Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

The Shi school says: The star of the wild chicken is a single star located in the military market. The original commentary notes its coordinates: entering the Well mansion at the eighth degree, at a distance of 111 degrees from the northern celestial pole, and 42 degrees and three quarters outside the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star of the wild chicken symbolizes a great general, governing the establishment of camps and the orders of the army, as well as the readiness for emergencies; if this star is bright and large, it indicates that the general is brave and the soldiers are strong; if this star is dim, it indicates that the general is timid and the soldiers are scattered. The Shi school says: When the star of the wild chicken is stable and motionless, it is auspicious; when it produces a芒角 (a芒 and 角, meaning a芒 and a horn), it is ominous. The Jingzhou Divination says: The star of the wild chicken is a general in the wild, governing military affairs. Another divination says: When the star of the wild chicken moves out of the military market, it indicates that there will be war throughout the land, and the feudal lords will attack each other. The Shi school's praise says: The star of the wild chicken governs the independent states. Since the star of the wild chicken is located in the military market, the above divination statements are mostly related to military campaigns, garrisons, and the supply of provisions.

The Wolf Star indicates twenty-seven.

The Shi school says: The wolf star has only one star, located in the southeast of the Three Stars mansion. The original commentary notes its coordinates: entering the Well mansion at thirteen degrees, a distance of one hundred and six and three quarters degrees from the northern celestial pole, and forty-two and a quarter degrees outside the Yellow Path. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: The wolf star is also called "Yi Jiang"; when this star is yellow or white in color, without any light or movement, it indicates peace throughout the world and no military conflicts; but when this star is red in color and large in appearance, with bright rays and fluctuating colors, it indicates chaos in the world, great military campaigns, bandits appearing on the roads, the ruler unable to rest, and the people suffering hardship. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: The wolf star corresponds to the state of Qin and the southern夷 people; it is also called "Hou," "Tian Ji," and "Tian Ling." The wolf represents the image of thieves and bandits, while the arc represents the heavenly bow, used to guard against thieves and bandits. Therefore, when the arc star shoots at the wolf star, and the arrow is straight, the wolf star will not move, thus there will be no bandits and no military conflicts; but if the wolf star moves, shines brightly, is large in size, has many rays, and changes color, losing its normal state, it indicates that the Hu people will launch a large-scale military campaign for attack.

The "Jilì Shū" says: The Wolf Star represents a general in the wild. Song Jun says: The Wolf Star symbolizes sheep horns. The original book's marginal note cites Zheng Xuan saying: The Wolf Star governs sheep, because the Wolf Star is associated with the Earthly Branch "Wei," which in the twelve zodiac animals corresponds to the sheep. Wu Xian says: When the Wolf Star is bright, the price of weapons such as bows and arrows rises; when the star is small, the price of such weapons falls; it belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases. The "Huangdi Zhàn" says the same: When the Wolf Star is bright, the price of weapons such as bows and arrows rises; when the star is small, the price of such weapons falls. The "Chunqiu Yuanming Bao" says: When the Wolf Star changes color, bandits will arise. The Shi school says: When the Wolf Star is red and bright, with long and large芒角, it indicates war will break out, a general will die, and this will happen within two years. Wu Xian says: When the Wolf Star moves from its proper position and loses its normal appearance, it indicates famine across the land, soldiers filling the fields, and the country will suffer disaster, and this will happen within a year. Xi Meng says: When the Wolf Star produces white芒角, it indicates a large number of people will gather and rebel. Another divination says: When the Wolf Star is restless and moves about, the ruler cannot rest quietly, will not stay in the palace, but will ride out across the land. The "Jingzhou Zhàn" says: When the Wolf Star has many芒角, there will be many bandits; when it has few芒角, there will be few bandits. The "Jingzhou Zhàn" also says: When the Wolf Star loses its normal appearance, people will eat each other. The "Shi Zhuan" says: When the Wolf Star is in the southeast of the Three Stars mansion, it has its regular course; once itspointed rays changes, it is a sign of military troubles.

The appearance of the arc star indicates the twenty-eight constellations.

The Shi school says: The arc star consists of nine stars, located to the southeast of the wolf star. The original commentary notes its coordinates: the westernmost star is at the sixteenth degree of the Well mansion, one hundred twenty-two degrees and a quarter from the north celestial pole, and fifty-two and a half degrees outside the Yellow Path. The Shi school says: the arc star is the heavenly bow, used to guard against thieves and bandits; the wolf star is a cunning bandit, and the arc star oversees its unlawful actions. The arrows on the arc should always be straight, so that the wolf star dares not act recklessly, and the world remains peaceful without war; if the arrows are not straight, the arc bow cannot be drawn, which indicates many thieves and bandits, great warfare, and the country's unrest. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: the arc star governs the storehouse of bows and arrows, used to guard against extraordinary events; if this star is large and uniformly bright with a yellowish luster, it indicates peace in all directions and no warfare in the world; if its light changes and deviates from its normal state, it indicates warfare everywhere, high prices for bows and arrows, and the ruler's unrest.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: The arc star governs military officials; when the arc bow is drawn, the side that is about to fight will not win; when the arc star moves, the side that initiates the attack will be auspicious, while the side that delays will be inauspicious. The *Yellow Emperor's Divination* says: The seven stars of the wolf flag are bent and not straight, indicating the weakness of the barbarians, and thus an attack is feasible. The *Luo Writing* says: When the wolf star and the arc star are both drawn, calamity will spread to the northern barbarians. The *Shangshu Wei* says: When the black emperor, who rules the water virtue, is about to decline, the wolf star and the arc star will be drawn. The *Chunqiu Wei* says: When the wolf and arc stars are drawn, four years later, the world will be plunged into prolonged disorder. The *Jiao Yanshou Transmission* says: When the heavenly bow is drawn, it signifies warfare everywhere, with the sovereign and ministers scheming against each other. Xi Meng says: If there is military action, and the arc star is drawn, the side that attacks first will be advantageous, while the side that attacks later will be disadvantageous. The *Jingzhou Divination* also says: When the arc star appears dark blue, it indicates major calamity. The *Jingzhou Divination* further says: When the arc star moves, if it is bright, large, with manypointed rays, and its color changes abnormally, it signifies numerous bandits and the barbarians raising armies. The *Shi School Commentary* says: When the arc star is in the southeast, it signifies a plot being laid. The nine stars of the arc are located southeast of the wolf star, forming the shape of a bow with an arrow drawn, the arrowhead pointing directly at the wolf star, so generations of diviners have always considered the arc and wolf stars together.

The star of the old man is observed at twenty-nine.

The Shi school says: the star of longevity is located to the south of the arc star. The original book's marginal note records its coordinates: entering the Well mansion at nineteen degrees, at a distance of one hundred thirty-three and a half degrees from the northern celestial pole, and seventy-five degrees and three quarters outside the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: the star of longevity is also called the star of longevity; when it appears yellow, bright, and large, it indicates longevity, health of the elderly, and peace throughout the land; if the star is small or does not appear, it indicates the ruler's illness, the elderly's weakness, and the outbreak of military conflicts. Xi Meng says: the star of longevity is the southern pole star. Twenty-five days after the beginning of autumn, it appears in the morning between the directions of Bing and Wu. The original book's marginal note says: it appears in the south at the autumn equinox and disappears at the spring equinox, rising from the Bing position and setting at the Ding position. Wu Xian says: the star of longevity belongs to the Wood official in the Five Phases. The Spring and Autumn Fan Meng Bao says: directly facing the arc star and close to the horizon, there is a bright star called the southern pole star; when it appears, it indicates peace throughout the land; when it does not appear, it indicates the outbreak of military conflicts; usually, people observe it at the southern suburbs at the autumn equinox, using it to celebrate the ruler's achievements and issue commands to the whole country.

The Spring and Autumn Waijue says: When the star of the old man appears, it indicates political peace and the longevity of the ruler; when it disappears, it signifies the ruler's peril or the short life of people. The Spring and Autumn Wenyaogou says: When the king is tranquil and untroubled, the star of the old man appears. The Spring and Autumn YunDoushu says: When the ruler's affairs are peaceful, the star of the old man shines over the country, and the people live long. The Shi school says: When the star of the old man is bright, it indicates a flourishing lifespan and many virtuous men in the world. Another divination says: The color of the star of the old man should be yellow and lustrous, which brings good fortune to the ruler and the elderly; if it is green, there will be calamity, and the elderly will be ill; if it is black or white, the ruler will have affairs, and many elders will die. In general, one should judge good or bad fortune according to the five colors: green, red, yellow, white, and black. The Sunshi Ruiyingshu says: When the king follows the will of heaven, the star of the old man shines over the country.

The Star of Jisi (Jisi Star) Divination consists of thirty sections.

The Shi school says: The Ji star has five stars, located south of the Seven Stars mansion. The original book's marginal note records its coordinates: the westernmost star is in the fourteenth degree and a quarter of the Willow mansion, at a distance of one hundred forty-eight degrees from the northern celestial pole, and sixty-eight degrees and a quarter outside the Yellow Path. Zu Geng says: The upper Ji star is the head of the agricultural officials; "Ji" refers to the grain called Ji, which is considered the first among all grains, and is used as the name for the official in charge. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: The Ji star governs the abundance or scarcity of the five grains; when this star is warm, bright, and luminous, that year will have a great harvest, and all five grains will be ripe; when this star is dim or even disappears, that year will have a poor harvest, leading to famine across the land, with people leaving their homes. The Shi school says: When the Ji star is not visible, that year will experience famine. The "Shi School's Commentary" says: The Ji star is located south of the Extended Net mansion, and it timely reports the agricultural achievements.

The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Sixty-Nine

The Gan school's official divination on the five elements.

Heavenly Emperor governs one.

The Gan school says: The Heavenly Emperor has only one star, located within the enclosure of Gou Chen. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" states: The Heavenly Emperor is named "Yao Po Bao," governing the image of celestial female officials, and issuing the mandate of heaven to the world below. The "Yellow River Chart and Luo Writing" say: The Heavenly Emperor bestows this mandate upon the Son of Heaven, using it to establish the five rites. The "Spring and Autumn Weave" says: The Great Emperor resides in the Purple Palace, remaining silent and unmoving, only distributing vital energies through the movement of the Big Dipper, allowing the five celestial emperors to clarify their own titles. The "Spring and Autumn Yuan Ming Bao" says: When the imperial position is clear and unobstructed, with splendid and refined wings, the starlight becomes grand, its color and position harmonious, signifying peace throughout the world, and the state's name is established in the center. The original commentary cites Song Jun, saying: The term "Emperor" refers to the vital energy of the Great Emperor; the term "Emperor" refers to the star body of the Great Emperor. The "Gan School's Commentary" says: The Heavenly Emperor holds the records of all deities.

Four Auxiliary Stars indicate two.

The Gan school says: Four assistants and four stars encircle the central star around the north celestial pole. Xi Meng says: When the four assistant stars depart from their positions, it indicates that there is a loss of propriety between the sovereign and ministers, and there will be someone among the ministers who will be executed. The "Gan School Commentary" says: The four assistant stars hold the key to power, located at the northern celestial axis.

The Huagai star is said to occupy three positions.

The Gan school says: The Huagai consists of seven stars, and the handle of the cover, called "gang," consists of nine stars, totaling sixteen stars, located above the Heavenly Emperor. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: The stars that support the Huagai directly above are called gang stars; the large star adjacent to the Huagai is the mother star; the central one is the body star; the star two inches below the mother star is the wife star; if these stars change, each will bring corresponding calamities. If a small star appears where it should not appear two inches below the mother star, once seen, it indicates sudden change, the crown prince will not be able to inherit the throne, and there will be someone of a different surname who wants to take power for himself. The occurrence will be near in one year, medium in two years, and distant in three years. At that time, the world will be troubled and chaotic, grain prices will soar, and fields and houses will be so cheap they have no price. The "Gan school praise" says: The Huagai spreads its light, covering the Heavenly Emperor's boat; dark beams surround the gang handle, striking and establishing it, supporting it firmly without tilting.

Divination of the Five Emperors' inner seats: four

The Gan school says: The five inner seats consist of five stars, located beneath the Huagai star. They represent the five directional heavenly emperors - east, south, west, north, and center - seated within the Purple Micro Palace. The "Gan School Commentary" states: The duty of the inner seats is to arrange the seating positions for the heavenly emperors.

Six Jia Stars Divination for the Five Elements

The Gan school says: The six Jia stars are located beside the Huagai's cover bar. The "Spring and Autumn Wei" says: The six Jia occupy the central position to serve as assistants, encompassing all kinds of things in the world, and are the gateways through which deities enter and exit. The original book's marginal note says: The six Jia are used to record the yang energy, and the movement of yang energy is used to determine the seasons, so they are placed beside the cover bar, thereby issuing decrees and setting the time for the people. The "Gan School Eulogy" says: The six Jia reside in the center to observe the seasonal changes, and their coming and going and advancing and retreating all have their respective waiting periods.

The Tian Zhu star governs six.

The Gan school says: The Tian Zhu stars are five in number, located within the Purple Micro Palace, close to the eastern藩yuan. The "Gan Zan" states: Tian Zhu establishes government and education, and on the first day of each month and the fifteenth day, documents are hung on the pillars. The original book's marginal note says: Tian Zhu is a place for establishing government and education, and hanging records and laws. Usually, on the new moon and full moon days, prohibitions are posted on the pillars to inform all officials.

The column under the historian's staff divines seven.

The Gan school says: The official known as Zhu Xia Shi is a single star located in the Northeast of the North Pole. The "Gan Shi Zan" says: Zhu Xia Shi records the mistakes of the sovereign and then secretly transfers the records to the East Kitchen for storage. The original commentary notes: Here, the term "chu" refers to a repository for storing books.

The female historian's star divination of eight.

The Gan school says: The female historian is a single star located to the north of the column below. The original book's marginal note says: The female historian is a low-ranking woman in the palace, responsible for reporting the time according to the water clock. The "Gan School Commentary" says: The female historian reports the time according to the water clock and records the time as it passes.

The Book of Documents: Star Divination Nine

The Gan school says: The Five Ministers are five stars located in the southeast corner of the gate of the Purple Micro Palace. The "Gan School Commentary" says: The Five Ministers serve the sovereign by conveying the words of ministers, consulting and planning for state affairs day and night, and drafting official documents.

Yin Virtue Divination consists of ten elements.

The Gan school says: Yin Virtue consists of two stars located west of the Book of Documents. The "Spring and Autumn Wen Yao Gou" says: In front of the Purple Micro Palace, three stars are aligned facing the斗mouth. As they gradually become sharper towards the north, they appear and disappear, which is called Yin Virtue, representing the vigorous energy of Tian Yi. The original commentary notes: Both the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials Book" and the "Book of Han: Astronomical Records" refer to these three stars as Tian Yi, but according to the "Tu Bo Zhi," there are only two stars. The "Chun Qiu Yun Dou Chou" says: Yin Virtue governs the rectification of the way. The "Chun Qiu Wei" says: Yin Virtue establishes achievements, and it presides over conflicts and warfare between ministers and the sovereign, as well as mutual scheming. The "Yun Dou Chou" also says: When Yin Virtue stars become prominent, it indicates that ministers act recklessly, many powerful men plot rebellion, the Son of Heaven is constrained, and the sovereign and ministers are suspicious of each other. The original commentary cites Song Jun's explanation: "Floating" means appearing, and Yin Virtue stars are usually faint, but now they become visible. Jiao Yanshou says: When Yin Virtue stars are bright, it indicates that the crown prince will attack the sovereign, or a female ruler will rule the country. The "He Lian Tu" says: When Yin Virtue stars disappear, a sage will emerge to restore order. The "Gan School Commentary" says: Yin Virtue specializes in benevolence, helping the people, providing relief, and offering care.

Heavenly Bed Divination: 11th position

The Gan school says: The Tianchuang consists of six stars, located outside the gate of the Purple Micro Palace. The "Gan Zan" states: Tianchuang is a dwelling place for resting and sleeping (note in the original text: some editions read 'dormitory'), where the Heavenly Emperor undresses and rests, or leisurely resides and takes his ease.

The Heavenly Star of Heaven's Principle governs the twelve earthly branches.

The Gan school says: The four stars of Tian Li are located within the opening of the Big Dipper's handle; the opening of the handle is the gap formed by the four stars surrounding the handle. The "Yue Wei" says: Tian Li is the prison that holds the nobleman. The "Chun Qiu He Cheng Tu" says: Tian Li oversees the examination of the Three Dukes. Wu Xian says: The Tian Li within the Big Dipper's handle oversees the punishment of the nobleman, and it belongs to the Water official in the Five Phases. The "Xiao Jing Yuan Shen Qi" says: Tian Li maintains order and clarity, investigating the true intentions within people's hearts. The "Gan Shi Zan" says: Tian Li oversees justice; whenever a nobleman commits a crime, he is first judged within the Big Dipper's handle.

Internal Kitchen Star Divination: thirteen items

The Gan school says: The two stars of Inner Kitchen are located outside the southwest corner of the Purple Micro Palace but within the scope of the great palace, representing the kitchen for providing food and drink. The "Gan School Commentary" says: The Inner Kitchen prepares lavish banquets, with singing and laughter in the hall, entertaining guests and hosts.

Inner Staircase Star Divination: Fourteen

The Gan school says: There are six stars in the Inner Stairs, located to the north of the Star of Examinations and Documents. The Inner Stairs are symbolic of the steps within the palace for ascending and descending. The "Spring and Autumn Concordance Diagram" states: The Inner Stairs star governs matters concerning the Bright Hall. The original book's marginal note cites Song Jun, saying: The stars referred to here are the Inner Stairs. The "Gan School Eulogy" says: The Inner Stairs lead to the vermilion gate, being a place for displaying favor, understanding the people's sentiments, and considering things thoroughly.

The Star of Livelihood is associated with fifteen.

The Gan school says: The six stars of the Star of Livelihood are located outside the northeast corner of the Palace of the Emperor. They are the place where the Emperor's food comes from. The "Gan School Commentary" says: The Star of Livelihood prepares various delicacies, including vegetables and other food offerings presented by officials and ministers.

Divination by the Sixteen Stars of the Planets

The Gan school says: The star called Ce is the first star, located in front of Wang Liang. Wu Xian says: The Ce star governs the emperor's military forces, and belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases. The original book's marginal note cites Yu Zhang's "Loyal Martyrs' Biography" which says: Zhou Shuda, a native of Nanchang, held the position of Attendant Counselor. During the Han Huan Di's time, he was to go to the southern temple for a sacrifice to heaven. According to the ritual instructions, the imperial carriage should depart at daybreak. After observing the heavenly phenomena, Zhou Shuda said: The Ce star governs the imperial carriage. If the imperial carriage is to travel, it must be driven by horses.
