully, the moon frequently wanes as a result. The Di Lan Xi says: When a lunar eclipse occurs in a particular star region, it signifies the death of a prominent person in the corresponding territory. When waging war, the side that attacks the city from the direction where the moon begins to wane can conquer the land; the same applies to solar eclipses. The Jingzhou Zhan also says: When a solar or lunar eclipse occurs in the star region of a particular country, it indicates the death of the king of that country. Additionally, during battle, attacking in the direction of the waning part of the eclipse will lead to victory. The Shangshu Wei Xing De Fang says: When pardon should be given but is not, the moon will wane as a result. Dong Zhongshu's "Dui Zaiyi" says: When officials administer punishment and fail to apply justice equally, resentment accumulates, and innocent people are wrongly affected, a lunar eclipse will occur.

The *Yellow River Chart: Imperial Survey and Enjoyment* says: When a lunar eclipse occurs in a particular star group, it indicates the death of a prominent person in the territory corresponding to that star group; it also signifies a great battle where cities will be captured. The *Comprehensive Verification of the Changes* says: A lunar eclipse is caused by the ruler acting improperly and ruling alone. If not corrected, it will bring about floods that destroy cities. (The original text repeats the phrase 'lunar eclipse' three times, which is an error.) The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When a lunar eclipse occurs, the country that has unjust punishments will suffer the calamity. Jing Fang's *Commentary on the Changes* says: A lunar eclipse indicates unjust punishments, and the country corresponding to the star group where the moon is located will bear the calamity. (The original text mistakenly writes 'Easy Fang' instead of 'Commentary on the Changes'.)

The "Imperial Inspection of Joy" says: If troops remain stationed within the country and a lunar eclipse occurs, it indicates that the country will suffer calamity; it also says that if a lunar eclipse occurs before any military action is taken, it indicates that the corresponding country will soon take up arms, but will not achieve victory. Jing Fang's "Book of Changes and Divination" says: If the moon is at the time of an eclipse and indeed appears darkened, it indicates that the way of the virtuous will grow stronger, while the way of the petty person will decline. The Xia family says: If an army goes to war during a lunar eclipse, it will result in the loss of soldiers and casualties, and there will be further losses afterwards. The "Imperial Inspection of Joy" also says: If the moon is at its full phase and then becomes eclipsed, it indicates that two armies must surely engage in battle; if there were no armies originally, they will surely mobilize, and the commander will die in the fields.

A lunar eclipse occurs in the early morning, midday, or late afternoon.

The "Imperial Inspection of Joy" says: If an eclipse of the moon occurs at the beginning of the morning, the chancellor and the crown prince should bear the calamity; if it occurs at the beginning of the evening, the sovereign should bear the calamity. (The reason why different people bear the calamity depending on whether the eclipse occurs in the early or late part of the night is because the early part of the night belongs to the sovereign, while the later part belongs to the ministers.)

The direction from which the lunar eclipse originates is the fourth direction.

The *Jingzhou Divination* states: If a lunar eclipse begins to wane from the southern side, it indicates misfortune befalls a man; if it begins from the northern side, misfortune befalls a woman; if it begins from the eastern side, misfortune befalls a young person; if it begins from the western side, misfortune befalls an old person. The *Dilang Xi* says: If a lunar eclipse occurs before the full moon and starts to wane from the upper side, continuing until the moon has no light left, it indicates the emperor will bear this calamity.

The "Imperial Amusements" says: If a lunar eclipse begins to wane from the east, it indicates there will be evil winds during the month; if it begins to wane from the west, it indicates that the originally defending main direction will instead become the distant guest direction. The "Imperial Amusements" also says: If a lunar eclipse begins to wane from above, it is called "losing the path," and the sovereign should bear the responsibility; if it begins to wane from below, it is called "losing the method," and the general should bear the responsibility; if it begins to wane from the side, it is called "losing the command," and the chancellor should bear the responsibility. It also says that if the lunar eclipse begins to wane from above, it should concern the sovereign and his relatives; if it begins to wane from below, it should concern newborn infants; if it begins to wane from the shady side, it should concern women.

The moon is eclipsed and has reached the middle, with five parts obscured.

The "Imperial Inspection of Joy" says: When the moon is entirely eclipsed, it is a sign that a female ruler will bear this calamity. ("Eclipse complete" refers to a total lunar eclipse, "half divided" means the moon is exactly half obscured.) The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon is entirely eclipsed, the region directly beneath the moon will indicate the death of the sovereign; another interpretation suggests the death of a chancellor. The "Yellow River Chart - Imperial Inspection of Joy" says: If a total lunar eclipse occurs while there are troops stationed outside, it signifies the dismissal of the commander. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: A total lunar eclipse indicates a great battle, the defeat of the army, the death of the general, the capture of cities, and the loss of territory; if the eclipse is not complete, the army may be defeated but the general will not die. Jing Fang's "Omen Divination" says: If a lunar eclipse occurs on the fifteenth day and is total, it is called "ruin and loss," indicating the death of the sovereign of the country or a flood disaster. Jing Fang's "Yi Flying Observation" says: A total lunar eclipse signifies the downfall of a state; if the eclipse is not complete, it signifies the loss of territory.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: A total lunar eclipse indicates great people will suffer calamity; another interpretation suggests it portends soaring grain prices; yet another says it signifies the decline of powerful families and the collapse of family lineages. The Shi school says: When the moon is partially eclipsed, its light is scattered and disordered, which is an omen of ministers. The Shi school also says: A total lunar eclipse with the moon's light completely lost is an omen of calamity for the sovereign. The *Shangshu Wei Xingde Fang* says: The five punishments should be light, but they become harsh and cruel instead. Suddenly a total lunar eclipse occurs, indicating that actions have lost their standard and law, which will lead to floods or droughts; the remedy is to use the five punishments with reverence and caution, cultivating the three virtues of strength, flexibility, and uprightness. The Shi school says: When the lunar eclipse exactly reduces the moon by half, and the loss does not exceed five-tenths, it indicates the state will face worries, military defeat, and the destruction of the army.
