The Spring and Autumn Secret Spring River says: If a horse enters the palace, it indicates that ministers will not obey the king's orders and will be disloyal. If the horse also makes a loud noise, that minister will become famous throughout the world, the king's commands will not be carried out, and he will be easily captured. The original commentary explains: A horse is the essence of the earth's energy, belonging to the yin. It obeys people and can be everywhere. Now suddenly entering the palace, it is a sign that a minister intends to seize the throne and occupy the palace. The term 'making a sound' refers to the horse making noise on that day, symbolizing that the minister wishes to take the position of the king, issue orders, and act on behalf of the king's commands.

Jing Fang said: A horse running into the palace of the sovereign indicates military affairs and great troubles for the sovereign. The "Yi Yuan" records that in the 14th year of Hou Zhao's Jianwu era, a demon horse appeared, blue in color, with a tail burned like it had been set on fire, running from Zhongyang all the way to beneath the palace gates; in that year, Shi Hu died, and chaos broke out throughout the country. The "Jinyang Chou" records that in the eighth year of Dong Jin's Xiankang era, a horse of blood-red color appeared, running directly from Xuanyang Gate to the palace courtyard, then ran out and disappeared. The "Er Shi Wei Shi" records that Shi Hun said that in the 14th year of Jianwu era, a horse with a spotted coat and four eyes suddenly appeared, tied up in the palace, and after ten days, it suddenly ran away and disappeared.

A horse grows horns.

The "Earth Mirror" says: If a horse suddenly grows horns, the ruler will launch an attack against another country, but will ultimately suffer defeat and destruction. The "Spring and Autumn Annals of the Master Liang" says: The strange phenomena of a chaotic state include such things as a horse growing horns. Jing Fang says: When those below do not obey the orders of government, the strange phenomenon is a horse growing horns, which is called that virtuous men are not properly employed. He also says: When the Son of Heaven is about to personally lead an expedition, horses will grow horns. The "Hongan Five Phases Transmission" records: In the twelfth year of Emperor Wen of Han, there was a horse in Wu that grew horns. The horns grew in front of the ears, stood upright, the right horn was three inches long, the left horn was two inches long, and both were two inches thick. Liu Xiang believed that a horse should not grow horns, just as King Wu of Wu should not have raised an army against the imperial court.

The "Hong Fan Wu Xing Zhuan" also records: In the second year of Shuihe during the reign of Emperor Cheng of the Han dynasty, the horses in the grand stables of the Grand Master of the Imperial Stables grew horns in front of their left and right ears, each horn being one inch in circumference. The original text mistakenly reads "Xian Di" instead of "Cheng Di." At that time, Wang Mang was serving as Grand Master of the Imperial Secretariat, and the signs of his plot against the sovereign began from this time. The "Jin Ji" records: In the fourth year of Long'an during the Eastern Jin dynasty, the governor of Liangzhou, Guo Qian, presented a horse with long horns, which was a sign of Huan Xuan's usurpation. The "Zhao Shu" records: In Linjing County of the Former Zhao dynasty, there was a horse that grew horns on its ears, seven inches long, which would shake when moved.

A male horse gives birth to a foal.

Jing Fang said: When a feudal lord seizes the authority of the sovereign, the omen is a stallion giving birth to a foal. The Records of the Grand Historian records that in the twentieth year of King Zhao of Qin, a stallion gave birth to a foal which died immediately; not being of the same kind yet giving birth randomly and dying immediately, just like the state of Qin relying on its military force to take over the world, eventually leading to its own downfall. The Book of Han, Five Elements Chapter records that in the second year of Jianping during the reign of Emperor Ai of Han, in Dingshang Commandery, a stallion gave birth to a foal with three legs, which could still follow the herd to drink water and graze. The governor reported this incident to the imperial court. Horses are used for the military strength of the state, and a foal with three legs symbolizes the inability to be used. Later, the attendant middle minister Dong Xian became the Grand General at the age of twenty-two, holding a high position, but the people did not respect him. Emperor Ai died suddenly, and the mother of Emperor Cheng, Wang太后, summoned her nephew Wang Mang to the court, took back Dong Xian's seal and ribbon, and Dong Xian committed suicide, while Wang Mang took his place.

In the "Ancient and Modern Annotations" by Cui Bao, it is recorded that during the fourth year of Emperor Ai of Han's Taichu era, a horse in Zhang Youqing's family gave birth to a foal with one body and three heads and nine mouths, each mouth able to speak. The people wrote down what the foal said on their own doorways (as a means of warding off misfortune). The "Hua Yang Guo Zhi" records that when Li Te, the ruler of Cheng Han, was about to be defeated, a horse gave birth to a foal with one head and two bodies, having six teeth, and it was a male foal. The "Yi Yuan" records that during Li Shi's reign, a horse gave birth to a foal with one head, two bodies, and six legs, and the foal had both male and female characteristics on the same body.

Later, Qin Shi Huang was probably the son of Li Buwei. The "Shi Ji" records that during King Xiao's time, a horse gave birth to a human. Liu Xiang believed these events all belonged to "horse calamity." King Xiao began to adopt Shang Yang's strategies of attack and defense, and expanded eastward to seize the states of the feudal lords. This omen indicated that the state of Qin would strive to the utmost with military force, achieve great accomplishments, but eventually would bring about its own ruin.

Sheep's Auspicious Omen

The Jade Sheep Appears

The *Ruiying Tu* says: When the bronze bells are in harmony, the five tones, Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu, all conform to the proper measures, and the auspicious omen of a jade sheep appears. This occurred during the time when the Jin country music master Shi Kuang was alive.

Sheep disease; wild sheep; two sheep mouths; six sheep heads; many sheep horns

The Han Shu · Wu Xing Zhi says: if the ruler fails to observe things clearly, this is called "inconsiderate," and thus there will be "sheep calamity," with many sheep dying from disease, and various strange phenomena occurring. The Guoyu says: when the Shang dynasty was about to perish, a wild sheep appeared at Muye. The commentary in the original text cites Dong Han Jia Kui, who says that wild sheep are divine beasts; it also cites the Huozhi Zhuan, which says that sheep means "Yang"; and it cites Xu Shen's commentary on the Huainanzi, which says that wild sheep are a large kind of sheep. "Mu" refers to Muye, the grazing land of the Shang dynasty.

The Tian Jing says: A sheep with one head and two mouths indicates that the crops will not mature in that year, and the people will suffer from hunger and flee. The Zai Yi Tu says: If the marquises and governors who are in charge of ten thousand households do not respect the imperial orders and are harsh and cruel, and the people sigh and complain, then a sheep with six heads will appear. The Yi Yuan records: In the early years of Jianwu during the reign of Shi Hu of the Later Zhao dynasty, Yu Da-liu of Nan'an in Qinzhou presented ten sheep with six horns and ten sheep with four horns. Among the Qiang people in the mountains, there were also sheep with three horns, five horns, and a single-horned cattle called Maoniou, all belonging to the same category of strange creatures. In Huangqu Village, Jingling, there was a sheep with two heads, one of which was facing downward and could not make any sound.

A sheep has four ears. A sheep has no feet. A sheep gives birth to a dog and a horse.

The Yellow River Chart says: a black sheep with four ears and eyes located under its armpit, this monster is called "Nie," and its appearance signifies that someone will rise up to become a king. The Heavenly Mirror says: a sheep without hind legs indicates initial good fortune followed by misfortune. It also says: a sheep without front legs indicates initial worry followed by joy. The Jin Dynasty's Revival and Auspicious Signs records: in the first year of Xianhe, the sheep in the Ministry of State Affairs gave birth to a lamb without hind legs, and later Su Jun rebelled. The Heavenly Mirror also says: a sheep giving birth to a dog indicates the country will be invaded by foreign enemies. It also says: a sheep giving birth to a horse indicates that there will be military conflicts in the world.

Dog's misfortune omen

A dog has a mad disease.

The *Hóngfàn Wǔxíng Zhuàn* says: "Dog calamity" belongs to the western direction, because dogs guard with their mouths, which corresponds to speech; when the ruler's words become corrupt, dogs will be harmed and fall ill, hence it is called dog calamity. When there is a drought, dogs often go mad and die; some say that when the qi of speech becomes chaotic, dogs turn into strange creatures, and this can be used to predict the date of the calamity. Jing Fang says: when wicked ministers are close to the ruler, dog demons will arise, and there will be many locusts that year; appointing佞men causes damage to all things, and when dog demons appear, military disasters will follow. He also says: if a dog can speak human language, good or bad fortune will be confirmed by what it says. He also says: when a dog calls out to its master, the master is about to die. The *Tian Jing* says: when a dog makes human sounds, the current ruler will be replaced.

A pack of dogs howls; dogs eat their young; dogs feed their parents; dogs carry their young; dogs do not bite mice.

The Huainanzi says: During the reign of Xia Jie, he disturbed the heavenly orders, causing all things to lose their proper places. Dogs all howled together, and evil spirits arose from the deep. The apocryphal text Spring and the Movement of the Stars says: When the seven celestial bodies are disordered, the ruler is held captive, and then the dogs throughout the land howl. The Heavenly Mirror says: If dogs howl in the streets and alleys, there will be bandits in the cities within the year; if a pack of dogs howl in the streets and alleys, there will be internal and external military mobilizations, with calamities arising from within the court within the year; if two dogs howl, and the others join in, there will certainly be military conflict; if a pack of dogs howl at the city, within three years and three months, the country will be empty and in decline; if dogs howl on the rooftops, the state will suffer a loss; if dogs howl in the gates and alleys, the city will not be at peace.

Jing Fang said: If a dog howls at the hall in the early morning or late night, there will be a death in the family, and the same applies to the whole city. The "Heavenly Mirror" says: When a group of dogs howl, if they howl inside the house in the evening, there will be good news for a male or female member of the family; if they howl inside the house in the early morning, the eldest daughter will die. The "Mozi" says: When the Sanmiao caused great chaos, the heavenly mandate was about to be overturned, and the dogs howled in the market. The "Heavenly Mirror" says: If a dog howls face to face at a person and turns around, its master will travel far away; if it is a dog from the royal family, it indicates that the king will go on a military campaign, the general will be wounded, and the soldiers will also be wounded. The "Jingfang Yizhuan" says: When a group of dogs howl together, the country is about to perish.

The Tian Jing says: A mother dog eats her own puppy, and there will be no thieves in the country. It also says: A puppy is born and then feeds its mother, and the country will have a spirit of righteousness. It also says: A dog carries its puppy and runs into the city, and the country will not need to go to war; neighboring states will naturally come to submit. If a dog carries its puppy into the alley, the people will leave their homeland. Jing Fang says: A group of dogs see a rat but do not move, and the city will have harmful villains, while the officials above cannot control those below.

Dogs gather at the gate, dogs bathe in water, dogs emerge from the ground.

Jing Fang said: If dogs die unexpectedly in the city gate and palace gate, piling up like corpses, it is a great omen of misfortune. He also said: If dogs appear in groups without reason and go to the water to bathe, great military conflicts will arise. Furthermore, if dogs emerge from the ground, the city will suffer a great flood and the ruler will fall into poverty. The "Book of Jin: Omen Records" states: In the second year of Xingping, two small dogs, one male and one female, were found underground in the official buildings of Wu Commandery. The governor Zhang Mao heard the sound of small dogs from inside the study, under the bed, and saw the ground splitting open, revealing the two dogs, which he then raised and grew up. Soon after, Zhang Mao was killed by a conspiracy. The original notes in the book cite the "Summer Tripod Records" saying: digging up a dog is called "Jia"; and cite the "Shizi" saying: a dog underground is called "Di Lang."

The *Book of Jin: Records of Auspicious Signs* also records that during the Taoyuan period of Emperor Xiaowu of Jin, in the county of Qian in Lujiang, a man named He Xu suddenly heard the sound of a small dog underground. He dug where the sound came from and saw a mother dog, which looked very weak. It ran into a cluster of water caltrops and disappeared. When he looked back at the original place, there were two small dogs, one male and one female. He took them home to raise. The mother died, but the male survived. When it grew up, it became a good dog skilled in hunting wild animals. Later, that area was occupied by barbarians. During the Long'an period of Emperor An of Jin, General Fuguo Sun Wuzhong's family in Jiyang heard the sound of a small dog underground. They dug and found the ground split open, with white small dogs, one male and one female. They took them home to raise, but both died. Later, Sun Wuzhong was killed by Huan Xuan.

A dog wearing a crown

Jing Fang said: When a ruler acts improperly, a minister desires to seize power, and the omen is a dog wearing a hat walking out from the palace gate. The "Book of Han: Five Phases Chapter" records that when Prince Liu He of Changyi was a vassal king, he saw a white dog wearing a square hat come out, the dog wearing a hat but without a tail, which belongs to "clothing omen," foretelling dog-related calamity. Gong Sui said: This is a warning from heaven to the ruler. Liu He was later deposed and died, unable to have successors, which exactly matched the omen of the dog without a tail. The "Continued Book of Han: Five Phases Chapter" records that during the Xiping period of Emperor Ling of Han, within the palace, dogs were made to wear hats and have seals tied around them as a form of entertainment; a dog suddenly ran out and rushed into the gate of the Ministry of Works, causing everyone who saw it to be shocked and surprised. Emperor Ling favored his close favorites and petty officials, openly selling official positions in the Western Garden, which was exactly the portrayal of "a dog wearing a hat."

The Tian Jing says: When a dog grows horns, the current ruler should expand his territory. Jing Fang says: When a dog grows horns, it certainly indicates that the ruler's governance is improper and petty men are promoted. The Han Shu · Wu Xing Zhi records that in the fifth year of Emperor Wen's Houyuan period, a dog with horns appeared outside the city gate of Qi. Before that, King Zhao Huiwang of Qi had already died, and Emperor Wen divided Qi's territory, establishing his seven庶 sons as kings. These brothers became powerful at the same time, harboring arrogant and rebellious intentions. Therefore, the dog calamity occurred. A dog is associated with guarding; horns belong to the military symbol. Horns growing on the head indicate an upward challenge. A dog should not grow horns, just as the princes should not raise armies against the capital.

The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Movement of the Stars and the Pivot says: A dog with two heads indicates that people going out must carry blades in their mouths for protection. Song Jun's commentary says: Dogs are originally meant to bark and guard the gate for people, but now they have two heads and carry weapons when going out, which is an omen that palace attendants wish to rebel against the sovereign and take control themselves. The Earth Mirror says: A dog running into the house and mating is an omen of the ruler's downfall. The Book of Lord Li says: In a chaotic state, there are strange occurrences such as dogs mating with pigs. The original commentary says: According to the Records of the Han Dynasty's Five Phases Chapter, in the third year of Emperor Jing of Han, a dog mated with a pig in Handan. This is a result of perverse and chaotic energies, close to the calamity of dogs and pigs. At that time, Prince Zhao Wang Liu Sui was rebellious and confused, conspired with Wu and Chu to rebel, and sent envoys to the Xiongnu for aid, eventually being executed. Jing Fang says: When the sovereign and the empress consort are not respectful and self-restrained, the strange occurrence is dogs mating with pigs, which is called 'reversal of virtue', and the country will face military calamity.
