The Shi school says: When the moon wanes in the Willow mansion, it indicates that high officials will be dismissed. The Gan school says: When the moon wanes in the Willow mansion, it indicates that officials responsible for mountains, rivers, and water control will be dismissed. The original text notes that '蚀' was mistakenly written as '烛'. Xi Meng says: When the moon wanes in the Note star, it indicates that people will eat each other. The original text notes that 'Note' is another name for the Willow mansion. The Gan school says: When the moon wanes in the Seven Stars mansion, it indicates a loss of the vital yang energy and the Wealth star and mother star, leading to sudden execution of high officials and great famine in the country; also, officials responsible for documents and legal cases will be dismissed. Xi Meng says: When the moon wanes in the Seven Stars mansion, it indicates that officials responsible for roads, bridges, gates, and defenses will be dismissed.
The Gan school says: When the moon wanes in the Zhang mansion, it indicates that a person of high status will lose power, and the queen will have worries, with the event occurring within seventy days. Xi Meng says: When the moon wanes in the Zhang mansion, it indicates people eating each other. The Gan school says: When the moon wanes in the Zhang mansion, it indicates that the water balance general and the forest and lake officer will have someone dismissed. The Gan school says: When the moon wanes in the Yi mansion, it indicates that loyal ministers will be slandered, and the upright and virtuous will perish, occurring within the same year. Xi Meng says: When the moon wanes in the Yi mansion, it indicates that the official in charge of carriages will be dismissed. The Gan school says: When the moon wanes in the Chen mansion, it indicates that the powerful ministers will perish; another interpretation suggests the queen will be uneasy, with the event occurring within one hundred and eighty days. Xi Meng says: When the moon wanes in the Chen mansion, it indicates the mobilization of chariots and cavalry. (The Chen mansion originally governs carriages, so the disaster will affect chariots and cavalry.)
The moon invades the central official stars of the Shi school and causes an eclipse lasting twenty days.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon is eclipsed in the star cluster Jian, it indicates that there will be a concubine or a maid-in-waiting among the royal harem who will be dismissed. (The Jian star cluster consists of six stars located north of the Nandou star cluster, representing the banners and gates of the Son of Heaven.) The Shi school says: When the moon is eclipsed in the Taimei Enclosure, it signifies the possibility of the country's destruction and the replacement of the king.
The moon was outside the Shi school's outer observatory and was eclipsed twenty-one times.
The Shi school says: When the moon is eclipsed in the constellations Gu Shu and Tian Lang, the officials responsible for providing food and drink to the sovereign should be dismissed; another interpretation suggests that those who receive salaries and food will perish. (Gu Shu and Tian Lang are located south of Jing Xu, and belong to the outer officials transmitted by Shi Shen, originally responsible for guarding against thieves and defending the realm.)
Saving the Moon Eclipse, Twenty-two
The Sea of Divination says: When an eclipse of the moon occurs, the sovereign should perform a ritual to avert calamity, thus eliminating misfortune and restoring peace. It also says that during a lunar eclipse, one should clear up legal cases, clarify rewards and punishments, and regulate laws and regulations. The Rites of Zhou, Department of the Grand Master, says: When performing the ritual to avert a lunar eclipse, one should request the sovereign to personally beat the drum. Zheng Xuan explains: When avert a solar or lunar eclipse, the sovereign must personally beat the drum. The Book of Rites, On the Meaning of Marriage, says: If the education of women's virtue is neglected, and matters of the yin aspect are out of order, heaven will send a warning sign, and the moon will be eclipsed as a result. Therefore, when a lunar eclipse occurs, the empress should wear plain mourning clothes,整顿 the duties of the six palaces, and cleanse all yin-related affairs throughout the land. The Star Transmission says: The moon governs punishment, so when a lunar eclipse occurs, one should reform the judicial system. (Original book note: Zheng Xuan says, when avert a lunar eclipse, the sovereign must personally beat the drum.)

Five Stars Divination One
The five stars each govern one thing.
The Spring and Autumn Writings state: There are five heavenly emperors in the heavens, and the five stars are their envoys. The Jingzhou Divination says: The five stars are the refined essence of the Five Phases, the sons of the Five Emperors, and heavenly envoys who move among the twenty-eight mansions, observing and inspecting unrighteous states. If a ruler extends benevolence and virtue, is upright, tranquil, and non-interfering, the five stars will follow their regular paths, appearing and disappearing in accordance with the seasons, bringing peace to the world and preventing calamity. But if a ruler lacks virtue, listens to villains, expels the virtuous, distances the gentlemen, and draws near the petty, the five stars will moveretrograde, change their colors, appear at inappropriate times, and raise theirpointed rays, becoming wrathful and transforming into妖星, such as comets,孛星,茀星,扫星, Heavenly Dog,枉矢,天枪,天掊,搀云, and格泽. These phenomena will be followed by mountain collapses, earth tremors, river droughts, and heavenly blood rains, with various omens appearing together, leading to great chaos, the death of the ruler, and the destruction of the state, which cannot be reversed. The remaining calamities will further manifest as famine, drought, and epidemics.
The Gan school says: Among the five planets, the one governing military affairs is the White Star; the one governing grain harvests is the Jupiter; the one governing drought and flood is the Red Star; the one governing earthworks is the Filling Star; and the one governing water affairs is the Dawn Star. If they go out of their proper course, the Jupiter and the Earth Star are ominous when they moveretrograde; the Red Star is ominous when it forms a hook shape and lingers; the White Star is ominous when it appears or disappears out of season; and the Dawn Star is ominous when it fails to appear at the proper time. If all five ominous signs appear together, the harvest of that year will certainly be poor. (The original text mistakenly writes 「茕」 instead of 「荧」.)
Wu Xian said: The five stars represent the energies of the Five Phases in a state of mutual overcoming. The twelve earthly branches and the twenty-eight mansions can be summarized as either '刑' (punishment) or '德' (virtue). The sun belongs to the Red Bird, the moon to the Black Tortoise. The Room Mansion and Heart Mansion belong to the Azure Dragon, while the Three Stars Mansion belongs to the White Tiger. These constellations often face the Big Dipper and Taiyi. If these can be clearly discerned, all matters of divination will be complete. When the five stars and the twenty-eight mansions are in the phase of 'Wang' (dominance), they signify matters concerning the ruler; when in 'Xiang' (minister), they relate to officials and ministers; when in 'Qiu' (captivity), they pertain to prisoners; and when in 'Fei' (decline), they concern the common people. (Wang, Xiang, Qiu, and Fei represent the successive phases of the Five Phases according to the changing strength of the four seasons.)
The five planets are each subject to the constraints of the Five Phases and individually observe and scrutinize countries that are unjust. Therefore, one must examine the retrograde and direct motion of the planets, their changing colors, and their lingering in a particular star position. "Ling" refers to the planet stopping in its motion, while "shou" means the planet remains in a certain star position for several days without moving. One should observe the planet's expressions of joy and anger, whether the color change occurs on the left or right, in front or behind, the distance between them, whether they are scattered or gathered, and whether they are mutually harmful or controlling. One should also determine whether the planet's movement is along the yin or yang path, until the interactions among the Five Phases' energies are clearly understood. The king can then take corrective measures to transform misfortune into good fortune, ensuring the preservation of the ancestral temple and the continued existence of the state. The Shi school's "Five Stars Ode" states: the five planets take turns appearing and disappearing, specifically overseeing ominous events. If they align with the seasons and remain within their usual paths, they will not become calamities. If during a full moon they should appear but do not, the matter will surely arise. If they should emerge but do not after their appointed time, secret plots are being carried out. One should determine the direction corresponding to the star position where the planet is stationed, observing whether the planet's brightness and its position are abnormal. Then carefully examine the distinctions of the five colors—green, yellow, red, white, and black—and determine the specific calamity each color signifies.
The movement of the five stars, their excess, deficiency, and deviation from their proper paths.
The Shi school says: If the five planets do not deviate from their regular paths, the year will have abundant and prosperous harvests. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: In a virtuous state, the five planets pass through their respective regions without departing from their normal courses, which indicates the sovereign will have good fortune and prosperity, and the people will be at peace. It also says: When the five planets move along the central path of the Yellow Path, the world will be in peace; when they move along the northern path of the Yellow Path, which is the yang path, there will be drought; when they move along the southern path of the Yellow Path, which is the yin path, there will be excessive rain. (The original text has both instances as "yin path," but the first one should be a mistake for "yang path.") The "Dongsheng Yi" says: When the five tones, Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu, are in harmony, the five planets will each follow their proper paths. Chen Zhuo says: When the five planets move along the yin path, there will be much scheming and intrigue.
The Shi school says: Divide the celestial sphere in half, and when the five planets gather in the east, it indicates great benefit for the central plains; when they gather in the west, it indicates benefit for the distant coastal regions, and the side that uses military force will gain advantage. The "Chunqiu Wei" says: When the five planets appear earlier than their usual positions, it is called "ying," and "ying" takes the position of the guest; when they appear later than their usual positions, it is called "suo," and "suo" takes the position of the host; calamity occurs in the direction opposite to it. The "Kao Lingyao" says: If the heavens lose the sun and moon, it is like losing the bag containing precious jewels. (Original book note: The jewels refer to the five planets, and losing the bag refers to the five planets being out of their proper positions.)
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the five planets do not pass between the southern and northern rivers, there will certainly be a minister who does not abide by the way of a subject. Another interpretation says this indicates a definite obstruction in the roads. The Spring Orbit says: The king and the ministers each have their own schemes, resentment and anger accumulate in their hearts but remain unspoken. This surge of spirit and energy moves all things, and the five planets then become disordered in their respective positions. Xi Meng says: If the five planets do not pass through the heavenly gate and heavenly terrace, it foretells a funeral. (The text of this section ends here; the last sentence is missing from the original, and the following text belongs to the next section.)
The five planets (the bright star, which is Jupiter, the red star, which is Mars, the filling star also called the stabilizing star, which is Saturn, the white star, which is Venus, and the morning star, which is Mercury) do not follow their usual paths, but instead sometimes deviate to the east and sometimes to the west. If all five planets behave this way, there will certainly be bandits emerging. If the five planets move toward the 'Celestial Gate'—a star official symbolizing the heavenly gate—there will be military conflict within the year. If all five planets move retrograde, that is, they no longer move from west to east as usual, but instead move westward, this is a sign that the ruler will overstep the law and ministers will plot against the ruler. The above is still a continuation of the previous divination. The Shi school says: if the five planets move within the twenty-eight mansions and approach within seven inches, or directly overlap a mansion star, the king of the region corresponding to that mansion will die. If the five planets stop within the twenty-eight mansions, the king will be executed and the country will be destroyed. If the five planets invade and congregate at the center of a particular mansion star, the person who will be punished will be in the capital city; if the deviation is to the south, it refers to a man; to the north, a woman; to the east, a young person; and to the west, an old person. If the five planets move retrograde and although they are not within seven inches of a mansion star, they remain stationed there without moving, the king of that region will be executed and killed. If they move normally but stop below a mansion star, the king will die of illness.
Xi Meng said: The five planets appear at the same time and all move retrograde, and this will not take more than the same year; the whole country will send out five generals, and the appointed time will be within fifty days. Wu Xian said: The five planets are revealed under the mandate of heaven and are used to inspect the unrighteous state; they change their original colors and move retrograde, violating the degrees of the twenty-eight constellations and the stars in the Central Palace. The term 'stay' refers to remaining in one place for a long time without moving; if they stay for more than twenty days, it indicates the death of a minister; if they stay for more than sixty days, it indicates the death of the sovereign. At this time, a comet-like evil star appears (the original text is missing one character, only a symbol remains). Whenever they sweep across, there will be chaos below. Therefore, when the world becomes confused, the heavenly phenomena change accordingly; when the lower parts encroach upon the upper, the five planets appear to move retrograde. If the five planets move retrograde and stay in a certain constellation, and if they have already left but then return, lingering in that area forming a curved shape, sometimes large and sometimes small, sometimes bright and sometimes dim, this is called 'cutting off the record', meaning the heavenly order is broken, and the resulting calamity is especially severe.
The Sea Divination says: The five planets should not pass through certain star mansions but instead go directly through them, abandoning the orderly sequence of the star mansions; in this case, the nobleman of the country corresponding to the affected mansion will be involved in legal troubles. If a planet stops directly in a particular mansion without passing through, the country will suffer calamity. Whether the outcome is auspicious or inauspicious should be judged by the five colors displayed by the five planets at that time: yellow signifies joy, red signifies military conflict, white signifies mourning, blue signifies worry, and black signifies flood. Dong Zhongshu said: The five planets deviate from their normal paths because the officials in power are not suitable people, and the virtuous and the unworthy are placed together and advance together; when the ministers cause chaos on earth, the stars err in the sky. The remedy is to promote the virtuous and dismiss the unworthy, using this method to save the country from peril.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the five planets moveretrograde, change color, and appear or disappear at times not in accordance with the usual, the ruler should change customs and reform laws and decrees. He should rebuild destroyed ancestral temples, establish heirs for families without descendants, provide relief to the poor, care for orphans and widows, lighten punishments, reward those who have merited, recommend virtuous scholars, and treat the virtuous with propriety. In all matters, he should follow the ways of Heaven. In each of the four seasons, he should distribute stored wealth, empty the treasuries, and reduce taxes. In this way, the abnormal phenomena of the sun, moon, and five planets, as well as omens such as comets, rainbows, and shooting stars, will not bring calamity. Xi Meng says: When the five planets appearretrograde or change color, if they do not conform to the usual, they should be reported to the sovereign. Then, each matter should be properly handled according to its appropriate affairs.
