《樂動聲儀》曰：“徵音和調，則熒惑日行四十二分度之一，伏五月得其度，不反明從海，則動應致焦明，至則有雨，備以樂和之。”

The "Yue Dong Sheng Yi" says: The Sheng tone of the five tones belongs to fire. When the Sheng tone is in harmony, the planet Mars moves one forty-second of a degree each day, remains hidden for five months, and then returns to its normal position. If it does not follow the normal course and return to brightness, and if it is moved by external influences, it will bring about the auspicious omen of "Jiao Ming," a water bird. When this bird appears, rain will follow. Music should be used to harmonize and respond to all these phenomena. The Spring and Autumn Wen Yao Gou states: When the planet Mars moves eastward quickly, it travels one and a half degrees per day. If the ruler indulges in excess and invites calamity, and if he plans military campaigns, then victory will be achieved by following the direction indicated by Mars, and defeat will result from going against it. The Shi school says: The usual rate of Mars' movement is one hundred and fifty-six days for each change of position, during which it passes through eighty-three degrees. The original commentary notes: The old Si Fen Li and Jing Chū Li calendars all follow the same principles in their calculations.

甘氏曰：“熒惑之東行也。急則一日一夜行七寸半，其益此則行疾，疾則兵聚於東方；熒惑之西行疾，則兵聚於西方；其南、其北，為有死喪；其南，丈夫之喪；其北，女子之喪。”甘氏曰：“熒惑法東方，修緯及常，十六舍而止；逆行西，運動以成章，舍一舍半。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars moves eastward, if it travels seven and a half chi in a day and night, exceeding this amount is called rapid movement; rapid movement indicates a gathering of troops in the east. When Mars moves westward quickly, troops gather in the west; if it deviates south or north, it signifies deaths—deviating south indicates the death of a man, deviating north indicates the death of a woman. The Gan school also says: Mars follows the way of the east, moving along the regular meridians and latitudes, and stops after passing sixteen star stations; when it moves westwardretrograde, it moves and stops in a regulated manner, retreating one station to one and a half stations each time.

巫咸曰：“熒惑休入常不得過五月而出，遠八月而出，受制則舉賢良，賞有功，主封侯，出財貨，行賑貸。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑日行一尺以上，期五月至十五月而廢；五寸以上，期十五月至二十五月而廢；三寸以上，期二十五月至三十月而廢；一寸以上，期三十月至五十月廢；諸廢期月或皆為日。”

Wu Xian said: If the planet Mars is hidden and enters beneath the sun, according to the usual pattern, it should reappear within five months at the earliest, and no later than eight months. If it moves according to its appointed course, then on earth there should be the recommendation of virtuous men, the rewarding of meritorious officials, the granting of titles of marquis by the sovereign, the distribution of wealth, and the implementation of relief and loans. The "Jingzhou Divination" states: If Mars moves one chi per day, its decline should occur between five and fifteen months; if it moves five cun per day, its decline should occur between fifteen and twenty-five months; if it moves three cun per day, its decline should occur between twenty-five and thirty months; if it moves one cun per day, its decline should occur between thirty and fifty months. The number of months mentioned in the above statements can sometimes also be calculated in days.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑順行而其國有道。”又曰：“熒惑出東方，行順，即其國吉。”《尚書緯》曰：“氣在初夏，其紀熒惑，是謂發氣之陽，可以毀消金銅，與氣同光，使民備火，皆清室堂，是謂敬天之明，必勿行武，與季夏相輔、初是夏之時、衣赤、與季夏同期；如是則熒惑順利、甘雨時矣。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars moves in its normal course, that country is a country of virtue. It also says: When Mars appears in the east and moves in its normal course, that country will be auspicious. The *Shangshu Wei* says: When the seasonal climate reaches the beginning of summer, the dominant celestial influence is Mars. This is called promoting the yang energy, and its power is sufficient to melt bronze and copper. People should align themselves with this fiery energy, teaching the people to guard against fires and to clean their houses and halls thoroughly. This is called honoring the heavenly virtue. At this time, one must not engage in warfare and should harmonize with the month of late summer; in the early summer season, people should wear red clothes, aligning with the same seasonal rhythm as late summer. If this is done, Mars will move smoothly, and sweet rain will fall on time.

甘氏曰：“熒惑之相也，從立春至春之盡，其色則當精明，無角芒。”《甘氏占》曰：“熒惑之王也，從立夏以至夏之盡，其色如赤，則當比心大星而精明；仲夏之時，有芒角。”甘氏曰：“熒惑之休也，從仲夏以至夏之盡，及四季王時，其色則當無精明，黑、黃。”甘氏曰：“熒惑之囚也，從立秋以至秋之盡，其色則當青、白，止不行。”甘氏曰：“熒惑之死也，從立冬以至冬之盡，其色則當細小、黃、黑，而不明，此熒惑色之常也；其色和，經天下，和平。”

The planet Mars, according to the Five Phases, is associated with different states of strength, namely, Sovereign, Minister, Rest, Captivity, and Death. The Gan school says that when Mars is in the Minister position, it is from the Beginning of Spring to the end of spring, at which time its color should be pure and bright, without anypointed rays. The Gan School's Divination says that when Mars is in the Sovereign position, it is from the Beginning of Summer to the end of summer, at which time its color is red, as bright as the great star of the Heart Mansion; by midsummer, it should havepointed rays. The Gan school says that when Mars is in the Rest position, it is from midsummer to the end of summer, and during the time when the Earthly Branches of the four seasons are strong, at which time its color should be dim, tending towards black or yellow. The Gan school says that when Mars is in the Captivity position, it is from the Beginning of Autumn to the end of autumn, at which time its color should be green or white, and it should stop moving. The Gan school says that when Mars is in the Death position, it is from the Beginning of Winter to the end of winter, at which time its color should be small, yellow or black, and not bright. These are the normal colors of Mars. When Mars moves through the sky with harmonious colors, the world is peaceful.

甘氏曰：“當其相也，而有王色，所居之國受殃；有休色，讒臣誅國，相免；有囚色，國有捕囚，及於將相；有死色，大臣誅傷；其留守也，其國兵起；其進舍也，有蟲蝗，五穀傷；其退守也，赤地千里。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars is in the position of 'Xiang' (favorable), but shows the color of 'Wang' (sovereign), the country it affects will suffer calamity; if it shows the color of 'Xiu' (rest), it indicates that a treacherous minister will be executed and the prime minister will be dismissed; if it shows the color of 'Qiu' (captivity), there will be arrests and imprisonments within the country, even involving generals and ministers; if it shows the color of 'Si' (death), high officials will be executed or harmed. If Mars remains in this position, the country will engage in military action; if it moves forward to the next star cluster, there will be locust plagues and damage to the five grains; if it retreats backward, there will be vast areas of scorched land.

甘氏曰：“當其王也，而有相色，蔽主聰；有休色，政令不行；有囚色，讒臣用事，王路不通，有死色，則有大喪；其留守也，不可舉事、用兵；其進舍也，其國不祥；其退舍也，有旱殃。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars is in the position of 'king', but shows the color of 'minister', it indicates that someone is misleading the ruler's hearing; if it shows the color of 'rest', then government orders cannot be carried out; if it shows the color of 'captivity', then slanderous ministers will be in power, blocking the path to the royal court; if it shows the color of 'death', there will be a great mourning. At this time, if it remains stationary, great undertakings should not be initiated, and military actions should not be taken; if it moves forward to the next star cluster, the country will be unlucky; if it retreats to the previous star cluster, there will be drought.

甘氏曰：“當有休色，而有王色；所居之舍，其國受禍；有相色，國亂，百官不從；有囚色，有小兵；有死色，盜賊橫行，訛言，廟堂有火災，所居之舍，其國受殃；其進舍也，災傷；其退舍也，利舌危。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars appears in the color of the 'Rest' position but instead shows the color of the 'Ruler' position, the country corresponding to the star house it occupies will suffer calamity. If it appears in the color of the 'Minister' position, there will be domestic unrest and officials will not obey orders. If it appears in the color of the 'Captivity' position, there will be minor military conflicts. If it appears in the color of the 'Death' position, bandits will run rampant, false rumors will spread, fires will occur in the ancestral temples and court, and the country corresponding to the star house it occupies will suffer misfortune. If it moves forward to the next star house, it indicates disaster and injury. If it retreats back to the previous star house, it signifies disputes and dangers arising from words.

甘氏曰：“當其囚也，而有王色，大臣逃亡；有相色，臣下毀傷；有休色，使者冠蓋相望；有死色，白衣成行，丁男從，獨有老公，所守之舍，道路不通；其進舍也，兵殃；其退舍也，談言訩訩。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars is in the 'imprisoned' position, but shows the color of the 'sovereign', it indicates the escape of high officials; if it shows the color of the 'minister', it means officials are slandered and harmed; if it shows the color of 'rest', there will be continuous envoys, with carriages and caps and robes coming and going in succession; if it shows the color of 'death', there will be processions of white-clothed mourners, conscripts are summoned for military service, leaving only old men at home, and the roads in the area corresponding to the star it guards will be blocked. At this time, if it moves forward to the next star position, there will be military calamity; if it retreats to the previous star position, there will be much gossip and unrest.

甘氏曰：“當其死色而有王也，宗廟不享；有相色，大臣攝行；有休色，是謂不詳，宗廟失火，邊有侵地；有囚色，丁壯多死，以兵所留；舍其國，君遂亡；開其府庫，出其甲兵，四十餘日破亡；其進舍也，數多微風；其退舍也，流水蕩蕩。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars appears in the color of the 'death' position but instead shows the color of the 'sovereign' position, it indicates the discontinuation of ancestral temple sacrifices; if it shows the color of the 'minister' position, it signifies that ministers will take over the royal authority; if it shows the color of the 'rest' position, this is considered an omen of ill fortune, leading to fires in the ancestral temples and territorial losses on the borders; if it shows the color of the 'captivity' position, there will be a large number of deaths among young men, due to military campaigns being held up outside the country. When Mars stops at a particular star mansion, the ruler of the corresponding state will eventually perish; once the state opens its treasury and deploys its military forces, it will be ruined within more than forty days. If Mars moves forward to the next star mansion, it indicates frequent light winds; if it retreats to the previous mansion, there will be widespread flooding and overflowing waters.

甘氏曰：“候熒惑以夏，丙丁，此王氣，當如其常色，變則失所也。”郗萌曰：“熒惑色變，一見一伏，求之所，不可得，奎之目，辰之心，參之右肩，龍之左角，畢之右股，此五星也，類此色，即熒惑也。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色以畢右星為正；一曰比心中央星。”《推度災》曰：“熒惑黑圓，為水喪。”《春秋緯》曰：“主亂虛而侵殺，則熒惑光益大。”

The Gan school says: Observing the planet Mars (fluorescent planet) should be done in summer, on days of Bing and Ding. At this time, it is in its flourishing phase, and its color should be normal. If it changes, it indicates that it has lost its position. Xi Meng says: Mars often changes its color, appearing and disappearing suddenly. When trying to find it, it is hard to locate. In such cases, one can use several fixed stars for comparison: the star of the eye of the Kuixiu mansion, the central bright star of the Xinxu mansion (Heart mansion), the right shoulder star of the Canshu mansion, the left horn star of the Blue Dragon, and the right thigh star of the Bishu mansion. The colors of these five stars can serve as a standard. The color similar to them, red, is the true color of Mars. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: The color of Mars should be compared with the star on the right side of the Bishu mansion. Another view says it should be compared with the central bright star of the Xinxu mansion. The "Pushing and Measuring Calamity" says: Mars appears black and round, indicating water disasters and funerals. The "Chunqiu Wei" says: When the ruler is corrupt and the inner state is empty, and there is infringement and warfare, the light of Mars becomes more intense.

甘氏曰：“熒惑色赤黃也、發疾；黑青、發難；黃若赤，一歲內發白色，期二年；青色、期三年；黑色、期四年至五年；以星行尺寸深淺，為廣大小期應。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑一赤一黃，王公有禍，士女降；候星若無光，先起兵者必敗。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars appears red and yellow, its effects occur quickly; when it appears black and dark blue, its effects take longer to manifest. If it appears yellow or red, the effect will occur within a year; if it appears white, the effect will occur in two years; if it appears blue, the effect will occur in three years; if it appears black, the effect will occur in four to five years. The size and speed of the effect should be determined by the distance and degree of the planet's movement and the depth of its color. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the planet Mars suddenly appears red and yellow, it indicates that a prince or noble will suffer misfortune, and scholars and women will be humiliated and forced to wear mourning clothes. When observing the planet, if the starlight appears dim and lacks a bright edge, the side that initiates the military action will surely suffer defeat.

巫咸曰：“熒惑如炬火，亡人怒，君子洙洙，小人搶搶，不有亂臣，則有大喪；亡期其使，吏欺其主；使之不殺，哀孤恤寡，則止。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑色赤，國有憂；厚白、則國有憂；薄蒼，即天下多喪，其國尤甚。”

Wu Xian said: The planet Mars shines like a torch, indicating that those who are away from home harbor anger, and the virtuous are anxious and unsettled, while the petty people are in great haste and panic; either there will be a traitor or a great mourning; the downfall will manifest in the person sent by it, and officials deceive the sovereign. To prevent this omen from resulting in slaughter, one must show compassion to orphans and comfort widows, and the calamity will cease. The "Sea Divination" says: When Mars is red and bright, there will be sorrow in the country; when it is white and thick, there will also be sorrow in the country; when it is blue and thin, there will be many deaths throughout the land, and the country it affects will be especially severe.

郗萌曰：“熒惑之常色赤而黃，有喪期六十日。”又曰：“熒惑色赤光而澤也，期不出二年，兵喪並起。”郗萌曰：“熒惑出色黃，所居宿有土功事。”

Xi Meng said: The usual color of the planet Mars is reddish-yellow; if it deviates from this, there will be mourning events, expected within sixty days. He also said: When Mars appears with a red color and a moist glow, military conflicts and mourning events will occur within two years. Xi Meng also said: When Mars appears with a yellow color, there will be construction activities in the region corresponding to the star mansion it occupies.

郗萌曰：“熒惑夏三月出南方，色赤而逆行，乃有害萌，火光之妖且見；觀之有德，而降之以福；觀之逆德，而降之以禍；幾降禍，流水湯湯，乃為之祠於祝融及南海之神。

Xi Meng said: The planet Mars appears in the southern direction during the three summer months, appearing red and moving retrograde, thus the calamity begins to arise, and an evil omen of fire-like phenomena will appear. Heaven observes the ruler: those who conform to virtue will be granted blessings; those who violate virtue will be subjected to calamity. When the calamity is about to descend and great waters rush violently, one should then perform worship to the fire deity Zhu Rong and the god of the Southern Sea to avert the disaster.

春見，為之修德，賞有功，論有勞，遷有善，任有能；夏見，為之寬政令，薄賦斂，賜爵祿，行賞罰，視以佐陽德；大暑乃至，時雨乃行，百姓乃豐，五穀乃登，甘雨和風乃至，草木以明零落，民不夭疾，帝乃延壽，是謂德。秋見，為之修吉初，逐有罪，誅有過；冬見，為之開閉，大赦。此四者，所以應天之明神也。”

When the planet Mars appears in spring, one should clarify virtue and governance, reward those who have merited, evaluate those who have labored, promote the virtuous, and appoint the talented; in summer, one should relax regulations, reduce taxes, grant titles and salaries, and ensure clear rewards and punishments, using these measures to support Yang Virtue. If these are done, the heat of the Dog Days will arrive on time, timely rain will fall in accordance with the seasons, the people will be prosperous, the five grains will mature, gentle rain and favorable winds will follow, and grass and trees will wither and flourish in accordance with the seasons. The people will not suffer from early death or epidemics, and the sovereign will thus prolong his life. This is called having virtue. When Mars appears in autumn, one should promote good governance, expel the guilty, and punish the guilty; in winter, one should regulate the opening and closing of gates and issue great pardons. These four measures are all used to respond to the heavenly deities.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑出，色赤怒，逆行為兵，成鉤以戰，凶有圍軍。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色大而盛，先起者亡，後起者晶。”《荊州占》曰：“勞惑色赤，為大兵，旱，秋有火災。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色變為黃，有德。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑秋出，色黃，兵而和。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色黃白，不出，其年喪起。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars appears red like anger and moves retrograde, there will be military conflicts; if its path twists into a hook shape, there will be warfare, and the dangerous situation is when the army is surrounded. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When Mars is bright red and strong, the side that initiates the war will suffer defeat, while the side that follows will prosper. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When Mars turns yellow, there will be great military conflicts and drought, and in autumn there will be fires. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When Mars appears yellow in autumn, although there may be military conflicts, they will eventually be resolved. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When Mars appears yellow and white, there will be death within the same year.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If the planet Mars appears yellow but is not bright, and then changes color, the climatic energies of the four seasons will not be harmonious—spring will not see growth, summer will not see flourishing of plants, autumn will not see fruiting, and winter will not see storage; if the planet changes color in all four seasons, the country will be ruined by the king's indulgence in music and women within the same year. The *Jingzhou Divination* also says: If Mars shines brightly like a torch, it indicates the presence of rebellious ministers and the downfall of the state, and the time of occurrence will be when envoys and officials deceive the king; the young will surpass the old, the subordinate will surpass the superior, the daughter-in-law will surpass the mother-in-law, the son will surpass the father, and the king's commands will not be carried out.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色青圓，為水，為憂，為飢；一曰色青者多雨。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色蒼黑，蒼多黑少有喪，蒼少黑多有水，蒼黑喪水並起，皆期六十日，或三年。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑出而色正黑，所守國有水殃，期六十日。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: The planet Mars appears red and round, indicating water disasters, worries and famine; another view says that if it appears dark blue, it indicates heavy rain. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When Mars appears with a bluish-black color, if the bluish tone is more prominent and the black is less, there will be mourning events; if the black is more prominent and the bluish is less, there will be water disasters; if the bluish and black are balanced, both mourning events and water disasters will occur, and the predicted time is either sixty days or three years. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When Mars appears with a pure black color, the country it is over will suffer from water disasters, and the predicted time is sixty days.

《詩緯》曰：“賢者退，小人進而讒言侈，陰賊行而天下昏，熒惑數出，干主位，赤而芒為火兵，黑而圓為水喪，止舍為其邦，疾則事急，留則殃重。”《春秋緯》曰：“熒惑主怒，則角擾動及繞圜之，若芒前後左右，主令無常，各以其類，亂虛而侵，殺則光為火。”

The Shijing Wei says: When virtuous people are excluded and retreat, while petty men rise up and slander prevails, sinister and cruel deeds become rampant and the world becomes chaotic, the planet Mars appears repeatedly, encroaching upon the king's star position. Its color is red with a芒, indicating fire disasters and military calamities; its color is black and round, indicating water disasters and funerals; wherever it stops, the corresponding state in that region will suffer; if it moves quickly, it indicates urgency; if it remains stationary, it indicates severe calamity. The Chunqiu Wei says: Mars represents anger, and when it is angry, it produces芒 and disturbs, moving in a circular path; if the芒 is present in front, behind, left, and right, it indicates the king's orders are inconsistent, and each category corresponds to the direction of the芒; when the state is corrupt and weak, and external enemies invade, once warfare occurs, its light becomes as fierce as fire.

甘氏曰：“熒惑色赤而芒角，其怒也；昭昭然明大，則軍戰，其國亦戰。”甘氏曰：“熒惑芒，名正旗；旗所指，破軍殺將，正旗而伐之，大勝。”郗萌曰：“熒惑環繞宿，其長戮，其同光死，其光若外附不同光，主出走。赤芒，南方國利之；白芒，西方國利之；黑芒，北方國利之；青芒，東方國利之；黃芒，中國利之。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars appears red with a bright and sharp芒, it indicates its anger; if it is bright, large, and shining, it signifies warfare, and the country corresponding to it will also be at war. The Gan school also says: The芒 of Mars is called 'Zhengqi', and the direction indicated by Zhengqi signifies the defeat of armies and the death of generals; if one attacks in the direction of Zhengqi, one will achieve a great victory. Xi Meng says: When Mars revolves around a certain star mansion, the official of that region will be executed; if the color of Mars matches the color of the star in that mansion, the person will die; if the light of Mars is floating outside and differs in color from the star, it indicates that the person will flee. If the芒 is red, it is favorable for the southern country; if white, favorable for the western country; if black, favorable for the northern country; if green, favorable for the eastern country; if yellow, favorable for the central country.

又占曰：“熒惑色正黑、多芒，所居之野有妖惑者。”司馬遷《天官書》曰：“熒惑白色，有哭泣之聲。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色正白，無芒，所居多有女喪；色正白而多芒，所居宿有男喪。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑始出，蒼，多芒，所居宿其國有妖而飢。”又占曰：“熒惑始出，色赤而芒，軍在外大戰，無軍起。”又占曰：“熒惑出色，黃多芒，所居宿，其國有憂主，期百二十日。”

Another divination passage states: When the planet Mars appears red with a dark black color and numerouspointed rays, there will be people spreading false words and causing confusion in the area it influences. Sima Qian's "Book of Celestial Officials" says: When Mars appears white, there will be mourning and crying. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Mars appears white without芒角, there will be many female deaths in the area it influences; when it appears white with numerous芒角, there will be many male deaths in the area it influences. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: When Mars first appears with a bluish color and numerouspointed rays, the country corresponding to the star mansion it occupies will experience strange occurrences and famine. Another divination passage says: When Mars appears red withpointed rays, it indicates a major battle involving the army; if there is no army already, it will lead to the formation of an army. Another divination passage says: When Mars appears yellow with numerouspointed rays, the country corresponding to the star mansion it occupies will face troubles that trouble the ruler, and this should be expected within 120 days.

又占曰：“熒惑生芒，為主憂。”又占曰：“角則兵起。”又占曰：“熒惑成鉤已繞環，有芒角，如鋒刃，人主無出宮下殿，有伏兵。”又占曰：“熒惑角，則主怒。”又占曰：“熒惑出而有角，行疾用武，行遲用文。”又占曰：“熒惑色青而角，來年之春，草木五穀肅；一曰色青而角，有兵憂。”

Another divination says: When the planet Mars shines brightly, the sovereign will have worries. Another divination says: When Mars has horns, there will be military actions. Another divination says: When Mars moves in a curved path, forming a hook shape and encircling, with horns and sharp edges like a knife, the sovereign must not go out of the palace or descend from the throne, for there are hidden troops. Another divination says: When Mars has horns, the sovereign will be angry. Another divination says: When Mars appears with horns, if it moves quickly, there should be military action; if it moves slowly, there should be cultural development. Another divination says: When Mars is green and has horns, the grass and grain of the coming spring will wither and not grow; another interpretation says that green Mars with horns indicates worry about military affairs.

韓楊曰：“熒惑出列宿之南，為孽；出列宿之北，復入，為盈；逆，為縮；如是者，其下必有伏尸腐肉。”甘氏曰：“熒惑，政緩則不出，急則不入，違道則占。”《尚書緯》曰：“政失於夏，則熒惑逆行。”《什圖徵》曰：“聖王正律曆；不正，則熒惑出入無常，占為大凶。”

Han Yang said: When the planet Mars appears south of the constellations, it indicates calamities and monsters; when it appears north of the constellations and then returns, it is called "ying"; when it moves retrograde, it is called "suo". When these phenomena occur, the place it appears over will surely have corpses lying everywhere and rotting flesh scattered about. Gan Shi said: The response of Mars is such that if the government's decrees are slow, Mars should appear but does not; if the decrees are urgent, Mars should retreat but does not. Any deviation from the norm should be used for divination. The "Book of Documents: Wei" says: If the summer decrees are improper, Mars will move retrograde. The "Shi Tu Zheng" says: A wise king should correct the pitch and calendar; if the pitch and calendar are not correct, Mars will appear and disappear unpredictably, indicating a great misfortune.

《春秋緯》曰：“熒惑主有謀氣，事未施行，則見怡其妖祥，反道二舍以上，居之三月，有淫佚；五月，受夷狄之兵，王以讒言致非；祥七月半，亡地；九月大半，亡地；因與宿俱入、俱出，國絕祀。”《文耀鉤》曰：“熒惑留其宿陰，四旬，太子死；三旬，重臣消。”《鉤命決》曰：“天子失義不德，則白虎不出，熒惑逆行。”

The Spring Annals Commentary states: The planet Mars indicates the qi of plots and schemes between people. Before the plans are carried out, strange omens appear. If Mars moves against the natural course and exceeds two star mansions, and stays for three months, it signifies there will be licentiousness; if it stays for five months, the country will suffer from military attacks by barbarians, and the king will cause mistakes by believing in slander; if it stays for seven and a half months, the country will lose its territory; if it stays for nine and a half months, it also signifies the loss of territory; if Mars disappears and appears together with the star mansion it is in, the state's ancestral worship will be cut off. The Literary Bright Hook states: If Mars lingers north of its dwelling star mansion for forty days, the crown prince will die; for thirty days, the chief ministers will perish. The Hook of Destiny states: When the emperor loses righteousness and virtue, the auspicious omen of the White Tiger does not appear, and Mars will moveretrograde.

石氏曰：“其國失禮，失夏政，則熒惑逆行。熒惑所留久也，三年而發，亡五百里；其中也，三百里；其殺也，四百里。居其陰，萬家邑，拔；千家邑，驅掠。居其陽，成家邑，驅掠；千家邑，拔。遠去而復還居之，甚憂，隘其從陰之陽，亡地三百里；（《荊州占》二百里。）從陽之陰，亡地二百里；（《荊州占》百里三百里。）從前之後，亡地二百里；從後之前，凶地三百里留。

The Shi school says: When a country's rites are in disarray and its summer policies are improper, the planet Mars will retrograde. If Mars remains in a constellation for a long time, after three years it will cause calamity, resulting in the loss of land measuring five hundred li. If it merely occupies the central position of the constellation, the loss will be three hundred li. If it forms an image of warfare, the loss will be four hundred li. If Mars is located to the north of the constellation, a city with ten thousand households will be captured, and a city with a thousand households will be plundered. If Mars is located to the south of the constellation, a large city will be plundered, and a city with a thousand households will be captured. If Mars departs far away and then returns to stay in the constellation, the calamity will be extreme and the situation will be desperate. If Mars moves from the north to the south, the loss of land will be three hundred li (note from the original text: The "Jingzhou Divination" says two hundred li). If it moves from the south to the north, the loss of land will be two hundred li (note from the original text: The "Jingzhou Divination" says one hundred li or three hundred li). If it moves from the front to the back, the loss of land will be two hundred li. If it moves from the back to the front, the danger will extend to areas within three hundred li where Mars is lingering.

其前六日不從，主首子死；留其陰旬二日，嬖人死；留其前一月，季子死；（《荊州占》太子死。）留其後二月，（《荊州占》二日。）不從，王后死，（《荊州占》季子死。）留其後，二旬，相死；留其陰五月，（《荊州占》一日。）上卿死，（《荊州占》王后死。）其前二旬，（《荊州占》一日。）太子死。”

It stops six days before the designated star without following, indicating the death of the ruler's eldest son; if it remains滞留在该宿北面 twelve days, it signifies the death of the favored attendant; if it stays for a month before the designated star, it indicates the death of the youngest son (note: the original text notes that the "Jingzhou Divination" says "prince"); if it remains two months after the designated star without following, it indicates the death of the queen consort (note: the original text notes that the "Jingzhou Divination" says "youngest son"); if it stays twenty days after the designated star, it indicates the death of the state chancellor; if it remains five months north of the designated star (note: the original text notes that the "Jingzhou Divination" says "one day"), it indicates the death of the top minister (note: the original text notes that the "Jingzhou Divination" says "queen consort"); if it stays twenty days before the designated star (note: the original text notes that the "Jingzhou Divination" says "one day"), it indicates the death of the crown prince.

巫咸曰：“熒惑出東方若西方，留遲者，天崇也；強國之王死之。”又曰：“留一月以上，為憂、為喪、為飢、為兵。熒惑之行東西南北，名曰失行，主用事者必且失其位，使之不然，殺不孝者以當失行，如此則止。

Wu Xian said: If the planet Mars appears in the east or the west and remains stationary without moving forward, this is heaven's warning of great importance; the king of a powerful state will die because of it. He also said: If it remains stationary for more than a month, it indicates calamity, death, famine, and war. If Mars moves erratically, sometimes east, sometimes west, sometimes south, sometimes north, this is called 'losing its path'; the person in power will certainly lose his position. To prevent this, one must execute the unfilial to counteract the loss of path, and only then will the calamity cease.

熒惑東行疾，名曰狡；狡者止，相且死。西行疾，名曰猶；猶者起，且有死將。南行疾，名曰讒；（《荊州占》曰：變其常，南行客三舍，名曰讒。）讒且有男喪。北行疾，名曰賊；賊且有女喪。熒惑靜居，不行，名曰營；且有殃。熒惑南去列宿間，客三舍，期百二十日；倍之，君不治，政在臣下使之然，不然，遷；不治復冤，冤止奸詐，如此則止。”

The planet Mars moves east quickly, called "jiao"; once the jiao phenomenon stops, the prime minister will die. If Mars moves west quickly, called "you"; when the you phenomenon appears, there will be the death of a general. If Mars moves south quickly, called "chan" (as noted in the commentary from the Jiangzhou Divination: changing the usual course and moving south across three star regions is called chan); when the chan phenomenon appears, there will be the death of a man. If Mars moves north quickly, called "ze"; when the ze phenomenon appears, there will be the death of a woman. If Mars remains stationary, called "ying"; when the ying phenomenon appears, there will be calamity. If Mars moves south away from its position, crossing into the constellations and passing over three star regions, the predicted time is 120 days; if it doubles that distance, it indicates the king neglects governance and power shifts to ministers, otherwise there will be migration. If governance is neglected, grievances will reappear; only by resolving grievances and stopping deceit can calamities be stopped.

京房《妖占》曰：“君多虛飾，則熒惑失道。”郗萌曰：“主行重賦斂，奪民時，大宮室，高臺榭事；則熒惑逆行，霜露肅殺五穀，民多病溫疫，擾軫。熒惑從北往南，是謂持水入於火，不出三年，國有大喪亂，兵起南方；熒惑妄行，一東、一西、一南、一北，主有吉凶；赤為兵，白為喪，黃為喜，青為憂，黑為水。”

Jing Fang's "Yao Zhan" says: If the ruler is full of empty words and superficiality, the planet Mars will lose its normal course. Xi Meng says: If the ruler imposes heavy taxes and levies forcefully, taking away the people's farming time, and extensively builds palaces and constructs high pavilions, then Mars will moveretrograde, causing frost and cold to destroy the crops, and the people will suffer from many diseases. The people's hearts will be disturbed and sorrowful. When Mars moves from the north to the south, this is called "holding water into fire." Within three years, there will be great mourning and chaos in the country, and military conflicts will arise from the south. When Mars moves erratically, sometimes east and west, sometimes south and north, there will be both good and bad events in the human world. When it is red, it signifies war; when white, it signifies mourning; when yellow, it signifies joy; when green, it signifies worry; and when black, it signifies flood disasters.

《元命包》曰：“妾為妻，支為嗣，精感類應，則熒惑逆行變怪。”郗萌曰：“熒惑逆行變色，人主簡宗廟，去禱祠，廢祭祀，逆天時，變妾為妻。熒惑逆行變色，為棄法律，殺太子，逐功臣。熒惑出而逆行變色，以內淫亂，犯親戚。熒惑而逆留守宿者，所主貨物皆貴。熒惑以庚辛日留，天下有大喪，有兵。”班固《天文志》曰：“熒惑所守，為亂、賊、喪、兵，守之久，其國絕嗣。”

The Yuan Ming Bao says: taking a concubine as a wife and a collateral branch as the legitimate heir, the vital energy and qi respond, like similar things corresponding to each other. The planet Mars (荧惑) movesretrograde and shows strange phenomena. Xi Meng says: when the planet Mars movesretrograde and changes color, it indicates the ruler is negligent toward the ancestral temple, abandoning worship and stopping sacrifices, violating the heavenly timing, and promoting a concubine to the position of wife. When the planet Mars movesretrograde and changes color, it signifies the abandonment of laws, the killing of the crown prince, and the expulsion of meritorious ministers. When the planet Mars appears and movesretrograde and changes color, it indicates disorder within the palace, and infringement upon relatives. When the planet Mars movesretrograde and remains in a certain star mansion, the goods governed by that star mansion will all rise in price. When the planet Mars stays in the days of Geng or Xin, there will be great mourning and military affairs. Ban Gu's "Astronomical Records" says: wherever the planet Mars stays, there will be turmoil, bandits, loss of life, and military calamities. If it stays for a long time, the country will lose its descendants.

《荊州占》曰：“王者不順禮遺德，不求賢舉隱，驕慢自恣，不順五常，耽於女色，妻妾為政，邪臣在位，殺戮無辜，陵弱暴強，星則為之逆行；出不以時，變為妖彗，蚩尤之旗，格澤之氣，起兵大戰，主死將亡，伏尸流血；王者行禮，起宗廟，禮山川，存孤恤寡，薄賦輕徭，星順度；可以除咎。”

The "Jingzhou Divination" says: If the king does not follow propriety, discards virtue, does not seek out the virtuous, does not promote the reclusive scholars, is arrogant and indulgent, acts without restraint, does not follow the five constants, is addicted to women, allows his concubines to interfere in government affairs, and allows wicked ministers to hold high positions, killing the innocent, bullying the weak, and being tyrannical and violent, then the planet Mars will retrograde for this reason. It will appear and disappear out of season, and strange phenomena such as "Chizhou's banner" and "Geze" will appear. Then wars will break out, the king will die, generals will perish, and there will be a great number of corpses and bloodshed. Conversely, if the king practices propriety, builds ancestral temples, and offers sacrifices to mountains and rivers according to ritual, cares for orphans, shows compassion to widows, and reduces taxes and labor service, then Mars will move in an orderly manner, and this will be sufficient to eliminate calamities.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑變色、失行，所留者亡，所抵者兵。熒惑逆行變色，人君宰相之治，推擇不以德賢，聖隱蔽，而不肖者進；遠忠臣而近讒諛；一曰人君宰相之治，驕恣不從五行，妻不政，賢者伏匿，讒臣亂治，逐功臣，誅不辜，即熒惑逆行變色。

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars changes color and deviates from its path, the region it stays over will suffer ruin, and the region it confronts will face military conflict. If Mars moves retrograde and changes color, it is because the sovereign and prime minister govern without selecting officials based on virtue and ability, causing the sages and virtuous to be hidden and obscured while the unvirtuous are promoted. They also distance themselves from loyal ministers and draw near to flatterers and sycophants. Another interpretation suggests that the sovereign and prime minister govern with arrogance and indulgence, not following the order of the Five Phases. The queen consort interferes improperly in politics, virtuous people remain hidden, corrupt ministers disrupt governance, capable ministers are expelled, and the innocent are executed. Thus, Mars moves retrograde and changes color.

熒惑變其常，東行客三舍，名曰縮星，縮星出，有死相。熒惑交其常，東行客三舍，名曰馳星，馳星出，有死將。（韓楊曰：東行疾，名曰馳星，有死將。）熒惑變其常，南行客三舍，名曰賊星，賊星出賊，將起；又為旱。熒惑逆行，色赤而怒，有兵。

The planet Mars deviates from its usual path and moves eastward across three star stations, which is called "Shuo Star"; when Shuo Star appears, there will be the death of a state minister. The planet Mars deviates from its usual path and moves southward across three star stations, which is called "Zei Star"; when Zei Star appears, bandits will rise up, and it also indicates a drought. When Mars moves retrograde, appearing red like anger, it indicates military conflict.

熒惑逆行，環繞屈曲，成鉤已，至三舍；名山崩、大川竭，若守之三日不下，其分國凶，有大喪。熒惑逆行至五舍，大臣謀反諸侯王也。熒惑逆行，必有破軍死將，國君若寄生；又曰夷將為王，敢誅者昌，不敢誅者亡；當此之時，趣立九候，置三王，取與必當，無逆天殃。

The planet Mars moves retrograde, winding around in a curved path forming the shape of a hook, and retreats straight for three star regions; this indicates the collapse of famous mountains and the drying up of great rivers. If it remains there for three days without leaving, the country corresponding to that region will suffer calamity and great loss. When Mars retrogrades and retreats through five star regions, it signifies that ministers and dukes will conspire against the king. When Mars retrogrades, there will certainly be the defeat of armies and the death of generals, and the king will barely survive. Another interpretation suggests that a person from the northern frontier will become king, and the side that dares to attack will flourish, while the side that dares not attack will perish. At this time, one must quickly appoint nine feudal lords and establish three kings, ensuring that rewards and punishments are properly administered, so as not to defy heavenly will and invite disaster.

熒惑當出不出，天下有兵，民流亡；當入不入，所在其國有殃。熒惑往來疾者，期不過九十日；遲者，不過三年；熒惑留二十日乃占；熒惑不動，兵不戰，有誅將。熒惑逆行二舍半，有火災；一曰有女喪；一曰為大水。熒惑、太白，東西南北行之，而復居其處，天下為四國謀者，其行也，同時馳。

If the planet Mars (荧惑) should appear but does not, there will be military conflicts and people will flee; if it should disappear but does not, the country corresponding to its position will suffer calamity. If Mars moves quickly, the predicted event will occur within ninety days; if it moves slowly, within three years. Mars can only be used for divination after it has remained stationary for twenty days. If Mars stops moving, even if two armies do not fight, there will be generals executed. If Mars retrogrades through two constellations and a half, there will be a fire; another interpretation says there will be the death of a woman; yet another says there will be a great flood. If Mars and the planet Venus (太白) move together in the directions of east, west, south, and north, and then return to their original positions, it indicates that there will be people who plan strategies for the four directions. When they move, they both move quickly.

熒惑出東方，其行順；則其國不凶，其逆行一舍，其國有兵，戰破，亡地，其色悴小，其國君有憂。熒惑行失度，而妄出宿間，天下作兵；熒惑東，則兵東；西，則兵西；南，則兵南；北則兵北。熒惑東西害侯王、一南一北為死喪。熒惑失行西北，是謂水，利於火，有兵兵罷，天下大旱；存孤老，廩鰥寡，天下並並附，則熒惑順度。熒惑春夏而失道南行，疾；為旱、為兵，在陽國；秋冬而失道北行，疾；為火入水，必有破軍殺將。”

The planet Mars appears in the east and moves smoothly, and the country will not suffer misfortune; if it retrogrades by one star mansion, the country will have military conflict, suffer defeat, and lose territory; if its color is pale and small, the king will have worries. If Mars moves irregularly, wandering unpredictably among the star mansions, there will be war throughout the land; if Mars deviates to the east, warfare will occur in the east; if it deviates to the west, warfare will occur in the west; if it deviates to the south, warfare will occur in the south; if it deviates to the north, warfare will occur in the north. If Mars fluctuates between east and west, it will harm the princes and kings; if it fluctuates between south and north, it will lead to death and mourning. If Mars strays to the northwest, this is called water, and it will be beneficial to the fire element; even if there is war, it will end, but there will be a great drought; at this time, if the ruler cares for orphans and the elderly, and provides relief to the widowed and the single, the people will flock to him, and Mars will return to its proper course. If Mars goes astray in spring or summer and moves southward quickly, it indicates drought and warfare, which will affect the southern yang country; if it goes astray in autumn or winter and moves northward quickly, this is called fire entering water, and there will certainly be the defeat of armies and the death of generals.

甘氏曰：“熒惑出入、進、退以戰；背之大勝，迎之大敗。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑順宿南行疾，有男喪。”又曰：“讒人將起。因宿北行疾，有女喪，賊將起。

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars appears and disappears, advances and retreats, if you attack in the direction opposite to it, you will achieve a great victory; if you attack in the direction it faces, you will suffer a great defeat. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Mars moves southward along the star mansions quickly, it indicates the death of a male. It also says: it signifies that a person who spreads slander will gain power. When Mars moves northward along the star mansions quickly, it indicates the death of a female and the rise of bandits.

熒惑正乘列舍，守之十日以上，其分內亂；二十日以上，相走；六十日主死；九十日殃及子孫。熒惑止留，三日以上，國則憂，相不死出走；十日以上，主大憂；一月至三月，三月至六月，殃及子孫。去之丈、傷五穀；去之七尺，傷人民；去之四五尺，傷吏；去之二三尺，傷卿相；去之一尺；傷主。

If the planet Mars is directly over a certain star mansion and remains there for more than ten days, disorder will arise within the corresponding region. If it stays for more than twenty days, the prime minister will flee. If it remains for sixty days, the sovereign will die. If it stays for ninety days, calamity will extend to the sovereign's descendants. If Mars stops and remains for more than three days, there will be troubles in the country, and the prime minister will either die or flee. If it stays for more than ten days, the sovereign will face great worries. If it stays for one to three months, or three to six months, calamity will extend to the sovereign's descendants. If Mars is at a distance of one zhang from the star it is guarding, it will harm the grain crops. If it is seven chi away, it will harm the common people. If it is four or five chi away, it will harm the officials. If it is two or three chi away, it will harm the ministers and prime ministers. If it is only one chi away, it will harm the sovereign himself.

熒惑出西方若東方，甚疾，至宿留二十日以上，及為留即去之；若復反其所留之宿，其君當之。”（《海中占》曰：國君死。）之所宿者，天子惡之；四孟之月，侯王受之；四仲之月，大臣受之；四季之月，小臣受之。

If the planet Mars appears in the west or east and moves very quickly, arriving at a certain star mansion and staying there for more than twenty days, then once it forms a lingering appearance, it departs. If it later returns to the same star mansion where it lingered before, the ruler of the corresponding region will suffer this calamity. According to the commentary from "Sea of Divination," the king will die. The region corresponding to where Mars stops will be ominous for the Son of Heaven. If it occurs in the first month, fourth month, seventh month, or tenth month, the Duke or Marquis will bear the calamity. If it occurs in the second, fifth, eighth, or eleventh month, the ministers will bear it. If it occurs in the third, sixth, ninth, or twelfth month, the lesser officials will bear it.

熒惑順行，留守宿二十日以上，與逆行不滿十日等；順行留守三十日以上，與逆行留守宿十五日等；順行留守宿四十日，與逆行留守宿二十日等，順行留守百日，與逆行五十日等；熒惑所守，其國宰相死。

If the planet Mars moves in its normal direction and remains in a position for more than twenty days, its effect is equivalent to Mars moving in the opposite direction and remaining for less than ten days. If Mars moves normally and stays for more than thirty days, its effect is equivalent to Mars moving in the opposite direction and staying for fifteen days. If Mars stays for forty days, it is equivalent to Mars staying for twenty days in the opposite direction. If Mars stays for one hundred days, it is equivalent to Mars staying for fifty days in the opposite direction. In summary, the region of the sky that Mars is stationed over will experience the death of the country's prime minister.

熒惑與宿星舍守之，其國大人死，守之久五年而發者，亡地五百里；期二年而發者，亡地二百里；期一年而發者，亡地百里。熒惑所守之分，其國凶；守之速，殃小；守之久，殃大；去而復還守之，或前、或後、或左、或右，殃殊重，不可救；國破，主死，流血城市。

If the planet Mars (荧惑) resides in the same mansion (星宿) as another star and remains there guarding it, the great person of that country will die. If it guards for a long time, the disaster will occur five years later, causing the loss of land for five hundred li. If it occurs within two years, the loss will be two hundred li. If it occurs within one year, the loss will be one hundred li. When Mars guards the mansion corresponding to a country's territory, that country will suffer misfortune. If the guarding is brief, the calamity will be minor; if it is prolonged, the calamity will be severe. If Mars leaves and then returns to guard again, either before or after, on the left or the right, the calamity will be especially grave and cannot be averted. The country will collapse, the ruler will die, and blood will flow through the city and streets.

熒惑逆行守星者，為飢；（即其年早飢也。）復還順行，黃色而至，糴為反賤。”韓楊曰：“熒惑東西南北疾，謀用戰，順之勝，逆之敗。”《漢天文志》曰：“熒惑順宿東行疾，則兵聚於東方；西行疾，則兵聚於西方。”

If it then turns back to normal motion and appears yellow, grain prices will decrease. Han Yang said: when Mars moves quickly in the directions of east, west, south, or north, if you plan military campaigns in the direction it is moving, you will win; if you go against its direction, you will lose. The Book of Han, Records of Astronomy says: when Mars moves eastward along the star mansions quickly, armies gather in the east; when it moves westward quickly, armies gather in the west.

韓楊曰：“熒惑乍東乍西，受者國大憂；居之久者，三歲；中、二歲；近、一歲，殃至。熒惑逆而西行，則不殺；為王敢誅者昌；不敢誅者亡。當此之時，趣立九侯，置三王，取與必當，無逆天殃。熒惑出於北方，不出其年，起兵；熒惑還北方，其兵不還，有憂。熒惑春出南方，有喪；不然，當小旱飢。熒惑春出於南方，群君不憂。

Han Yang said: If the planet Mars moves erratically from east to west, the country that experiences this celestial phenomenon will face great calamity. If Mars stays for a long time, disaster will arrive within three years; if it stays for a medium period, disaster will arrive within two years; if it stays for a short time, disaster will arrive within one year. If Mars moves westward in reverse, there will be no warfare. The country that dares to wage war as a ruler will flourish, while the country that does not dare to wage war will perish. At this time, it is essential to quickly enfeoff nine princes and establish three kings, and to bestow or take away power appropriately, so as not to defy the will of heaven and invite disaster. If Mars appears in the north, the country will have to go to war within the same year. If Mars returns to the north, the army on campaign will not return, and the ruler will face worries. If Mars appears in the south during spring, there will be mourning; otherwise, there will be minor drought and famine. However, if Mars appears in the south during spring, the princes will not need to worry.

熒惑凡行二十八宿，已去復還反，其國君死之；熒惑正乘其國之宿，星留三日，以戰，大將死；留五日，君破亡地；留十日，其君死，國無兵。而熒惑正乘其宿，星留十日，內亂起，絕宿；星從南之北，從北之南，其國貧；一曰所居久者，其野有兵。”

The planet Mars travels through the Twenty-Eight Mansions. If it departs and then returns, the ruler of the corresponding region will die. If Mars is directly positioned over a mansion belonging to a country and remains there for three days, there will be the death of a general in battle; if it remains for five days, the ruler will lose territory; if it remains for ten days, the ruler will die and the country will have no soldiers left. If Mars is directly positioned over a mansion and remains there for ten days, internal disorder will arise and the ancestral temple will be destroyed. If Mars moves from south to north and then from north to south through the mansions, the country will become impoverished; another interpretation is that if Mars stays for a long time, there will be military conflict in that region.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑所居久者，其野有兵；入其星三日，其野有憂；過三日，其憂大。”韓楊曰：“熒惑常行，其留不行從宿居，入宿又守之，其國當舉兵戰鬥，殺將亂事，家室破殘，父子相扶於流亡；又曰熒惑行絕道，正乘宿，留二十日以上至五十日，破軍殺將。

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars stays in a certain region for a long time, there will be military conflicts in that region. If Mars enters a certain star and stays there for three days, there will be worries in that region. If it stays more than three days, the worries will be greater. Han Yang says: When Mars normally moves along its path, if it suddenly stops and stays in a certain star, entering it and remaining there without moving, the country will soon engage in warfare, kill its generals, and experience great disorder in its government. Families will be destroyed, and father and son will have to support each other in fleeing. It also says: When Mars moves across the sky and blocks the usual path, directly pressing on a certain star, and stays there for more than twenty days up to fifty days, it indicates that the army will be defeated and the generals will be killed.

熒惑之行無常，東行守宿十日為留，其環所久宿者，殃其國，宰相死。熒惑東行四十日，行三舍以上，謹守其反日；不行日；數之百八十日，女孽出。”班固《天文志》曰：“熒惑逆行一舍、二舍；為不祥。”韓楊曰：“熒惑西行，行三舍以上，謹守其反日，數之百八十日，兵起，不然天妖出。”韓楊曰：“熒惑逆行而留，其國逆凶；順行而留，其國順凶。”石氏曰：“熒惑逆行，還復故道，名曰燒跡，其災重。”

The planet Mars does not follow a fixed path; when it moves eastward and stays for ten days in a particular star mansion, it is called 'stagnation'. If Mars circles around and remains in a particular star mansion for a long time, calamity will befall that country and the prime minister will die. If Mars moves eastward for forty days and passes over three star mansions, one must carefully record the day it turns back and the day it stops moving. Counting from that day, if it reaches one hundred and eighty days, there will be a female demon causing chaos. Ban Gu's 'Astronomical Records' states: if Mars moves westward and passes over one or two star mansions, it indicates ill omens. Han Yang says: if Mars moves westward and passes over three star mansions, one must carefully record the day it turns back. Counting from that day, if it reaches one hundred and eighty days, military conflicts will arise; otherwise, there will be strange celestial phenomena. Han Yang also says: if Mars moves westward and then stagnates, the country's misfortune comes from rebellion; if it moves eastward and then stagnates, the country's misfortune comes from following old ways. The Shi school says: if Mars moves westward and then returns to its original path, this is called 'burning the trail', and the disaster it brings is especially severe.
