"Yinghuo" refers to the planet Mars. Among the five luminaries, it appears red like fire and moves erratically, causing confusion, hence its name. It presages warfare, loss of life, and chaos. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says that Yinghuo is also called "Chixing" (Red Star). The "Guangya · Xishitian" says that it is also called "Faxing" (Punishment Star), and some call it "Fazhang" (Law Enforcer). The "Jingzhou Divination" states that when Yinghuo is in the east, it is called "Xuanshi"; when in the west, it is called "Tianli"; and when in the south, it is called "Yinghuo." It moves without a fixed path, specifically observing unrighteous states. Wu Gong's "Tian Guan Shu" says that Yinghuo is formed from the essence of fire, located in the south, and is the son of the Red Emperor, symbolizing the feudal lords. It serves as heaven's scout, overseeing the abundance or scarcity of harvests, and monitoring strange omens and calamities. It roams freely in all directions; when it appears, there will be warfare, and when it disappears, warfare ceases. If it circles and remains stationary, there will be calamities involving death and loss.
The Shijing Wei · Han Shen Wu says: The planet Mars governs whether names and realities correspond. The Ch'unqiu Wei says: The planet Mars governs surveillance and watchfulness. The vital energies respond and like things attract each other, so the planet Mars appears to moveretrograde, displaying various strange phenomena. The Shi school says: The planet Mars governs calamity, governs the southern celestial meridian, governs days of the fire element, governs the heavenly stems Jia and Yi, and governs rites. When rites are destroyed, heavenly punishment manifests as the planet Mars movingretrograde, which is a sign of improper governance in the summer season. One should determine which country is affected by observing the star mansion corresponding to the planet Mars' position.

The Shi school says: The planet Mars represents the rites of the Son of Heaven, moving east, west, south, and north without fixed course, hiding for five months before appearing again. The Shi school also says: Mars governs the Grand Master of Ceremonies, who oversees diplomatic affairs and matters of death and mourning. Wu Xian says: Mars is the male partner of the white star, the leader among the five planets, its color is red, and its power surpasses that of the white star. Wu Xian also says: Mars presides over calamity, and all human errors, crimes, disasters, and blessings are determined by it.
The *Hóngfàn Wǔxíng Zhuàn* says that the planet Mars (Fenghuo) corresponds to "ritual propriety" (li) among the five constants (wuchang), used to distinguish between superiors and inferiors and regulate conduct. In the five aspects of appearance, speech, gaze, hearing, and thought, it corresponds to "gaze," governing the clarity of vision and the discernment of good and evil. When the system of ritual propriety is undermined, vision is impaired, and the summer season is violated, Mars will manifest as drought, famine, disease, disorder, death and mourning, banditry, and strange omens. Ban Gu's *Tianwen Zhi* states that violating the summer season harms the fire element, and heaven's punishment is thus revealed through Mars.
The "Astronomy" section of the "Huainanzi Honglie" says: The south belongs to fire, its heavenly emperor is Zhurong, its assistant is Zhu Ming, who holds the balance and governs summer; the balance represents fairness and justice, its deity is Yinghuo, its animal is the Vermilion Bird, its sound is the fifth tone, Zheng, and its day is Bing and Ding. It also says: Yinghuo appears and disappears without a fixed pattern, so we must carefully observe its changes; its color sometimes appears and sometimes disappears. Ban Gu's "Astronomy Chronicle" says: Yinghuo represents the governance of the Son of Heaven; thus, even if there is a sage on the throne, one must observe the position of Yinghuo. Xi Meng says: Yinghuo governs the military affairs of the Minister of War.
The "Jingzhou Divination" says: The planet Mars is the spirit of fire, and when its spirit ascends to heaven, it becomes the planet Mars, corresponding to the region of Jingchu. It also says: It governs the area south of Wu and Yue. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: Mars is the scout of the celestial one, in charge of the transformation of all things. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: Mars receives its mandate from the celestial one above, and below it oversees the examination of the faults of the ministers of the state, managing arrogance, extravagance, calamity, bandits, hunger, famine, death, mourning, uprightness, integrity, warfare, disorder, and confusion; all calamities are under its jurisdiction. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the king practices propriety and righteousness, Mars will not remain in his territory; when the state suffers misfortune, Mars will come to punish it.
Han Yang said: The term "Yinghuo" refers to a star that is luminous and confusing, symbolizing a cunning villain who spreads slander and causes harm. It is unpredictable and cannot be relied upon as a standard. Han Yang also said: Yinghuo is a star belonging to the fire element among the Five Phases. It governs governance and the feudal lords. Han Yang also said: Yinghuo serves as the scout of the heavenly deity Tianyi. If it appears to conflict, moveretrograde, or remain for a long time, and if thunder is silent, it indicates that ministers may seize control of the state, disrupt the regular order of the five stars, gather in groups to commit regicide, and cause calamity and punishment. When Yinghuo appears from the west and movesretrograde, a wise ruler will find it difficult to remain secure (the original text has some missing or corrupted words, making the meaning incomplete). When Yinghuo is mandated to rise, the world is at peace; but when it changes color or behaves improperly, the region it stays in will suffer ruin, and the region it confronts will experience warfare. Han Yang also said: Yinghuo governs the refinement of rituals. If rituals are orderly, Yinghuo is pleased; if rituals are disorderly, Yinghuo is angered.
The Shi school says: The planet Mars is impetuous and quick in its movement, governing the south, and its position ranges from Si to Wei, which are the areas under the jurisdiction of the southern summer climate. At this time, the vigorous yang is above and the slight yin is below, which corresponds to the order of hierarchy and the nurturing of all things. This means that if the policies of summer are improper and the granting of rewards and punishments go against the way of heaven, the planet Mars will show anomalies. Han Yang says: When the planet Mars enters a particular star mansion, the country corresponding to that mansion will suffer calamity. Han Yang also says: Where the planet Mars stops moving, the king of that country will die. The Sea of Divination says: The planet Mars follows the duties of an envoy, moving without a fixed course.
